Esthetic restorations have been widely used in dental practice, although many studies have focused on the development and improvement of all ceramic restorations. The success of esthetic restorations depends primarily on an optimal bond strength between various veneered ceramics and core materials for esthetic restorations. The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength between various veneered ceramics and core materials for esthetic restorations. 30 metal cores and 20 zirconia cores were fabricated and divided into five groups according to veneered ceramic materials such as Creation porcelain powder, Cercon Ceram Kiss, and IPS e.max ZirPress. Thirty spacimens were prepared using Creation porcelain powder, veneered 3mm height and 3mm in diameter, over the metal cores (n=10). Twenty specimens were prepared using Cercon Ceram Kiss and Zirpress, veneered 3mm height and 3mm in diameter, over the zirconia cores (n=10). The shear bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 1mm/min. Ultimate shear bond strength data were analyzed with One-way ANOVA and the Scheffe's test (p=.05). Within the limits of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: The mean shear bond strengths (MPa) were: 18.44 for Uni metal VH/Creation (NCUC); 18.72 for Heraenium/Creation (NCHC); 16.23 for Wirobond C/Creation (NCWC); 13.88 for Zirconia core/$110{\mu}m$$Al_2O_3$ sandblasting/Cercon Ceram Kiss (ZS110P); 14.61 for Zirconia core/No surface treatment/IPS e.max ZirPress (ZNTH). The mean shear bond strength for NCUC (Uni metal VH/Creation), NCHC (Heraenium/Creation) and NCWC (Wirobond C/Creation) were significantly superior to ZS110P (Zirconia core/$110{\mu}m$$Al_2O_3$ sandblasting/Cercon Ceram Kiss) and ZNTH(Zirconia core/No surface treatment/IPS e.max ZirPress) (p<0.05).
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of resin cement thickness on the microtensile bond strength between zirconium-oxide ceramic and resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty-two freshly extracted molars were transversely sectioned at the deep dentin level and bonded to air-abraded zirconium oxide ceramic disks. The specimens were divided into 8 groups based on the experimental conditions (cement type: Rely X UniCem or Panavia F 2.0, cement thickness: 40 or 160 ${\mu}m$, storage: thermocycled or not). They were cut into microbeams and stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 h. Microbeams of non-thermocycled specimens were submitted to a microtensile test, whereas those of thermocycled groups were thermally cycled for 18,000 times immediately before the microtensile test. Three-way ANOVA and Sheffe's post hoc tests were used for statistical analysis (${\alpha}$=95%). RESULTS. All failures occurred at the resin-zirconia interface. Thermocycled groups showed lower microtensile bond strength than non-thermocycled groups (P<.001). Differences in cement thickness did not influence the resin-zirconia microtensile bond strength given the same resin cement or storage conditions (P>.05). The number of adhesive failures increased after thermocycling in all experimental conditions. No cohesive failure was observed in any experimental group. CONCLUSION. When resin cements of adhesive monomers are applied over air-abraded zirconia restorations, the degree of fit does not influence the resin-zirconia microtensile bond strength.
PURPOSE. The aims of this study were to investigate mechanical properties and hydrothermal degradation behaviour of the cubic-containing translucent yttrium oxide stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four groups of Y-TZP (T, ST, XT, and P), containing different amount of cubic crystal, were examined. Specimens were aged by autoclaving at 122℃ under 2 bar pressure for 8 h. Phase transformation was analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) to measure phase transformation (t→m). Kruskal-Wallis test was used to determine the difference. Surface hardness, biaxial flexural strength, and fracture toughness in values among the experimental groups and verified with Wilcoxon matched pairs test for hardness values and Mann Whitney U for flexural strength and fracture toughness. RESULTS. XRD analysis showed no monoclinic phase in XT and P after aging. Only Group T showed statistically significant decreases in hardness after aging. Hydrothermal aging showed a significant decrease in flexural strength and fracture toughness in group T and ST, while group XT and P showed no effect of aging on fractural strength and fracture toughness with P<.05. CONCLUSION. Hydrothermal aging caused reduction in mechanical properties such as surface hardness, biaxial flexural strength, and fracture toughness of Y-TZP zirconia. However, cubic-containing zirconia (more than 30% by volume of cubic crystal) was assumed to have high resistance to hydrothermal degradation. Clinical significance: Cubic-containing zirconia could withstand the intraoral aging condition. It could be suggested to use as a material for fabrication of esthetic dental restoration.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the span length on the fit of zirconia framework fabricated using CAD/CAM system. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Abutments for single, 4-unit and 6-unit fixed partial prostheses were fabricated. Ten zirconia frameworks were fabricated for each group. The marginal and internal gap were presented by means of replica technique and measured by measuring microscope ($AXIO^{(R)}$, Carl Zeiss, Rochester, NY) and software (I-$solution^{(R)}$, IMT i-solution Inc., Vancouver, BC, Canada). The results were statistically analyzed by multivariate analysis test and Dunnett T3 test for post hoc test (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. There were statistically significant differences at 2, 4, 7, 8 points (mesio-distal section) and b, d, e, f, g (labio-lingual section). In some marginal reference points of 6-unit group (P<.05), the marginal gap were larger than 120 ${\mu}m$. CONCLUSION. Span length of zirconia core may have an influence on marginal and internal fit. Within the limitation of this study, the increase of span length of zirconia framework of 6 or more-unit fixed partial denture may decrease the marginal and internal fit.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of surface grinding and polishing procedures using high speed zirconia diamond burs with different grit sizes on the phase transformation and flexural strength of zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Forty disc shape specimens ($15{\times}1.25mm$) with a cylindrical projection in the center of each disc ($1{\times}3mm$) were fabricated with 3Y-TZP (Prettau, Zirkonzahn, Italy). The specimens were divided into 4 groups (n=10) according to the grinding and polishing procedures: Control group - grinding (coarse-grit diamond bur), Group 1 - grinding (coarse-grit diamond bur) + polishing, Group 2 - grinding (fine-grit diamond bur) + polishing, and Group 3 - grinding (fine grit diamond bur). Each specimen was analyzed by 3D-OM, XRD analysis, and biaxial flexural strength test. RESULTS. Based on the surface morphology by 3D-OM images, polished specimens showed smoother surface and lower roughness value (Ra). In the result of XRD analysis, partial phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic zirconia occurred in all groups. Control group, ground with a coarse grit diamond bur, showed more $t{\rightarrow}m$ phase transformation and lower flexural strength than Groups 1 and 2 significantly. CONCLUSION. The flexural strength in all specimens after grinding and polishing showed over 500 MPa, and those were clinically acceptable. However, grinding with a coarse grit diamond bur without polishing induced the phase transformation and low strength. Therefore, surface polishing is required for the occlusal adjustment using a high speed zirconia diamond bur to reduce the phase transformation and to prevent the decrease of flexural strength of zirconia.
