This paper describes in detail proximate composition, nutritional profile, phytochemical constituents, antioxidant activities, antimicrobial potential, and antihemolytic activity (towards human erythrocytes) of various fractions of wild Ganoderma lucidum. Proximate analysis established that wild G. lucidum comprises about $87.02{\pm}5.45%$ of moisture, and the remaining part is a rich source of proteins ($8.59{\pm}0.37%$), crude fiber ($54.21{\pm}1.2%$), and carbohydrate (35.16%) with smaller fat content (3.33 %). Similarly, phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids ($217.51{\pm}0.30mg/g$), ascorbic acid ($116{\pm}7.32mg/g$), phenolics ($360.72{\pm}34.07mg/g$), ${\beta}$-carotenes ($0.42{\pm}0.04{\mu}g/g$), and lycopene ($0.05{\pm}0.00{\mu}g/g$). Extracts of wild G. lucidum in various solvents provided first line protection against Escherichia coli and Pasteurella multocida in the order of ethyl acetate> ethanol> methanol> n-hexane> water. Furthermore, aqueous and methanolic extracts of wild G. lucidum were found to be safe towards human erythrocytes. Overall, wild mushroom (G. lucidum) was found to be a good source of dietary supplements, antimicrobial and antioxidant agents in the pursuance of its commercial utilization in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Compatibility test of the 115 world-wide collections of Ganoderma strains including 61 of Korean origin, were performed by di-mon mating with tester strains G. lucidum G001-1 ($A_1B_1$) and G. tsugae 1109-16 ($A_1B_1$). Unexpected results were found in that 75 strains, formerly considered to be G. lucidum exhibited clamp connections in mating with the tester 1109-16. This observation suggests that these strains require further examination prior to taxonomic classification. Interestingly, this compatibility could be confirmed more easily by the finding of distinct confrontation line between two strains on plate.

This study was investigated the effects of water soluble extract of Ganoderma lucidum kale juice and soidium dextrothyroxine on lipid components in serum of hypercholesterolmemic rats in vivo in order to prevent in cardiovascular disease. Total cholesterol concentrations in serum were significantly increased after feeding cholesterol diet group compared with control group and were significantly increased after feeding cholesterol diet group compared with control group and were lower in Ganoderma lucidum kale juice and sodium dextrothyrioxine diet groups than in control group. Ratio of high density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration to total cholesterol were significantly highest in sodium dextrothyroxine fed groups among diet groups and were higher in Ganodrma lucidum and kale juice fed group than in control group. Phospholipid concentrations in seurm were significantly lower in Ganoderma lucidum kale juice and sodium dextrothyroxine(1.25mg/kg diet) fed groups than in control group and triglyceride concentra-tions were lower in Ganderma lucidum sodium dextrothyroxine fed groups than in other groups. Triiodothyronine concentration in serum were lower in Ganoerma lucdum and kale juice fed groups than in the other groups while it was higher in sodium dextrothyroxine diet group than in other groups. Tetraiodothyronine concentrations is serum were remakably higher in sodium dextrothyroxine fed group than in other groups. Blood glucose concentration was lower in cholesterol diet group than in other groups but was higher in sodium dextrothyroxine diet group than in other groups.
Effects of buprofezin, a chitin synthesis inhibitor of insects, on mycelial growth, protoplast formation and reversion of Coriolus versicolor, Ganoderma applanatum and G. lucidum were investigated. The mycelial growth of C. versicolor, G, applanatum and G, lucidum was severely inhibited by buprofezin treatment, and the inhibition rate severely as the concentration of the buprofezin increased. Aerial mycelia and oidia formation of the mushrooms were increased by buprofezin treatment, but mycelial morphology was not changed. The rate of protoplast formation and reversion of G, applanatum was greatly increased by the treatment of the buprofezin, while that of G. lucidium was decreased. The rate of protoplast formation of C. versicolor was also increased when buprofezin was added to the medium, but the rate of protoplast reversion was not affected by the treatment, From the results obtained in this experiment, we found that the rate of protoplast. formation and reversion was increased by the treatment of the buprofezin in the mushrooms such as C, versicolor and G, applanatum, whose mycelial growth was fast on the medium, while that of G. lucidum, whose mycelial growth was relatively slow, was decreased by the treatment.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of lacquer tree (Rhus verniciflua) extract on ganodermanondiol (GN), tyrosinase and melanin biosynthesis inhibitor, biosynthesis in Ganoderma lucidum mycelia. In HPLC analysis, GN contents were significantly increased in G. lucidum mycelial extracts supplemented with of 1, 5, 10, and 15% lacquer tree extracts (LTE). In addition, G. lucidum mycelial extracts supplemented with LTEs which had no cytotoxicity activity against B16F10 cells, significantly inhibited melanogenesis in B16F10 cells. GN biosynthesis was facilitated by LTE. Taken together, we propose that G. lucidum mycelial extracts supplemented with LTE can be used as an effective ingredient of skin care products in the future.
