  • Spline is a machine component using transmits rotating energy with grooves on internal of boss and external periphery of shaft. Internal spline is generally produced by machining process. However, to reduce manufacturing cost and save time, plastic deformation process such as backward extrusion is gradually adapted for spline production. In plastic deformation process, forming load, stress on tools and flow flaws should be taken into account to have sound products. For this purpose, kinematically admissible velocity fields for Upper Bound Method in backward extrusion of internal spline has been suggested, then forming load and relative pressure have been calculated. Internal spline forming experiments have been con-ucted under hydraulic press and the calculated forming load well predicts the load of experiment.

  • The objective of this work is to suggest a mastless pattern fabrication technique using the combination of machining by Nanoindenter(equation omitted) XP and HF wet etching. Sample line patterns were machined on a borosilicate surface by constant load scratch (CLS) of the Nanoindenter(equation omitted) XP with a Berkovich diamond tip, and they were etched in HF solution to investigate chemical characteristics of the machined borosilicate surface. All morphological data of scratch traces were scanned using atomic force microscope (AFM).

  • Air balancer is a conveyance cargo-handling machine, used in assembly and process lines of car and machining industries. This can lift up an object, the weight of which is from 5 to 200 kg, and moves it to a position. As industrial technologies evolve, it is required to move an object and fit it into a specified position with greater accuracy, rather than performing simple tasks such as lifting objects up and down as conventional ones do. There is also a demand to handle an object with one hand, rather than with two hands,. Through designs of manifold unit for an air balancer function, pilot regulator unit to keep pressure constant, hand unit for an accurate load perception function, and air balancer circuit, this study enables everybody to work it with ease and convenience. Experiments and comparisons were conducted for the performance evaluation of the circuit.

  • The demand of high speed machining is increasing because the high speed cutting providers high efficiency of process, short process time, improved metal removal capacity and better surface finish. Active magnetic bearings allow much high surface speed than conventional ball bearings and therefore greatly suitable for high speed cutting. The automatic control concept of magnetic bearing system provides ability of intelligent control of spindle system to increase accuracy and flexibility by means of adaptive vibration control. This paper describes a design and development of a milling spindle system which includes built-in motor with power 5.5㎾ and maximum speed 70,000rpm, HSK-32C tool holer and active magnetic bearing system. Magnetic actuators are designed for satisfying static load condition. The Performances of manufactured spindle system was examined for its static and dynamic stiffness, load capacity, and rotational accuracy. This spindle was run up to 70,000 rpm stably, which is 3.5 million DmN.

  • A new dynamic model for the cutting process inb the end milling process is developed. This model, which describes the dynamic response of the end mill, the chip load geometry including tool runout, the dependence of the cutting forces on the chip load, is used to predict the dynamic cutting force during the end milling process. In order to predict accurately cutting forces and tool vibration, the model which uses instantaneous specific cutting force, inclueds both regenerative effect and penetration effect, The model is verified through comparisons of model predicted cutting force with measured cutting force obtained from machining experiments.

  • A multi-channel mechanical test machine for HANARO was designed and fabricated based on the design criteria of the multi-channel mechanical test machine sustained at the working conditions of $<400{\square}$, 3 W/g of gamma heating rate, $5{\times}10^{20}\;n/cm^2$, neutron flux and maximum load of 200 MPa. The multi-channel mechanical test machine made of 304 stainless steel consisted of four modules. Two of them locate upper part of the machine and the others locate lower part with 90 degree rotation. Each module was evaluated by determine load-displacement curve of zirconium specimen. Thermal insulators were also made by electron spark-machining of pure aluminum which was prepared in a domestic company.

  • In a high precision vertical machining center, the estimation of cutting forces is important for many reasons such as prediction of chatter vibration, surface roughness and so on. The cutting forces are difficult to predict because they are very complex and time variant. In order to predict the cutting forces of end-milling processes for various cutting conditions, their mathematical model is important and the model is based on chip load, cutting geometry, and the relationship between cutting forces and chip loads. Specific cutting force coefficients of the model have been obtained as interpolation function types by averaging forces of cutting tests. In this paper the coefficients are obtained by neural network and the results of the conventional method and those of the proposed method are compared. The results show that the neural network method gives more correct values than the function type and that in the learning stage as the omitted number of experimental data increase the average errors increase as well.

  • A micro hole punching system was developed and micro holes of 100m in diameter were successfully made on brass sheets of loom in thickness. A micro punch made of tungsten carbide was designed to withstand the punch load, considering the buckling and the bending moment due to possible misalignment error. The punch was fabricated by the grinding process with diamond wheel. The die was designed considering the punch load and fabricated by micro electrodischarge machining process. In this system the stripper is designed to guide punch tip to minimize the possible misalignment. The punch was installed on a vertical stepper and the die was mounted on an X-Y translation unit. The precision motion controller controlled all motions of the micro hole punching system. In this study technical difficulties and solutions in the micro hole punching process were also discussed.

  • In order to increase productivity through unmanned machining in CNC milling process, in-process tool fracture detection is required. In this paper, a new algorithm for tool fracture detection using cutting load variations was developed. For this purpose, developed were tool condition vector which is dimensionless indicator of cutting load and tool fracture index (TFI) which represents magnitude of tool fracture. Through cutting force simulation, tool fracture index was shown to be independent of tool run-outs and cutting condition variations. Using tool fracture index, the ratio of the tool fracture to feed per tooth could be indentified.

  • MEMS structures generally have been fabricated using surface-machining method, but the interface failure between silicon substrate and evaporated thin film frequently takes place due to the residual stress inducing by the applied the various loads. And the very important physical property in the heated environment is the linear coefficient of thermal expansion. Therefore this paper studied the residual stress caused the thermal loads in the thin film and introduced the simple method to measure the trend of the residual stress by the indentation. Specimens were made of materials such as Al, Au and Cu and thermal load was applied repeatedly. The residual stress was measured by nano-indentation using AFM and FEA. The existence of the residual stress due to thermal load was verified by the experimental results. The indentation length of the thermal loaded specimens increased minimum 11.8% comparing with the virgin thin film caused by tensile residual stress. The finite element analysis results are similar to indentation test.