Purpose: Peri-implantitis therapy and implant maintenance are fundamental practices to enhance the longevity of zirconia implants. However, the use of physical decontamination methods, including hand instruments, polishing devices, ultrasonic scalers, and laser systems, might damage the implant surfaces. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effects of physical decontamination methods on zirconia implant surfaces. Methods: A systematic search was conducted using 5 electronic databases: Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane. Hand searching of the OpenGrey database, reference lists, and 6 selected dental journals was also performed to identify relevant studies satisfying the eligibility criteria. Results: Overall, 1049 unique studies were identified, of which 11 studies were deemed suitable for final review. Air-abrasive devices with glycine powder, prophylaxis cups, and ultrasonic scalers with non-metal tips were found to cause minimal to no damage to implantgrade zirconia surfaces. However, hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers with metal tips have the potential to cause major damage to zirconia surfaces. In terms of laser systems, diode lasers appear to be the most promising, as no surface alterations were reported following their use. Conclusion: Air-abrasive devices and prophylaxis cups are safe for zirconia implant decontamination due to preservation of the implant surface integrity. In contrast, hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers with metal tips should be used with caution. Recommendations for the use of laser systems could not be fully established due to significant heterogeneity among included studies, but diode lasers may be the best-suited system. Further research-specifically, randomised controlled trials-would further confirm the effects of physical decontamination methods in a clinical setting.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare osteoblast behavior on zirconia and titanium under conditions cultured with bone morphogenetic protein-2. Methods: MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on sandblasted zirconia and sandblasted/etched titanium discs. At 24 hours after seeding MC3T3-E1, the demineralized bone matrix (DBM) gel alone and the DBM gel with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) were added to the culture medium. The surface topography was examined by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Cellular proliferation was measured at 1, 4, and 7 days after gel loading. Alkaline phosphatase activity was measured at 7 days after gel loading. The mRNA expression of ALPase, bone sialoprotein, type I collagen, runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx-2), osteocalcin, and osterix were evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction at 4 days and 7 days. Results: At 1, 4, and 7 days after loading the DBM gel alone and the DBM gel with BMP-2, cellular proliferation on the zirconia and titanium discs was similar and that of the groups cultured with the DBM gel alone and the DBM gel with BMP-2 was not significantly different, except for titanium with BMP-2 gel. ALPase activity was higher in the cells cultured with BMP-2 than in the other groups, but there was no difference between the zirconia and titanium. In ALPase, bone sialoprotein, osteocalcin, Runx-2 and osterix gene expression, that of cells on zirconia or titanium with BMP-2 gel was much more highly increased than titanium without gel at day 7. The gene expression level of cells cultured on zirconia with BMP-2 was higher than that on titanium with BMP-2 at day 7. Conclusions: The data in this study demonstrate that the osteoblastic cell attachment and proliferation of zirconia were comparable to those of titanium. With the stimulation of BMP-2, zirconia has a more pronounced effect on the proliferation and differentiation of the osteoblastic cells compared with titanium.

Under unlubricated condition, the friction and wear tests of silicon nitride and zirconia manufactured by HIP were carried out at room temperature. The wear resistance of silicon nitride was superior to that of zirconia under low load, whereas the wear resistance of zirconia was superior to that of silicon nitride under high load. Wear model of ceramic was suggested by the microscopic SEM observation of worn surfaces and debris. Theoretical analysis and discussions based on linear fracture mechanics were made out about this ceramic wear model. From the theoretical analysis, a new nondimensional parameter, Scf, was introduced to estimate wear rate of ceramics. This new nondimentional parameter consists of contact pressure, surface defect of contact material, frictional coefficient and fracture toughness.

Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) have saturated the technological market but are still widely used in high-speed and long-distance communication systems. To overcome EDFA saturation and limitations, its erbium-doped fiber is co-doped with other materials such as zirconia and bismuth. This article demonstrates and compares the performance using three different fibers as the gain medium for zirconia-erbium-doped fibers (Zr-EDF), bismuth-erbium-doped fibers (Bi-EDF), and commercial silica-erbium-doped fibers (Si- EDF). The optical amplifier was configured with a double-pass amplification system, with a broadband mirror at the end of its configuration to allow double-pass operation in the system. The important parameters in amplifiers such as optical properties, optical amplification and noise values were also examined and discussed. All three fibers were 0.5 m long and entered with different input signals: 30 dBm for low input and 10 dBm for high input. Zr-EDF turned out to be the most relevant optical amplifier as it had the highest optical gain, longest transmission distance, highest average flatness gain with minimal jitter, and relevant noise figures suitable for the latest communication technology.
