This study was carried out to make the most of them as the fundamental data for reasonable weed control when population of weeds was observed in the alternated fields of lowland and upland. The annual and the perennial paddy weeds in the continuous paddy rice field remarkably decreased when compared to that in the alternated field of paddy rice and soybean. The longer was the duration of upland field condition, the less was the population of lowland weeds and the more was the population of upland weeds. Biennial weeds in the contiuous paddy rice field were less than that in the rotated field of paddy rice and soybean, and this tendency was clear in Alopecurus aequalis Sobol. In the continuous cropping of paddy rice, population of biennial weeds in the culverted field was higher than that in the unculverted one, but in the continuous cropping of soybean this tendency was vice versa.
The experiment was conducted to investigate emergence response of lowland weeds at different soil moisture contents, burying depths and upon changes in soil moisture. Rice germination was over 50% at all burying depths under aerobic condition, but the emergence rate of the soil surface placed seeds in saturated and flooded conditions decreased by 19% and 29%, respectively, as compared with that of aerobic condition. Rice seeds at burying depth of over 3 cm did not emerge at all. The emergence rate of Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) Beauv. in aerobic condition was lower than 30%, but the emergence pattern of E. crus galli (L.) Beauv. at different soil moisture contents and seeding depths was similar to that of rice. Emergence behavior of lschaemum rugosum Salisb., Ludwigia octovalvis (Jacq.) Raven and Sphenoclea zeylanica Gaertn. which are dominant lowland weed species in the Philippines also differed depending on soil moisture conditions and burying depths. lschaemum rugosum Salisb. emerged at all burying depths under aerobic condition, whereasLudwigia octovalvis (Jacq.) Raven emerged only at 0 cm deep under saturated and aerobic condition and Sphenoclea zeylanica Gaertn. at 0 cm deep under flooding condition. Weed seeds planted at 1, 3, and 5 cm deep in continuous flooded and saturated condition did not emerge at all, but upon a change of soil moisture condition from saturated to drainage (S$\rightarrow$D) and flooded to drainage (F$\rightarrow$D), grass weeds began to germinate again and the average emergence rate in S$\rightarrow$D and F$\rightarrow$D were 26% and 5% forE. crusgalIi (L.) Beauv., 9% and 8% forI. rugosum SaIisb., respectively. Weed seeds buried in soil in the pot showed great emergence at S$\rightarrow$D but did not emerge under continuous flooded condition. The diversity index accounting for dominance degree and occurrence aspect of weed, was the lowest at F$\rightarrow$D.

The experiment was carried out to obtain the basic information of weed control in lowland rice field in Gyeongbug province. The results were as follows : In weed distribution on life cycle, annual weed was occupied by 56.5% and perennials were 43.5%, respectively. In morphological distribution of weeds, grass weed was 25.2%, sedges was 12.3% and broad leaf weeds was 62.5%. In particular, weed occurrence of grass weed was much more increased than that of 1971 and 1981 year. Dominant weed species was Echinochloa crusgralli, Sagittaria trifolia, Eleocharis kuroguwai and Monochoria vaginalis in plain land, mid alpine area, and cold salty wind area. Dominant weeds was approximately similar occurrence in normal soil and poorly drained soil Gelds, but sandy soil field was not. Echinochloa crusgalli was dominant in hand transplanting and direct seeding on dry paddy field. Meanwhile, in machine transplanting, Sagittaria trifolia and Ludwigia prostrate were dominant, and occurrence of Echinochloa crusgalli was increased to delaying transplanting. As a result, major dominant weed was Echinochloa crusgalli, Sagittaria trifolia, Ludwigia prostrate, Eleocharis kuroguwai, and Monochoria vaginalis in terms of predominance.
