This paper describes the micro cutting of wear resistant tungsten carbides using PCD (Poly-Crystalline Diamond) cutting tools in performance with SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) direct observation method. Turning experiments were also carried out on this alloy (V50) using a PCD cutting tool. One of the purposes of this study is to describe clearly the cutting mechanism of tungsten carbides and the behavior of WC particles in the deformation zone in orthogonal micro cutting. Other purposes are to achieve a systematic understanding of machining characteristics and the effects of machining parameters on cutting force, machined surface and tool wear rates by the outer turning of this alloy carried out using the PCD cutting tool during these various cutting conditions. A summary of the results are as follows: (1) From the SEM direct observation in cutting the tungsten carbide, WC particles are broken and come into contact with the tool edge directly. This causes tool wear in which portions scrape the tool in a strong manner. (2) There are two chip formation types. One is where the shear angle is comparatively small and the crack of the shear plane becomes wide. The other is a type where the shear angle is above 45 degrees and the crack of the shear plane does not widen. These differences are caused by the stress condition which gives rise to the friction at the shear plane. (3) The thrust cutting forces tend to increase more rapidly than the principal forces, as the depth of cut and the cutting speed are increased preferably in the orthogonal micro cutting. (4) The tool wear on the flank face was larger than that on the rake face in the orthogonal micro cutting. (5) Three components of cutting force in the conventional turning experiments were different in balance from ordinary cutting such as the cutting of steel or cast iron. Those expressed a large value of thrust force, principal force, and feed force. (6) From the viewpoint of high efficient cutting found within this research, a proper cutting speed was 15 m/min and a proper feed rate was 0.1 mm/rev. In this case, it was found that the tool life of a PCD tool was limited to a distance of approximately 230 m. (7) When the depth of cut was 0.1 mm, there was no influence of the feed rate on the feed force. The feed force tended to decrease, as the cutting distance was long, because the tool was worn and the tool edge retreated. (8) The main tool wear of a PCD tool in this research was due to the flank wear within the maximum value of $V_{max}$ being about 260 $\mu\textrm{m}$.

A new 6 degrees-of-freedom micro stage, based on parallel mechanisms and actuated by using piezoelectric elements, has been developed for the application of micro positioning such as semiconductor manufacturing devices, high precision optical measurement systems, and high accurate machining. The micro stage structure consists of a base platform and an upper platform(stage). The base platform can effectively generates planar motion with yaw motion, while the stage can do vertical motion with roll and pitch motions with respect to the base platform. This separated structure has an advantage of less interference among actuators. The forward and inverse kinematics of the micro stage are discussed. Also, through linearization of kinematic equations about an operating point on the assumption that the configuration of the micro stage remains essentially constant throughout a workspace is performed. To maximize the workspace of the stage relative to fixed frame, an optimal design procedure of geometric parameter is shown. Hardware description and a prototype are presented. The prototype is about 150mm in height and its base platform is approximately 94mm in diameter. The workspace of the prototype is obtained by computer simulation. Kinematic calibration procedure of the micro stage and its results are presented.

High-pressured jetting is now widely used in the advanced cutting processes of polymers, metals, glass, ceramics and composite materials because of some advantages such as heatless and non-contacting cutting. Similarly to the focused laser beam machining, it is well known as a type of high-density energy processes. High-pressured jetting is going to be developed not only to minimize the cutting line width but also to achieve the short cutting time as soon as possible. However, the interaction behavior between a work piece and high-velocity abrasive particles during the high-pressured jet cutting makes the impact mechanism even more complicated. Conventional high-pressured jetting is still difficult to apply to precision cutting of micro-scaled thin work piece such as thin metal sheets, thin ceramic substrates, thin glass plates and TMM (Thin multi-layered materials). In this paper, we proposed the advanced high-pressured jetting technology by introducing a new abrasives supplying method and investigated the optimal process conditions of the cutting pressure, the cutting velocity and SOD (Standoff distance).
In OLED panel production process, it is necessary to cut a part of protective film as a preprocess for lighting inspection. The current method is to recognize only the fiducial mark of the cut-out panel. Bare Glass Cutting does not compensate for machining cumulative tolerances. Even though process defects still occur, it is necessary to develop technology to solve this problem because only the Align Mark of the panel that has already been cut is used as the reference point for alignment. There is a lot of defective lighting during panel lighting test because the correct protective film is not cut on the panel power and signal application pad position. In laser cutting process to remove the polarizing film / protective film / TSP film of OLED panel, laser processing is not performed immediately after the panel alignment based on the alignment mark only. Therefore, in this paper, we performed real time inspection which minimizes the mechanism tolerance by correcting the laser cutting path of the protective film in real time using Machine Vision. We have studied calibration algorithm of Vision Software coordinate system and real image coordinate system to minimize inspection resolution and position detection error and edge detection algorithm to accurately measure edge of panel.