This study was carried out to investigate the feasibility of Salix gracilistyla production for cosmetic use through mycelial fermentation. The efficacy of this method was confirmed by fermentation using the mycelia of Ganoderma lucidum (a representative medicinal mushroom). Total polyphenol and flavonoid content and DPPH radical scavenging activity of S. gracilistyla extract (SGE) were found to be higher than those of G. lucidum fermented S. gracilistyla extract (GLSGE). GLSGE had relatively lower collagenase activity than SGE. However, GLSGE increased HDFn cell viability more potently than SGE, and increased the biosynthesis of type I procollagen. Thus, GLSGE could be used as an anti-aging cosmetic active ingredient. These results indicate that extract fermentation using G. lucidum mycelia can effectively enhance some beneficial effects of functional materials.
A total number of 916 fruiting bodies of Ganoderma lucidum (Fr.) Karsten grown naturally in Korea were collected to investigate the morphological characters and some other useful characters related to the quality of the fungus and the results obtained are summarized as follows; The host tree showing the highest parasitic rate by the Genoderma lucidum(Fr.) Karsten was oak tree and the parasitic rate of the tree was 86.2%. The order of parasitic rate of the host trees by the fungus next to the oak was peach, chestnut, persimmon and acasia. The size, shape and color of fruiting bodies were varied according to the host trees. The average size of fruiting bodies collected was 40 to 100 mm by 30 to 80mm. The fruiting bodies with pileus size of 60 by 45 mm, pileus thickness of over 10mm, pileus minor axis/stipe length ratio of over 0.65 and pileus thickness/pileus minor axis ratio of over 0.22 were considered having higher commerical values. The external shape of the fruiting body was very important criterion to evaluate the quality of the Ganoderma lucidum (Fr.) Karsten. A great variation in characters such as pileus shape, color, marginal shape, zonation of pileus, pileus thickness, poroid layer of fruiting bodies and shape of stipe were observed from the fruiting bodies of G. lucidum collected in Korea. Further studies will be necessary for the genetic nature of these characters.
Rhodotorula glutinis was inoculated in the medium containing 0 ($S_0$), 0.01 ($S_1$), 0.1 ($S_2$) and 1.0% ($S_3$) Ganodoma lucidum extract and incubated in a shaking incubator at $30^{\circ}C$ for 8 days and the cell growth, sugarity, lipid content, and fatty acid composition were measured to investigate the effects of G. lucidum extract on the growth and biosynthesis of fatty acids by oleaginous yeast, Rhodotorula glutinis. After the 8 day incubation, the cell growth of $S_1,\;S_2\;and\;S_3$ increased 1.6, 1.7 and 2.1 times, respectively, than that of $S_0$. Sugar consumption of incubating medium was decreased but the crude lipid content in R. glutinis was increased with increase of the amount of G. Lucidum extract. Myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic and linoleic acids were identified by GC as the major fatty acids in the crude lipid produced by R. glutinis and the content of unsaturated fatty acids (38.6 mg/g) was greater than that of saturated fatty acids (22.3 mg/g). As the G. lucidum extract concentration increased, fatty acids contents were increased except myristic acid, and the most increase occurred at the addition of 0.1% while they were considerably decreased in the case of the addition of 1.0% G. lucidum extract.

The internal transcribed spacer II regions (ITS II) of the ribosomal DNA gene repeat from Ganoderma spp. were amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequenced. Sequences from 9 species including Ganoderma lucidum, G. tsugae, G. pfeifferi, G. resinaceum, G. australe-applanatum, G. oregonense, G. neo-japonicum, G. applanatum and Inonotus xeranticus as an out-group were compared. The spacer regions of them were $247{\sim}257$ nucleotides in length and contained partial sequences of 5.8S and 25S gene. The reciprocal homologies of each ITS II sequence of the species were in the range of $70{\sim}100%$ except outgroup species, I. xeranticus. According to the analysis of ITS II sequences, Ganoderma spp. constructed 5 clusters. Ganoderma lucidum isolates were to be divided into two groups. One group was consisted of isolates from South Korea. The other group comprised isolates from UK. G. lucidum isolates belonging to the group I were closely related with G. tsugae. These results suggested that G. lucidum from Korea should be G. tsugae, otherwise G. tsugae was to be synonym of G. lucidum.
This experiment was carried out to investigate proper conditions for protoplast isolation and reversion from Ganoderma lucidum and Gctnoderma sp.. In G. lucidum, 10 mg. $ml^{-1}$ Novozyme 234 with 0.6 M sucrose was proper for protoplast isolation. The optimal reaction time of mycelium with lytic enzyme was five hrs. Protoplast isolation from four-day-old mycelium was the most effective. Protoplast isolation from four-day-old mycelium in G. sp. was optimum in the combination of N ovozyme 234 and ${\beta}-glucuronidase$ with 0.6 M sucrose. MCM was suitable for reversion in G. lucidum while SCM was good for G. sp.. The most effective osmoticum stabilizer for protoplast reversion in G. lucidum and G. sp. was 0.6 M sucrose.