Several factors affecting emergence and tuber formation of lowland perennial weeds were studied at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1988. Period of tuber germination start to final tuber varied by species. Eleocharis kuroguwai and Sagittaria trifolia required longer than 10 days at $30^{\circ}C$ for this while Cyperus serotinus and S. pygmaea needed about 4 days. Application of gibberellic acid shortened this period while Uniconazole application delayed. E. kuroguwai and C. serotinus had ability to emerge under 20cm depth placement. However, S. trifolia could not emerge under 15cm depth. All species decreased their growth with increase in planting depth. E. kuroguwai had least correlated between dry matter production and tuber formation. Clipping of above ground part negatively related with tuber formation eventhough the effect of clipping time was differed by species. The most critical clipping time was 60 days after eremergence (DAE) for E. kuroguwai and 90 DAE for C. serotinus. Covering of colored polyethylene film was also related with tuber formation with varing effects. In general, the order of effectiveness for tuber formation were black. orange. blue and red. Application of Uniconazole and Pachlobutrazol effectively controlled the formation of tuber of E. kuroguwai and this effect enhanced by early application.
The effect of transplanting method of rice seedlings on weed occurrence was investigated at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1983. Rice was transplanted by hand and machine and eleven common herbicides were applied. The greatest weeds were harvested from the plot that rice was not transplanted and more weeds encountered at machine transplanted plot than hand transplanted plot. The degree of weed suppression by rice plant itself was 50% for machine transplatning and 55% for hand transplanting, respectively. Simpson index and community dominance of weed species were the highest in hand transplanting and followed by machine transplanting and no rice plot in order. Rice grain yield was exponentially correlated with the amounts of weed occurrence and more yield loss exhibited at machine transplanting than hand transplanting in the same amount of weeds. In the herbicidal activity, most of herbicides performed better at hand transplanting than machine transplanting while the degree of difference between transplanting methods varied depend on herbicide used.
Eight different weed community types growing in association with transplanted rice were identified in the experimental fields used in these studies. The Importance Value (LV.) of weed species growing in association with rice changed with time. The I. V. of Echinochloa glabrescens Munro ex Hook f. increased from 40 days after transplanting (DAT) until heading and then, decreased from heading to maturity of rice. However, the LV. of Monochoria vaginalis (Burm.) Pres!. and Echinochloa crus-galli ssp. hispidula (Retz.) Honda increased from 40 DAT to maturity while Scirpus maritimus L. decreased from 40 DAT. There was a high negative correlation between grain yield and weed weight at rice heading in all weed communities. The competitive ability of rice against weeds varied depending upon weed species. The highest yield decrease due to weed competition was obtained from the E. crus-galli ssp. hispidula-S. Maritimus community. Forty-two percent yield reduction was caused by competition of 100g dry weight of weeds per square meter of this community type at rice heading. The yield decrease for the same amount of weeds was 10% for the E. glabrescens community, 15% for the M vaginalis community and the M vaginalis-Scirpus supinus L. community and 21% for the M vaginalis-E. glabrescens-Fimbristylis littoralis Gaud.-S. maritimus community type.

1994
The weed survey in lowland rice field in 1992 was conducted to identify weed population change as affected by different elevation, soil type and cultivation pattern at Gangweon province. There were more perennial weeds in plain and east coastal area while more annual weeds in mid alpine and alpine area. Meanwhile, perennial weed species was more dominant at ordinary and sandy soil but annual weed species was more dominant at poorly drained soil. In general, hand and machine(30 day old seedling) transplanting would result in higher dominant weed species of perennial while there was more annual weed species in machine (10 day old seedling) transplanting and dry seeding, respectively. Also, annual weed species was more predominant at spring plowing time compared to autumn plowing time. Particularly, there was change in dominant weed species with time. In 1971 annual weed species was more predominant but perennial weed species was highly dominant in 1981 and 1992.
