Aquatic and riparian vegetation of river ecosystems are very important both in ecological and management perspectives. Vegetation surveys were conducted to understand the characteristics of riparian vegetation in the mid and lower reaches of the Nakdong River, Korea. A total of 68 families and 260 species were identified at eleven survey sites. The numbers of taxa were similar to those reported in a previous survey in 1996,but the percentage of naturalized plants increased more than two times compared to that in the previous survey. Survey sites near Yangsan Bridge and Nambu Park in Yangsan showed the highest percentage of naturalized plant species. Urbanization indices of the survey sites were high at 18.8% on average. Therophytes were the most dominant plant life form at the survey sites with 39.2% of total plants identified, followed by phanerophytes (19.2%), hemicryptophytes (18.9%), aquatic plants (13.9%), cryptophytes (5.8%), and chamaephytes (3.1%). The relative composition of hemicryptophytes decreased whereas those of therophytes and chamaephytes increased compared to those in the survey in 1996. This may be due to increase in dryness of riparian soils or degradation of riparian areas. Plant compositions at sites near Jeokpo Bridge and Hwoicheon suggest that the composition and distribution of riparian vegetation are affected by land use pattern surrounding riparian areas or human accessibility to the areas.
Sediment from the upstream channel has been deposited near the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage (NREB) due to the mild slope and decreased velocity. The annual mechanical dredging to ensure the flood capacity has been performed to remove the deposited sediment. However, the dredging method is not considered as an effective countermeasure due to high cost and long time to operate. Therefore, many methods for sedimentation reduction have been proposed for NREB. Especially, the channel contraction method to mitigate sedimentation problem by changing the channel geometry from 2 km to 3 km upstream of NREB has been recently suggested as an effective countermeasure. However, there is the possibility that the channel contraction method induces flood level increase compared to original condition. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate quantitatively the flood level changes in the upstream and downstream section due to the channel contraction method for NREB. In this study, water level changes by 10% channel contraction of whole width has been evaluated using the HEC-RAS model and simulated with and without channel contraction for various flood discharge. As a result, water level in the section where the channel was contracted was decreased by 0.02 m and flood level at the upstream of channel contracted was increased up to 0.015 m for the 500-year flood.
Calculation of the monthly water balance for Nakdong River basin for the period from 1958 to 1968 is made by determining three components independently: precipitation, runoff and evapotranspiration. The areal precipitation is computed by the Thiessen method using the records of nine meteorological stations in the basin, and the runoff is the flow gauged at Jindong which is located on the most downstream. For the computation of evapotranspiration, the Morton method is adopted because this method is relatively fit best in the calculation of water balance among the Morton, Penman and Thornthwaite methods. The values of Morton evapotransp iration are corrected by the factor of 0.82 in the basin in order to bring the error to zero. The areal evapotranspiration is the arithmetic mean of the Morton estimates at the stations. Mean water balance components in the Nakdong river basin are 1117.0mm, 600.6mm and 516.4m for precipitation, runoff and evapotranspiration respectively. Accordingly, the mean runoff ratio comes out to be 0.54. The smallest values of runoff coefficient are due for Daegu area, while the largest ones are for the southwest of the basin with the higher rainfall and high elevations there. The amount of runoff obtained by both Thornthwaite and Budyko methods for water balance computations indicate 59 and 60 per cent of actual values which are lower than the expected. An attempt is made to find the best reliable rainfall-runoff relation among the four methods proposed by Schreiber, 01'dekop, Budyko and Sellers. The modified equation of Schreiber type for annual runoff coefficient could be obtained with the smallest mean error of 11 per cent.
SWAT model was applied for the Nakdong River Basin to characterize water quality variability and assess the feasibility of using the load duration curve to water quality management. The basin was divided into 67 sub-basins considering various watershed environment, and rainfall runoff and pollutant loading were simulated based on 6 year measurements of meteo-hydrological data, discharge data of treatment plants, and water quality data (SS, T-N and T-P). The results demonstrate that non-point source loads during wet season increase by 80 ~ 95% of total loads. Although the rate of water flow governs the amount of SS that is transported to the main streams, nutrient concentrations are highly elevated during dry season by being concentrated. This phenomenon is more pronounced in the lower basin, receiving large amounts of urban point source discharges such as treated sewages. Also, the load duration curves (LDC) demonstrate dominant source problems based on the load exceedances, showing that SS concentrations are associated with the rainy season and nutrients, such as T-P, may be more concentrated at low flow and more diluted at higher flow. Overall, the LDC method could be used conveniently to assess watershed characteristics and pollutant loads in watershed scale.
