  • In this study, a quantitative review was performed on the mechanical performance, permeation resistance of concrete, and durability of surface-modified coarse aggregates (SMCA) produced using low-quality recycled coarse aggregates, the surface of which was modified using a fine inorganic powder. The shear bond strength was first measured experimentally and the interface between the SMCA and the cement matrix was observed with field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that a reinforcement of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ), a weak part of the concrete, by coating the surface of the original coarse aggregate with surface-modification material, can help suppress the occurrence of microcracks and improve the mechanical performance of the aggregate. Also, the use of low-quality recycled coarse aggregates, the surfaces of which were modified using inorganic materials, resulted in improved strength, permeability, and durability of concrete. These results are thought to be due to the enhanced adhesion between the recycled coarse aggregates and the cement matrix, which resulted from the improved ITZ in the interface between a coarse aggregate and the cement matrix.

  • In the past, recycled aggregate was used very limitedly in low value-added areas such as the base layer of roads. However, in response to the shortage of natural aggregate, high consciousness of resource saving and changed idea on environment, the quality of recycled aggregate has been improved considerably, and the percentage of recycled construction waste is increasing every year compared to simple landfill or incineration. Recently the Act on the Promotion of Construction Waste Recycling was enacted on December 2003 for the efficient use of recycled aggregate, and the Standards for the Quality of Recycled Aggregate for Concrete (Proposal) were announced in order to use and manage recycled aggregate according to quality. According to the Standards for the Quality of Recycled Aggregate for Concrete (Proposal), it is recommended to substitute recycled coarse aggregate and fine aggregate below 30% each. However, compared to the trend of recycling, the recycling rate of aggregate is still quite low. It is because of low performance of recycled aggregate, users' lack of understanding, etc. These problems basically come from the decrease of strength of recycled concrete resulting from the use of recycled aggregate, and recycled aggregate is still considered not reliable because there have been not many cases of actual application. If the basic problem of strength decrease is solved and data on recycled aggregate is provided through actual field placing, we may maximize the use of recycled aggregate. Thus, in order to maximize the use of recycled aggregate that satisfy the recycled aggregate quality standards, the present study made a mock-up similar to real structures, evaluated its performance and examined the field applicability of recycled aggregate concrete.

  • In this study, we analyzed the problems of existing construction waste shredding technology to diagnose the problems of low quality recycled aggregates and to develop a new mortar peeling technique to produce high-quality recycled coarse aggregate for concrete. The purpose of this study is to verify the effectiveness of mortar peeling technique by doing simulation prior to on-site application and to check the quality properties of recycled coarse aggregate produced by applying a mortar peeling technique. We manufactured and installed High speed Rotating Grinder on-site and analyzed the correlation between mortar adhesion amount, dry density and water absorption rate of recycled coarse aggregate.

  • As the importance of recycled materials is being emphasized more in the Korean construction market, the production quality has been improved to a significantly high level. Compared to the high quality, however, there are used very limitedly. Among recycled construction materials, recycled aggregates produced through the retreatment of waste concrete are drawing attention because of lack of natural aggregate and heightened consciousness of resource saving and environmental protection and, as a consequence, they are close to natural aggregates in terms of production technology and quality. Despite the high quality and productivity, however,. the utilization of recycled aggregates is very low. Thus, in order to maximize the utility of recycled aggregates, the present study examined the usability of recycled aggregates using both recycled coarse aggregates and recycled fine aggregates together and derived optimal quantity and mixture ratio in the combined use of the two types of recycled aggregate.

  • Recently, the amount of disposed construction materials like demolished concrete is growing fast and the shortage of natural concrete aggregate is becoming serious. Therefore, recycling of aggregate extracted from the demolished concrete is getting important and use of the recycled aggregate for concrete has been seriously considered. However, the use of the recycled aggregate even for low performance concrete is very limited because recycled aggregate which contains large amount of old mortar has very low quality. Therefore, removing the paste sticked to the recycled aggregate is very important in the manufacturing of high quality recycled aggregate. We have studied a series of research according to complex crushing method, which is removed the ingredient of cement paste from recycled fine aggregate using both the low speed wet abrasion crusher as mechanical process and the acid treatment as chemical processes. This paper is to analyze the quality of the recycled fine aggregate produced by those complex method and investigate optimum manufacturing condition for recycled fine aggregate by the design of experiments. The experimental parameters considered are water ratio, coase aggregate ratio, and abrasion time. As a result, data concerning the properties of recycled sand were obtained. It was found that high quality recycled fine aggregate could be to obtain at the condition of the fifteen minute of abrasion-crusher time and the over 1.0 of recycled coarse aggregate ratio.

