  • Most turbo machines, which operate at high speeds, such as gas turbines, jet engines, pumps, and compressors are prone to perrturbing vibrations. The best vibration control method for rotors is to eliminate destabilizing factors. Careful balancing application of "more stable" oil-lubricated bearing, such as tilting pad bearings or use of anti-swirl devices in seals, are examplse of passive vibration control methods. the use of magnetic bearing is an active control method. An obvious advantage of active control is that it provides damping (or modifies system stiffness or other parameters) only when there is a need for that, i.e., in emergency states, while not affecting the rotor normal operational conditions. Moreover, active control methods provide exact position control through on-line control. In this study, a magnetic actuator, digital contrliier using DSP, and bipolar operational power supply/amplifiers were developed to show the effectiveness of reducing robot vibration. Also the curve fitting procedure to obtain the transfer function of frequency dependent component was developed. Results presented in this dissertation will provide a well-defined technical parameters in designing magnetic damper system.er system.

  • In this paper, a new definition of short-circuit ratio concept for multi-converter HVDC systems is proposed. Analysis results of voltage interaction between converters show that the reactive power-voltage characteristic of a converter has a dominant effect on voltage interaction level compared with its active power-voltage characteristic. Such a relation between converter reactive power and voltage interaction level supports taking the former into account in the definition of short-circuit ratio concept for multi-converter systems. The proposed definition is verified by the method of maximum power curve for various system configurations. Furthermore, a formula to calculate transient overvoltage for multi-converter systems is derived based on the proposed definition, and the efficiency of the derived formula is verified.

  • This study is to analyze the nonlinear characteristics of magnetic flux distribution of a transformer by Finite Element Method using 2-dimensional elements. To accomplish this, first a single phase shell-type transformer is selected a model to be analyzed, and the element equation is derived by the vriational approach. And then using the numerical approximation of a magnetization curve and the Direct Convergence Method which is presented in this study, the magnetic nonlinear characteristic is analyzed. In this consequence, the resultant values are converged within 10 iterations of calculation. And in the comparison with the case of linear analysis, these results are more accurate and reasonable.

  • During magnetic inrush or over-excitation, saturation of the core in a transformer draws a large exciting current, which can cause mal-operation of a differential relay. This paper proposes a modified current differential relay for transformer protection. The relay calculates core-loss current from the induced voltage and the core-loss resistance; the relay calculates the magnetizing current from the core flux and the magnetization curve. Finally, the relay obtains the modified differential current by subtracting the core-loss and the magnetizing currents from the conventional differential current. Comparison study with the conventional differential relay with harmonic blocking is also shown. The proposed technique not only discriminates magnetic inrush and over-excitation from an internal fault, but also improves the speed of the conventional relay.

  • Magnetization losses of a Bi-2223 tape in magnetic fields parallel to the tape surface were measured by a room temperature cancellation and a cryogenic temperature cancellation. The results indicate that the same loss data are observed for both methods. The magnetization losses are hysteretic because the measured losses agree well with calculated ones based on a critical state model. In the full field penetration cases the magnetization losses increase with the frequency but in the partial field penetration cases the influence of the frequency is opposite.

  • A five path ultrasonic and/or magnetic flowmeter were installed after valve. Five path ultrasonic flowmeter were tested to obtain it's performance in a water flow standard system and magnetic flowmeter. It's varied with straight pipe length(nD), install direction and valve position. All the results are summerized. The multi-path flowmeters(MUF) showed up to $\pm0.5{\%}$ at a 2, 4, 8, 15D spacing : the MUF was significantly better than magnetic flowmeter at disturbed flow conditions.

  • This paper concerns on application of active magnetic bearing(AMB) system to levitate the elevation axis of an electro-optical sight mounted on moving vehicles. In such a system, it is desirable to retain the elevation axis within the predetermined air-gap while the vehicle is moving. An optimal base acceleration feedforward control is proposed to reduce the base motion response. In the consideration of the uncertainty of the system model, a filtered-x least-mean-square(FXLMS) algorithm is used to estimate the frequency response function of the feedforward control which cancels base motions. The frequency response function is fitted to an optimal feedforward control. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed control reduces the air-gap deviation to 27.7% that by feedback control alone.

  • The basic magnetic properties are reported for Eocene andesite and granitic andesite collected from the King Sejong Station and Marsh Runway at King George Island, South Shetland Islands Antarctic Peninsula. Samples A (andesite), B (granitic andesite) and D (granitic andesite) carry stable component of natural remanent magnetization (NRM), but sample C (andesite) unstable URM. These NRM stabilities are consistent with the domain structures estimated by the ratios of $J_R/J_s\;and\;H_{RC}/H_C$ values. On the basis of their Curie temperature, we infer magnetite as the main magnetic carrier for samples A B and C and titanomagnetite for sample D. Our study reveals that samples A and B are suitable for paleomagnetic investigations, whereas sample D is not.

  • $0.36[wtx]Sio_2$ and $0.1[wtx]H_3BO_3$ were added to strontium ferrite magnets of the magnetoplumbite phase SrO $5.7Fe_2O_3$. This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of particle size distribution as a function of milling time(20,30,40,50,60,70 hours) on the magnetic properties of SrO $5.7Fe_2O_3$ ferrite magnet. The B-H Curve, density and the degree of orientation were measured. The optimal conditions of making magnets and properties of a typical sample are the following : The milling time was 60 hours. Magnetic and physical properties are $B_r$=4000[G], $_BH_c$=3330[Oe], $_IH_c$=3525[Oe], (BH)max=3.786 [MGOe], density= $5.0063g/cm^2$, orientation factor f=0.813.

  • Dust has recently been found to be prevalent in compact binaries such as non-magnetic Cataclysmic Variable systems. As a possible source of this dust is from solid bodies, we explore impacts to non-magnetic Cataclysmic Variable disks. We use three-dimensional Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic simulations to search for impact signatures. From injections of whole bodies to these disks, we find pulse shapes in simulated bolometric light curves that resemble impact flashes in the light curves of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 event. As a result, we tentatively identify these light curve shapes as signatures of impacts.
