  • This paper presents the characteristics of cutting fluid atomization due to its application method. In this study three different application methods; nozzle, jet, mist type is adopted for evaluating the cutting fluid's effect in terms of machinability and environmental consciousness. Cutting fluids are widely used to cool and lubricate the cutting zone in machining process. Cutting fluids mist via atomization in spin-off process can be affected to health risk. To satisfy the increasing concern of health and environment problem and keep the machinability or productivity it is necessary to establish the resonable strategy of cutting fluid usage and optimal control. Tool wear and cutting fluid diffusion rate in the air were measured as machinability index and environmental index in a few turing operation. Through this basic approach it can be also provide the optimization of cutting process and improvement of machine tool design in achieving environmentally conscious machining.

파우더 블라스팅에 의한 $Si_3N_4$-hBN계 머시너블 세라믹스의 미세패턴 가공성 평가 (Micro-Pattern Machining Characteristics Evaluation of $Si_3N_4$-hBN based Machinable Ceramics Using Powder Blasting Process)

  • Sandblasting has recently been developed into a powder blasting technique for brittle materials. In this study, the machinability of $Si_3N_4$-hBN based machinable ceramics are evaluated for micro - pattern making processes using powder blasting. Material properties of the developed machinable ceramics according to the variation of h-BN contents give a good machinability to the ceramics. The effect of scanning times, the size of patterns and variation of BN contents on the erosion depth of samples without mask and samples with different mask patterns in powder blasting of $Si_3N_4$-hBN ceramics are investigated. The Parameters are the impact angle of $90^{\circ}$, the scanning times of nozzle up to 40, and the stand-off distances of 100mm The widths of masked pattern are 0.1mm 0.5mm and 1mm. The powder used is Alumina particles, WA#600. and the blasting pressure of powder is 0.2MPa. Through required experiments, the results are investigated and analyzed. As the results, the machinability of the developed ceramics increases as the BN contents in the ceramics.

고속가공에서 가공성 평가를 위한 3축 공구동력계 개발 (Development of 3-Component tool Dynamometer for Evaluation of Machinability in High Speed Machining)

  • Recently high speed machining is being studied actively to reduce machining time and to improve machining precision. To perform efficient high speed machining, evaluation of high speed machinability must be studied preferentially and it can be identified by investigation of cutting force. To measure cutting forces in high speed machining, dynamometer which has high natural frequency was newly designed using 3-axes piezo force sensor. For newly designed dynamometer, calibration is conducted with sensitivity of force sensor modulated and proper preload and interference force are investigated experimently. Also, cutting force signals of newly designed dynamometer are compared with those of conventional one in high speed cutting experiment and its superiority is confirmed. Then using newly designed dynamometer, high speed machinability is evaluated about cutting force and tool wear in various cutting conditions.

구상흑연주철의 피절삭성과 내마모성에 미치는 Boron 첨가의 효과에 관한 연구 (A Study for the Effects of Boron Addition on Machinability and Wear Resistance of Ductile Cast Iron)

  • It is very important to obtain high performance ductile iron by addition a small amount of alloying elements. In this study, to improve the characteristics of small piston ring casted from ductile iron melt a small amount of boron($0{\sim}0.008wt.%$) that is powerful carbide stabilizer was added in ductile iron, and inspected it`s effects on the microstructure, wear resistance, machinability and mechanical properties. The results obtained from this study are as follows. 1. As the amount of boron increased to 0.04wt.%, the machinability of ductile iron is increased, and if the amount is in excess of 0.04wt.% the machinability is decreased conversely. 2. The wear resistance of ductile iron is improved by boron addition. 3. The recommended ladle addition of boron amount ranges from 0.04wt.% to 0.06wt.% for the use of small piston ring.

  • In this study, we investigated the machinability of machinable ceramics which were developed by a research lab. of Inha Univ., Korea. The effect of the nozzle scanning times, the size of patterns and compositions of BN in ceramics on the erosion depth of samples with no mask and samples with three different mask pattern in powder blasting of machinable ceramics. The blasting conditions were the impact angles 90$^{\circ}$, scanning times of noble up to 30 and the stand-off distances 100mm. The widths of mask pattern were 0.1mm, 0.5mm and 1 mm. The powder was alumina sharp particles, WA#600. The mass flow rate of powder during the erosion test was fixed constant at 150g/min and the blasting pressure of powder at 0.25Mpa

  • Ceramics are very difficult-to-cut materials because of its high strength and hardness. Their machining mechanism is characterized by cracking and brittle fracture. In this paper, to give good machinability to the ceramics, BN powders are added to Si$_3$N$_4$ by volume of 20, 25 and 30%. And the machiniability of the produced ceramics are tested using micro drilling system. Through required experimental works, it is shown that the micro drilling machinability is varied along with the volumetric percentage of BN powders. Also, it is verified that the obtained results can be used to develop new machinable ceramics of good material properties and machinability.

  • This paper deals with the machinability based on turning and drilling tests. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. (1) Turning : The roughness of Machined surface decreases with the increase of the rake angle of tools, and the tool wear becomes smaller with the decrease of the rake angle. When the feed rate becomes larger, the fracture of work material in the vicinity of the cutting edge occurs on a larger scale, eventually decreasing tool wear. (2) Drilling : Considering both tool life and productivity, it is reasonable to cut with the high cutting speed and feed rate. The tool wear increases with the increase of feed rate, and the tendency of feed rate on tool wear becomes stronger at the cutting speed $\geq$30m/min.

  • The high speed machining center(HMC) has been widely applied to manufacture a die and trial product in many machine industry. Because the evaluation for HMC is not sufficiently performed and the efficient cutting conditions can't be selected, a peat loss has been caused in the cost aspect. In this study, the need of preliminary running time and unstable spindle speed is presented by the analysis of acceleration in idling. The Machinability for the TiA1N coated flat end mill and STD11 (H$\sub$R/C60) is evaluated from the trends of tool wear and cutting force according to cutting conditions . The resonance spindle speed is identified through the tool wear and natural frequency test.

  • This paper is related to MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication) milling process, which is one of the environmentally friendly cuttings. The objective is to compare MQL milling process with conventional cutting fluid systems. To this end, machinability of MQL milling process was investigated, followed by the cost evaluation. Cutting force, surface roughness, tool wear, and cutting temperature were compared with each cutting fluid method. Consequently, total production costs wear evaluated with the mathematical models in terms of machining cost and cutting fluid loss.

  • The o]d technique of sandblasting which has been used for paint or scale removing, deburring, and glass decorating has recently been developed into a powder blasting technique for brittle materials, capable of producing micro structures larger than $100\mu\textrm{m}$. In this study, we investigated the effect of the size of abrasive and the stand-off distance on the machinability of SUS 304. The varying parameters were the impact angle $90^{\circ}$, scanning times of nozzle 10 and the different nozzle height between 70mm and 140mm. The diameter of dot pattern were 0.2mm. The powder were alumina sharp particles, WA #600, #800 and #2000. The blasting pressure of powder at 0.3 Mpa.
