  • The effect of Mn and Nb additions on the electrical properties of BaTiO$_3$ has been studied by means of equilibrium electrical conductivity as a function of temperature, oxygen partial pressure(Po$_2$) and composition. If the manganese ion is added to the normal Ti site, i.e. BaTi$_{1-x}Mn_xO_{\delta-6}$, the equilibrium conductivity shows strong evidence of acceptor-doped behavior. The conductivity minimum, corresponding to the transition from oxygen excess, p-type behavior to oxygen deficient, n-type behavior with decreasing Po$_2$, is displaced to lower Po$_2$ and is broadened and flattened. The partial replacement of Mn ion with Nb decreases the acceptor-doped effect and the total replacement exhibits a typical donor-doped behavior. It was confirmed that unlike undoped or other acceptor-doped behavior. It was confirmed that unlike undoped or other acceptor-doped samples, for the p-type region, the electrical conductivity follows the 1/6th power dependence of oxygen partial pressure.

  • Molecular motion at the surface of monodisperse polystyrene (PS) films with various chain end groups was studied by scanning probe microscopy. Surface glass transition temperature ($T_{g^s}$) of the PS films was much lower than the corresponding bulk value. And, the magnitude of $T_{g^s}$ was strongly dependent on chain end chemistry. This result can be explained in terms of the chain end concentration at the surface. Time-temperature superposition principle was applied to rheological analysis at the surface. The apparent activation energy of the surface ${\alpha}_{a}$-relaxation process was approximately a half of that for the bulk sample. This result clearly indicates that the cooperativity for the surface segmental motion was reduced in comparison with that in the bulk region.

  • To investigate transition region in welded overlay relating to disbonding crack, the effect of vanadium addition on disbonding of Cr-Mo steels overlay welded with austenitic stainless steel was studied. V modified Cr-Mo steels have a higher resistance to disbonding than V free Cr-Mo steel. One reason is due to the fact that fine vanadium carbide precipated in base metal traps hydrogen and thus decreases the susceptibility to the disbonding. The second is related to the higher stability of the vanadium and stable carbides formed during PWHT, in which the carbon diffusion to the interface is lower than for V free Cr-Mo steel. Decreasing the carbon content at the interface of the weld overlay shows good resistance to the disbonding. Hence, it is important to control the carbon content at the interface of the weld overlay.

  • Effects of deformation at austenite non-recrystallization region and cooling rate on the microstructure and mechanical properties of low carbon (0.06 wt. %) high strength low alloy steels have been investigated. Average grain size decreased and polygonal ferrite transformation promoted with increasing deformation amount due to increase of ferrite nucleation site. As cooling rate increased, the major microstructure changed from polygonal ferrite to acicular ferrite and the fraction of M/A constituents gradually increased. Discontinuous yielding occurred in highly deformed specimen due to the formation of polygonal ferrite. However, small grain size of highly deformed specimen caused lower ductile-to-brittle transition temperature than slightly deformed specimen.

  • A dilatometer was used to investigate the effect of cure conditions and the presence of filler in an epoxy system. These studies showed shrinkage in the cured epoxy when heating it through the glass transition temperature region. The magnitude of the shrinkage, related to stress build up in the epoxy during curing, was influenced by the processing conditions, filler presence and the nature of the mold used to contain the resin. Cure and cyclic cure at a lower temperature, prior to a post cure, decreased the magnitude of observed shrinkage. Cure shrinkage decreased with number of cyclic cure. Post cured samples outside the mold led to less shrinkage compared with sample in the mold. And sample containing kaolin filler showed less shrinkage than unfilled sample.

  • The pumping characteristics of a single-stage disk-type drag pump (DTDP) are calculated for the variation of the vertical clearance between a rotor and stator by the three-dimensional direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. The gas flow mainly belongs to the molecular transition flow region. Spiral channels of a DTDP are cut on the both the upper and lower sides of a rotating disk, but a stationary disk is planar. The interaction between molecules is described by the variable hard-sphere model. The no time counter method is used as a collision sampling technique. The vertical clearance has a significant effect on the pumping performance. Experiments are performed under the outlet pressure range of 0.4∼533 Pa. When the numerical results are compared with the experimental data, the numerical results agree well quantitatively

  • The effects of melting and casting conditions on cast structures of Cu-Sn-Pb alloys were studied. Specimens were prepared at different pouring temperatures of $1100^{\circ}C$ to $1260^{\circ}C$ with use of various kind of molds, green sand mold, $CO_2$ sand mold, shell mold, furan sand mold and metallic mold. (1) The transition of equiaxed to columnar structure greatly influenced by adding elements and mold binders. (2) The change of equiaxed structure according to pouring temperatures were expressed by separation theory. Lower pouring temperature and rapid cooling rate increase hardness and it's further increase was shown in the region of columnar structure. (3) Proper controls of pouring temperature, cooling rate and mold binder were important factors to improve wear properties of Cu-Sn-Pb alloys castings.

  • The instability curve of a Rijke tube system was obtained accurately by following different paths of heat power and flow-rate for three regions and by defining its locus from the criterion based on the measured sound pressure levels. The unstable limits in the region of flow-rate lower than that at the minimal power are compared with previous data. To observe the effect of turbulence on the unstable limits, inflow turbulence was introduced by placing a bundle of circular cylinders upstream of the heating part ($50). The large-amplitude inflow fluctuation may delay the transition of the chamber acoustic mode to the unstable Bone even at a sufficient power.

  • Transition to chaotic convection is investigated for natural convection of a fluid with Pr=0.1 in a wide-gap horizontal annuls. The unsteady two-dimensional stream-function-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As the Rayleigh number is increased, the steady 'downward flow' bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with a fundamental frequency, and afterwards a period-doubling bifurcation occurs. As the Rayleigh number is increased further, the chaotic flow regime is reached after a sequence of successive Hopf bifurcation to quasi-periodic and chaotic flow regimes. The route to chaos shows the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse scenario. The flow of chaotic regime displays complex coalescence and separation of eddies in the side and lower region of the annulus.
