Thermal decomposition reactions of polystyrene using a new heating medium were carried out by a batch system at 190-280 $^{\circ}C$ to clarify the manner in which decomposition is initiated. Polystyrene obtained from a commercial source and low molecular weight compounds obtained from the thermal decomposition were analyzed by GC, GPC, IR, $^{13}$ C-NMR and GC-MS. The main chain underwent virtually no change by heat application. Polystyrene underwent decomposition below its molding temperature and the major decomposition products were 2,4,6-triphenyl-1-hexene (trimer), 2,4-diphenyl-1-butene(dimer) and styrene (monomer). Ethylbenzene, propylbenzene, naphthalene, benzaldehyde, biphenyl and 1,3-diphenylpropane were detected as minor products. This paper presents a new method for examining the decomposition of polystyrene at low temperature into volatile low molecular weight compounds.
We report a new method using a heating medium for the thermal decomposition of epoxy resin (EP) at temperatures ranging from 50 to 200$^{\circ}C$. EP decomposition also occurred below 50$^{\circ}C$ during a 6-day period to generate bisphenol A (BPA) at concentrations as high as 5 ppm. When polyethylene glycol was used as a heating medium, we determined the kinetics of the EP decomposition at low temperature. We determined the apparent activation energy of the overall decomposition to be 40.8 kJ/mol and the frequency factor to be 2.3${\times}$10$^3$ by monitoring the rate of BPA formation. Thus, EP is clearly unstable upon the application of heat.
An experimental study has been carried out to investigate a thermal decomposition of urea solution at relative low temperature with a lab-scaled exhaust pipe. The conversion efficiency of reductant considered with both ammonia and HNCO related with the urea injection quantity, inflow gas velocity and temperature. The conversion efficiency of ammonia was larger than that of HNCO under all experimental conditions unlike the theoretical thermolysis reaction.
Various types of plasma source applied in $CH_4$ decomposition process are compared. DBD by pulse and AC power, spark by pulse and AC power, rotating arc and hollow cathode plasma are chosen to be compared. The results show that $CH_4$ conversion per given unit power is relatively high in hollow cathode plasma and rotating arc that induces rather high temperature condition and that is why both thermal dehydration and plasma induced decomposition contribute for the overall process. In case of DBD wherein high temperature electron and low temperature gas molecule coexist, the process shows low conversion rate, for in rather low temperature condition the contribution of thermal dehydration is lowered. Selectivity of $C_2H_6$ and $C_2H_2$ is shown to be a good parameter of the relative contribution of plasma chemistry in the overall process. From the results we concluded that required condition of plasma source for a cost effective and high yield $CH_4$ decomposition is to have characteristics of both thermal plasma and non thermal plasma in which temperature is high above a certain threshold state for thermal dehydration and electron induced collision is maximized in the same breath.
The catalytic decomposition of CFC-113(1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane) was studied over an activated carbon catalyst in a fixed-bed reactor at the temperature from 300 to 600$^\circ$C, the space velocity (SV) of 1800 $\sim 14400h^{-1}$ and the mole ratio(decomposition agent/CFC-113) of 0.25 $\sim$ 5. In the absence of a decomposition agent, the decomposition efficiency of CFC-113 was low but when a decomposition agent was added to the gas stream, it was dramatically increased with the increase of temperature. In particular, in the presence of n-hexane as the decomposition agent it showed a high decomposition efficiency compared with benzene at 400$^\circ$C. It was found that the decomposition activity of CFC-113 was very sensitive to reaction temperature. Thus it is expected that to raise the reaction temperature is more effective than to increase the residence time and the amount of decomposition agent. Over the activated carbon catalyst more than 99% decomposition was achieved at the reaction temperature of 600$^\circ$C, SV of 7200$h^{-1}$, the mole ration $(C_6H_{14}/CFC-113)$ of 1 in this study.
