  • This paper presents an useful technique for assessing the volumetric errors in multi-axis machine tools using the kinematic double ball bar. This system has been developed based on the volumetric error map which describes the 3 dimensional errors of machine tools. The developed system inputs the measured radial data of 3 different planes, respectively XY,YZ,ZX, analysing the volumetric errors such as positional. straightness, angle, and squareness errors, etc. The developed system has been tested in a practical machine tool, and showed high potential for the error assessment of multi-axis machine tools.

  • One of the major limitations of productivity and quality in metal cutting is the machining accuracy of machine tools. The machining accuracy is affected by geometric errors, thermally-induced errors, and the deterioration of the machine tools. Geometric and thermal errors of machine tools should be measured and compensated to manufacture high quality products. In metal cutting, the machining accuracy is more affected by thermal errors than by geometric errors. In this study, the compensation device and temperature-based algorithm have been implemented on the machining center in order to compensate thermal error of machine tools under the real-time. The thermal errors are predicted using the neural network and multi-regression modeling methods. In order to compensate thermal characteristics under several operating conditions, experiments performed with five gap sensors and manufactured compensation device on the horizontal machining center.

  • Thermal deformation of machine origin of machine tools due to internal and external heat sources has been the most important problem to fabricate products with higher accuracy and performance. In order to solve this problem, GMDH models were constructed to estimate thermal deformation of machine origin for a vertical machining ceneter through measurement of temperature data of specific points on the machine tool. These models are nonlinear equations with high-order polynomials and implemented in a multilayered perceptron type network structure. Input variables and orders are automatically selected by correlation and optimization procedure. Sensors with small influence are deleted automatically in this algorithm. It was shown that the points of temperature measurement can be reduced without sacrificing the estimation accuracy of $\pm$5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. From the experimental result, it was confirmed that GMDH methodology was superior to least square models to estimate the thermal behavior of machine tools.

  • In order to utilize the information of well-know grinding database or grinding machine characteristics, a database needs to be designed by considering the delicate property of the machine tools for the high precision and quality of the demanding specification. Among the machine tools for the high precision and quality of the demanding specification. Among the machine tools, machining conditions of the grinding are various and knowledge repeatance obtained form the grinding process are less credable. therefore it is desirable for database, which is used to set the grinding conditions, to utilize the maximum machine tool capability. The present paper studied on the occurance limit of chatter vibration and burn considering the characteristics of machine tool. And also basic experiments were performed to establish the optimum grinding conditions which could maximize the grinding efficiency.

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning are used in many parts of our daily lives, but the basic processes and concepts are barely exposed to most people. Understanding these basic concepts is becoming increasingly important as kids don't have the opportunity to explore AI processes and improve their understanding of basic machine learning concepts and their essential components. Machine learning educational tools can help children easily understand artificial intelligence and machine learning. In this paper, we examine machine learning education tools and compare their features.

  • A method of the volumetric error measurement and calibration of NC machine tools is studied using an artifact method. In this study, a hole-pate is designed and machined using stainless steel. We tested and applied the hole-plate artifact in a commercial CMM(Coordinate Measuring Machine), after calibration of the hole-plate using a precise CMM. It has been shown that not only the measurement of geometric error components but also the 2D length error calculation in a working volume is available using the hole-pate artifact method. The results of study can also be used in NC machine with touch probe as the same method in CMM.

  • This paper described the current status of machine tool technology and its future trends with a particular emphasis on high-speed machining. People in machine tool industry have continuously sought to serve fast-changing manufacturing industry with economical machining solutins. At presents, it appears that more productivity gain is demanded to shorten time-to-market and machining requirements become more stringent. In this regard, this paper firstly addressed a high-speed spindle as a key element for the next-generation machine tools. The sequel to it apparently went to high-speed feed axes and final discussion included the problem of how to optimize overall system including servo function. Lastly a brief look to NC technology including machine intelligence was taken.

  • Recently, as the demand for high efficiency, multi function machine tools is increasing, domestic machine tool industries are investing in research and development for precision machine tools with high speed. This trend is closely correlated with the design technique which is necessary to make new type machine tool compatible with new production system. To achieve high precision, high speed machine tools with reduced chatter, it is needed to develop dynamically rigid structure. In this paper, dynamic optimization of machine structure is presented. At this procedure of dynamic design, dynamic compliance is minimized using Simple Genetic Algorithm(SGA)

  • With increasing the needs for micro and precision parts, micro machining technology using micro tools has been studied to fabricate a small part with high density such as electronics, optics, communications, and medicine industry more than before. Though these micro tools have developed rapidly, it is difficult to apply them to micro fabrication technologies, because of the inherent manufacturing. In this study, micro tools (WC) to produce micro structures and parts were manufactured by cylindrical grinding machine employing ELID (Electrolytic In-process Dressing) technique and the micro tools are fabricated as square shape with the dimension less than 100${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. With the micro tools on the same machine, characteristics of micro grooving and drilling are evaluated. Also we compare normal micro machining with ultrasonic micro machining on the vibration table. It is confirmed that the developed micro tools are fully applicable to micro grooving, micro drilling and free form cutting.

  • Servo mismatch, which affects positioning accuracy of multi-axis machine tools, is usually estimated via the circular test. However, due to mechanical restrictions in measuring instruments, the circular test using a double ball-bar is difficult to apply in miniaturized or super-large sized machine tools. Laser trackers are widely used to measure the form accuracy of parts and the positioning accuracy of driving systems. In this paper, a technique for the servo mismatch estimation of multi-axis machine tools is proposed via the circular test using a laser tracker. To verify the proposed technique, experiments using a double ball-bar and laser tracker are conducted in a 3-axis machine tool. The difference in the evaluation results is 0.05 msec. The servo mismatch for the miniaturized machine tool is also evaluated using the proposed technique.