An experiment was conducted to obtain the basic information about competitive ability of rice against weeds as affected by culm length at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station, Office of Rural Development in 1980. More weeds were harvested from the plot of short statured cultivar, Manseogbyeo compared to the plot of Cheongcheongbyeo that was approximately 10cm taller than Manseogbyeo regardless of planting density variables. Weeds also decreased as rice population increased from $30{\times}15cm$, $40{\times}(10{\times}10cm)$ and to $10{\times}10cm$, in order. The degree of weed suppression and floristic composition was varied depending upon plant spacing and weeding regime subjected at the previous year. The degree of weed suppression became increased with increasing rice population. The degree of weed suppression at the $10{\times}10cm$ plant spacing showed as high as hand weeding subjected in the previous year. However, in terms of floristic composition, Scirpus hotarui Roxb. became dominant when rice had cultivated at $10{\times}10cm$ plant spacing in the previous year while S. hotarui and Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. were both important in the hand weeding plot. The highest grain yield of rice showed at the $10{\times}10cm$ plant spacing while no significant difference was observed between $40{\times}(10{\times}10cm)$ and $30{\times}15cm$ plant spacings for both weeding regimes and both cultivars. However, response of grain yield to weeding regime was differed in two cultivars. For Manseobgyeo, significant grain yield decreased in no weeding plot regardless of plant spacing variables. But in case of Cheongcheongbyeo, grain yield reduction was only recognized at the $30{\times}15cm$ plant spacing. Based on these result it could be concluded that Cheongcheongbyeo (10cm taller in height) seemed to be more competitive against weeds than Manseogbyeo.
An experiment was conducted to obtain the basic information about competitive ability of rice against weeds as affected by eco-geographic race and plant spacing. Generally, more weeds were grown at the plot of Japonica-type cultivar, (Nakdongbyeo) compared to Tongiltype cultivar (Seogwangbyeo). The degree of weed suppression was highest at the 10 ${\times}$ 10cm plant spacing while no difference was observed between 30 ${\times}$ 15cm and 40 ${\times}$ (10 ${\times}$ 10 cm) plant spacings in both cultivar;. In all treatments except the plot of 10 ${\times}$ 10 cm plant spacing of Seogwangbyeo, singnificant amount of weeds was higher for no weeding plot compared to hand weeding plot. Grain yield loss due to weed competition was the highest at the 40 ${\times}$ (10 ${\times}$ 10cm) plant spacing and followed by 30 ${\times}$ 15cm and 10 ${\times}$ 10cm plant spacing, in order, for Seogwangbyeo. However, for Nakdongbyeo, the highest grain yield loss was obtained from the 30 ${\times}$ 15cm plant spacing and grain yield was not affected at the 10 ${\times}$ 10cm plant spacing. Rice grain yield was highly correlated with weed weight for both cultivars (Seogwangbyeo; Y = 5.44 - 0.0128 X, r = -0.929$^{**}$, Nakdongbyeo; Y = 4.96 - 0.0103 X, r = -0.934$^{**}$). To reduce grain yield by 50%, weed weight of 212.5g/sq.m for Seogwangbyeo and 241g/sq.m for Nakdongbyeo was needed, respectively. This result implied that Nakdongbyeo was more competitive against weeds compared to Seogwangbyeo.
Experiments were conducted to evaluate the herbicidal characteristics of pyrazolate [4-(2,4-dichloro benzoyl)-1,3-dimethylpyrazol-5-yl-p-toluene-sulphonate] in greenhouse and lowland rice field. Pyrazolate controlled effectively most of annual weeds and such perennial weeds as Sagittaria pygmaea MIQ., Potamogeton distinctus A. BENN, Sagittaria trifolia L., Cyperus serotinus ROTTB, and Scirpus hotarui OHWI., whereas Eleocharis kuroguwai OHWI. was tolerent to pyrazolate. Although pyrazolate was applied at 2 to 10 days after transplanting, there was no difference in weed control The weeding effect was not influenced by percolation, depth of water and soil type. No difference in crop injury of rice was found with various levels of seedling age, transplanting depth, percolation, depth of water, soil type and time of application. When combined with butachlor, the mixture gave the same effect on rice phytotoxicity and weed control as pyrazolate alone did. Pyrazolate moved 1 to 2cm downward in lowland soil regardless of soil type and percolation. The herbicidal activity of pyrazolate persisted in soil for 60 to 90 days, depending on soil type, percolation and presence of soil microorganism.