  • The quality of recycled aggregate is affected by original concrete strength and the manufacturing process of recycled aggregates. In this study, the porosity of old and new mortar, and the compressive strength of concrete were investigated to examine the influence of recycled aggregate on the concrete. Six kinds of recycled coarse aggregates were produced from concrete blocks of differing strength levels (A:60. 1MPa, B:41.7MPa, C:25.5MPa). Original concrete strength and the bond mortar of recycled aggregate influences the pore structures of both old and new mortar. The pore size distribution of old mortar was found to be greatly affected by age, and the reduction of the porosity of bond mortar on low strength recycled aggregate increased at a greater rate than that of bond mortar on high strength recycled aggregate. The pore size distribution of new mortar in recycled aggregate concrete changed in comparison with that of new mortar in virgin aggregate concrete. The total porosity of new mortar using B level recycled aggregates was smaller than that of new mortar with A, and C level recycled aggregates. Moreover, the compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete was found to have been affected by original concrete strength. The compressive strength of concrete only changed slightly in the porosity of new mortar over $15\%$, but increased rapidly in the porosity of new mortar fewer than $15\%$.

  • Recently, the reuse of coarse aggregate derived from demolished concrete was introduced into practice with two environmental aspects: protection of natural sources of aggregate and recycling of construction waste. However, recycled aggregate has been used for the very limited application such as subbase material for pavement and constructional filling material because it was considered as low quality constructional materials. In the present study, in order to examine the possibility that recycled aggregate can be used for concrete mixing, we conducted various experimental tests to identify mineralogical, chemical and mechanical properties of recycled aggregate and to determine the workability and mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). The cement paste and mortar contained in recycled aggregate significantly affect the basic mechanical properties of aggregate and the workability and mechanical properties of RAC. However, RCA mixed with the proper replacement ratio of recycled aggregate shows the comparable compressive strength and freeze and thaw resistance to those of normal concrete. Therefore, it is considered that recycled aggregate can be widely used for concrete if the cement paste and mortar can be efficiently removed from recycled aggregate and/or if the effective replacement ratios of recycled aggregate are applied for mixing concrete.

  • Recently, attempts of replacing some of natural aggregate with mix of low quality aggregate are carried out for stable supply of aggregate. However, low quality aggregate such as recycled aggregate produced during the disposal process of construction wastes and by-product aggregate produced by industrial activities has problem of failing to comply to KS Standards. Therefore, we have compared fundamental properties of concrete by using granite crushed aggregate, recycled aggregate, blast furnace and electric arc furnace slag aggregate for effective utilization of lacking aggregate resources. As the result, slump in case of mixed use of aggregate was increased 0~10% compared to single use. Therefore, it is judged to be economically advantageous as it can expect effects in unit quantity or reduction of SP agent. Compressive strength in case of mixed use of aggregate was increased 0~10% compared to single use as it filled internal crevice of concrete with continuous particle size distribution. Accordingly, if we utilize by satisfying standard particle scope through mix of aggregate with different cause of formation in proper ratio, it was possible to confirm utility of mixed aggregate with demonstration of effects of increases of fluidity and compressive strength of concrete.

  • In this research, influence of low quality aggregate on engineering properties of concrete was evaluated experimentally. From the experiment, the fresh properties of slump and air content were controlled with unit water and AE dosage and all mixture were designed to have similar fresh properties of slump and air content with various quality of aggregate. Under this conditions, comparing with the mixture with high quality aggregate, the mixture with low quality aggregate showed the unit water and AE dosage were increased about 18 and 98%, respectively, because of poor grading and quantity of fines. For compressive strength, the low quality aggregate, specifically, exploded debris, clay sand, and sea sand contributed on decreasing compressive strength about 20~35%. Additionally, the concrete mixture including low quality fine and coarse aggregate showed adverse quality in not only compressive strength but also durability of freeze-thawing resistance, drying shrinkage, carbonation, and chloride ingression. Therefore, it is considered that for low quality aggregate, extra treatment processes such as washing or controlling gradation, and regulation to limit the use of low quality aggregate are needed.

  • In this research, the influence of low-quality aggregate on engineering properties of concrete was experimentally evaluated. From a series of experiment, the results can be summarized as follow: first, the low-quality aggregate in concrete mixture caused up to 83% of decreased slump. For air content, low-quality aggregate increased air content of concrete mixture. Especially, when sea sand was used, because of the narrow gradation with small size, the air content was significantly increased. The compressive strength of concrete mixtures with low-quality aggregates were decreased up to 29% while some cases showed slightly increased compressive strength at early age. Additionally, the concrete mixture mixed with the exploded debris as a coarse aggregate showed approximately 5 to 20% of decreased compressive strength comparing with high-quality of manufacturing rock. In summary, because of the decreased workability of concrete mixture mixed with low-quality aggregates such as exploded debris, clay, and sea sand, it is concerned that worse quality of the ready mixed concrete, produced with the extra water to compensate the decreased workability.