Fe, Ni and Co, typical active components, were dispersed on $Al_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ for $SO_3$ decomposition. $SO_3$ decomposition was conducted at the temperature ranges from $750^{\circ}C$ to $950^{\circ}C$ using the prepared catalysts. Alumina based catalysts showed the surface areas higher than Titania based catalysts, which resulted from spinel structure formation of alumina based catalysts. Catalytic $SO_3$ decomposition reaction rates were in the order of Fe>Co${\gg}$Ni. The metal sulfate decomposition temperature were in the order of Ni>Co>Fe from TGA/DTA analysis of metal sulfate. During $SO_3$ decomposition, metal sulfate can form on the catalysts. $SO_2$ and $O_2$ can be produced from the decomposition of metal sulfate. In that point of view, the less is the metal sulfate deomposition temperature, the higher can be the $SO_3$ decomposition activity of the metal component. Therefore, it can be concluded that metal component with the low metal sulfate decomposition temperature is the pre-requisite condition of the catalysts for $SO_3$ decomposition reaction.
The sonolytic decomposition of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC 113) and several alternative compounds, such as HCFC 225ca, HCFC 225cb, and HFC 134a, in.aqueous solutions was investigated. The CFC 113 with a high volatility and a low solubility in water was rapidly decomposed with increasing sonication time. The decomposition rates were influenced by the initial concentration of CFC 113, the reaction temperature, and the gas/liquid phase volume ratio but were independant of the pH of solution. The predominant pathway of the decomposition of CFC 113 by sonication was not the oxidation by OH radicals but the pyrolysis with high temperature and pressure inside of the cavitation bubble. The pyrolysis in the cavitation bubble resulted in an almost complete mineralization of CFC 113 with the high efficient formation of inorganic products (Cl$^{[-10]}$ , F$^{[-10]}$ , CO, $CO_2$). The addition of zinc powder on the decomposition of CFC 113 by sonication caused an acceleration of the decomposition. Also, HCFCs and HFC 134a were found to be readily decomposed by the pyrolysis induced from the sonication.
This study was conducted to investigate the pyrolysis characteristics of switchgrass using TGA-FTIR instrument. Switchgrass is a high yielding perennial grass that has been designated as a potential energy crop, because of its high energy value. Ground switchgrass were pyrolysed at different heating rates of 10, 20, 30, and $40^{\circ}C/min$ in a TGA-FTIR instrument. The thermal decomposition characteristics of switchgrass were analyzed, and the gases volatilized during the experiment were identified. The thermal decomposition of switchgrass started at approximately $220^{\circ}C$, followed by a major loss of weight, where the main volatilization occurred, and the thermal decomposition was essentially completed by $430^{\circ}C$. The pyrolysis process was found to compose of four stages; moisture evaporation, hemicellulose decomposition, cellulose decomposition, and lignin degradation. The peak temperatures for hemicellulose decomposition ($306^{\circ}C$ to $327^{\circ}C$) and cellulose decomposition ($351^{\circ}C$ to $369^{\circ}C$) were increased with greater heating rates. FTIR analysis showed that the following gases were released during the pyrolysis of switchgrass; $CO_2$, CO, $CH_4$, $NH_3$, COS, $C_{2}H_{4}$, and some acetic acid. The most gas species were released at low temperature from 310 to $380^{\circ}C$, which was corresponding well with the observation of thermal decomposition.
The effect of diisocyanate type on the decomposition temperature of polyurethane (PU) hydrolysis was investigated in a subcritical water medium up to 250℃. PU samples were prepared using different types of diisocyanate: two aromatic diisocyanates (4,4'-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and methyl phenylene diisocyanate (TDI)), one unbranched aliphatic diisocyanate (hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI)), and two cyclic aliphatic diisocyanates (4,4'-methylene dicyclohexyl diisocyanate (H12MDI) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI)). The pressure had no effect on hydrolysis in the range of 70-250 bar. The decomposition temperature of the PU samples increased in the following order: TDI-PU (199℃) < H12MDI ≈ IPDI ≈ HDI (218-220℃) < MDI-PU (237℃). This order of increase in temperature is related to the electron-donating ability of the group to connected to the nitrogen of the urethane unit. When the temperature of the (PU + water) mixture reached the specific decomposition temperature, the PU samples hydrolyzed completely within 5 min into primary amine and 1,4-butanediol. The hydrolysis products from MDI-PU and H12MDI-PU were separated into a liquid phase rich in (BD + water) and a solid low phase rich in amine, whereas the products from TDI-, IPDI-, and HDI-PU existed in a single aqueous phase.