Grinding process is executed in the final machining stage to meet the quality requirements. In generally the ground surface of workpiece is affected by dressing condition as well as grinding condition. In order to estimate the roughness of workpiece, the several roughness models have been researched. These models defined the specific parameters and considered the several parameters which affect to roughness as multiply relationship among them. However, the multiply relationship among parameters is not enough to show the complicated grinding mechanism. Therefore, the neural network algorithm is used in this paper to predict the ground roughness for the plunge grinding. The proposed structure is composed of the initial roughness as well as final roughness model. The input parameters of proposed neural network are referred with the existing roughness model's. The performance of the proposed model is verified through experiments.
Laser has been called a "Quantum Machine" because of its mechanism of generation since the development on July 7,1960.by T.H.Maiman. We can now use this machine as a tool for manufacturing in industries. At present, 45kW CO2 laser, 10kW Nd:YAG laser, 6kW LD pumped YAG laser and 4kW direct diode laser facilities are available for welding a heavy steel plate of 40mm in thickness and for cutting metals at high speed of 140m/min. Laser Materials Processing is no longer a scientific curiosity but a modern tool in industries. Lasers in manufacturing sector are currently used in welding, cutting, drilling, cladding, marking, cleaning, micro-machining and forming. Recently, high power laser diode, 10kW LD pumped YAG laser, 700W fiber laser and excimer laser have been developed in the industrialized countries. As a result of large numbers of research and developments, the modem laser materials processing has been realized and used in all kinds of industries now. In the present paper, metallurgical studies on laser materials processing such as porosity formation, hot cracking and the joint performances of steels and aluminum alloys and dissimilar joint are discussed after the introduction of laser facilities and laser applications in industries such as automotive industry, electronics industry, and steel making industry. The wave towards the use of laser materials processing and its penetration into many industries has started in many countries now. Especially, development of high power/quality diode laser will be accelerate the introduction of this magnificent tool, because of the high efficiency of about 50%, long life time and compact.
Aluminium titanate($Al_2TiO_5$) has extremely anisotropic thermal expansion properties in single crystals, and polycrystalline material spontaneously microcracks in the cooling step after sintering process. These fine intergranular cracks limit the strength of the material, but provide an effective mechanism for absorbing strain energy during thermal shock and preventing catastrophic crack propagation. Furthermore, since machinable BN-ceramics used as an insulating substrate in current micro-electronic industry are very expensive, the development of new low-cost machinable substrate ceramics are consistently required. Therefore, cheap $Al_2TiO_5$-machinable ceramics was studied for the replacement of BN ceramics. $Al_2O_3-Al_2TiO_5$ ceramic composite was fabricated via in-situ reaction sintering. $Al_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ powders were mixed with various mol-ratio and sintered at 1400 to $1600^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. Density, hardness and strength of sintered ceramics were systematically measured. Phase analysis and microstructures were observed by XRD and SEM, respectively. Machinability of each specimens was tested by micro-hole machining. The results of research showed that the $Al_2TiO_5$-composites could be used for low-cost machinable ceramics.

In the case of high-strength or low thermal conductivity material milling, tool breakage occurs easily because of the high friction temperature. Therefore, the effectiveness of the coolant supply is very important for proper tool cooling. As the manually adjustable joint mechanism nozzle is generally used for coolant supply, the cooling efficiency is very low. It also has a bad influence on the workspace environment because of coolant scattering. In this study, the milling characteristics of STS316L were investigated according to the coolant spray position based on the automatic adjustable system. Tool wear and surface roughness were measured according to the coolant spray position. Through these experiments, the effectiveness of the fabricated system was explained.

The material removal mechanism in machining is significantly affected by the cutting edge geometry. Its effect becomes even more substantial when the depth of cut is relatively small as compared to the characteristic length which represents the shape and size of the cutting edge. Conventionally, radius or focal length has been employed as the characteristic length with the assumption that the shape of cutting edge is round or parabolic. However, in reality, there could be various ways to determine the radius or focal length even for the same tool edge profile, depending on the region to be considered as cutting edge in the measured profile and the constraints to be set in constructing the best fitted circle or parabola. In this regard, the present study proposes various models to determine the characteristic length in terms of radius or focal length. Their physical compatibility are validated by carrying out 2D orthogonal cutting experiments using inserts with a wide range of characteristic length ($30{\sim}180\;{\mu}m$ in terms of radius) and then by investigating the correlation between the characteristic length and the cutting forces. Such validation is based on the common belief that the larger the characteristic length is, the blunter the cutting edge is and the higher the cutting forces are. Interestingly, the results showed that the correlation is higher for the radius or focal length obtained with a constraint that the center of best fitted circle or the focus of the best fitted parabola should be on the bisectional line of the wedge angle of tool.

A practical method to investigate the user interface of web based Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) on the internet environment is established. Because the industrial FMS controller requires a lot of gadget, such as switch, dial, button, etc., for actual work-site flexible operation sufficiently, the user interface of the controller is significantly complex. The support for operational convenience of FMS controller can increase productivity and efficiency of the user, operational personnel of FMS. While most FMS provide their application programming interface(API) and graphical user interface(GUI) with adequate mechanism itself when used in stand alone, there is increasing demand for FMS that can operate with the intuitional user interface find virtual reality(V/R) environment. This thesis considers the intuitional user interface of Web-based FMS first, and from this, goes a step further, improves as virtual reality environment of FMS on the internet environments by using the feature based modeling technique approach and cartoon rendering. The feature-based modeling technique approach is applied to FMS line which is consist of facilities such as machining center, CNC lathe, autonomous guided vehicle, rail guided vehicle, and various controllers. In this study, the FMS established the intuitional user interface is able to obtain not only the operational convenience but also the enough productivity and significant efficiency.
