  • This paper is to investigate the effect of poor quality aggregate source used in Korea on the mixture proportion and strength development of the high strength concrete fixed at 450 kg/m3 of cement contents. For aggregate kinds, good quality crushed stone from KS certified manufacturer and low quality crushed stone from non certified construction field are used. For fine aggregates, river sand, land sand, sea sand and mixed sand are also used. It is found that the use of low quality aggregates resulted in an increase of water demand considerably due to poor gradation of aggregate and excessive fine particles. Test results indicate that the use of low quality aggregate also decreases the compressive strength compared with that of good quality aggregate.

  • As the importance of recycled materials is being emphasized more in the Korean construction market, the production quality has been improved to a significantly high level. Compared to the high quality, however, there are used very limitedly. Among recycled construction materials, recycled aggregates produced through the retreatment of waste concrete are drawing attention because of lack of natural aggregate and heightened consciousness of resource saving and environmental protection and, as a consequence, they are close to natural aggregates in terms of production technology and quality. Despite the high quality and productivity, however,. the utilization of recycled aggregates is very low. Thus, in order to maximize the utility of recycled aggregates, the present study examined the usability of recycled aggregates using both recycled coarse aggregates and recycled fine aggregates together and derived optimal quantity and mixture ratio in the combined use of the two types of recycled aggregate.

  • In this study, a quantitative review was performed on the mechanical performance, permeation resistance of concrete, and durability of surface-modified coarse aggregates (SMCA) produced using low-quality recycled coarse aggregates, the surface of which was modified using a fine inorganic powder. The shear bond strength was first measured experimentally and the interface between the SMCA and the cement matrix was observed with field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that a reinforcement of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ), a weak part of the concrete, by coating the surface of the original coarse aggregate with surface-modification material, can help suppress the occurrence of microcracks and improve the mechanical performance of the aggregate. Also, the use of low-quality recycled coarse aggregates, the surfaces of which were modified using inorganic materials, resulted in improved strength, permeability, and durability of concrete. These results are thought to be due to the enhanced adhesion between the recycled coarse aggregates and the cement matrix, which resulted from the improved ITZ in the interface between a coarse aggregate and the cement matrix.

  • In the last decade, the supply of natural aggregates has been continuously increased due to the other types of aggregates. In general, aggregates constitute 70-80% of the total volume of concrete, so the quality of aggregates is main factor controlling physical characteristics of concrete. For this reason, physical properties of aggregate according to different rock types were studied. The majority of crushed aggregates is taken out of granite, gneiss, sandstone, andesite, basalt and so forth. The physical properties of these rock types were tested and most of them fell within the acceptable limit on the base of Korean standard regulation. The major lithology of the crushed aggregates is granite and gneiss, both of which are marked for more than 50% of total lithology thpes in Korea. A to the physical properties of granite, the high specific gravity coincides with low porosity, low absorption ratio, while the abrasion and soundness index show, in general, no specific trend. It has been assumed that slight differences of the physical properties of granite aggregates are related with those of the mineral composition, grain size, and so on. In comparison to granite, the physical properties of gneiss have little correlation one after another. This trend is related to different mineral composition, grain size and typical sheet fractures typically prevailing in the texture of gneiss. Spatial pattern of physical properties shows that high specific gravity of granite coincides only with low porosity and absorption ratio in all provinces except Cheolla province, and high specific gravity of gneiss coincides with low porosity and absorption ratio only in Cheolla and Gandwon provinces.

  • The use of recycled aggregate, even for low-performance concrete, has been very limited because recycled aggregate, which contains a large amount of old mortar, is very low in quality. To produce a high-quality recycled aggregate, removing the paste that adheres to the recycled aggregate is very important. We have conducted research on a complex abrasion method, which removes the component of cement paste from recycled fine aggregate by using both a low-speed wet abrasion crusher as a mechanical process and neutralization as chemical processes, and well as research on the optimal manufacturing condition of recycled fine aggregates. Subsequently, we evaluated the quality of recycled fine aggregate manufactured using these methods, and tested the specimen made by this aggregate. As a result, it was found that recycled fine aggregates produced by considering the aforementioned optimal abrasion condition with the use of sulfuric acid as reactant showed excellent quality, recording a dry density of 2.4 and an absorption ratio of 2.94. Furthermore, it was discovered that gypsum, which is a reaction product occurring in the process, did not significantly affect the quality of aggregates. Furthermore, the test of mortar using this aggregate, when gypsum was included as a reaction product, showed no obvious retarding effect. However, the test sample containing gypsum recorded a long-term strength of 25.7MPa, whereas the test sample that did not contain gypsum posted a long-term strength of 29.4MPa. Thus, it is thought to be necessary to conduct additional research into the soundness and durability because it showed a clear reduction of strength.

  • Recently, interest grew on the quality of aggregates following the diminution of primary resources from river and the growing construction demand which exhausted high-quality sand sources around large cities and incited the use of low grade aggregates like shore sand and sea sand that can be supplied in natural state. Moreover, the most sensitive aspect highlighted by the unstability of aggregate supply is the quality. The extreme insufficiency of quality criteria about the materials currently used as substitute aggregates and about concrete mixed with such materials is also critical. This study investigated influence of qualities of concrete which is using mixed crushed sand and natural sand

  • Recently, the use of selective crushed aggregates is increasing due to the supply and demand shortage of aggregates. In the case of selective crushed aggregates, aggregates are produced using soil, rocks, etc., mainly generated at construction sites as raw materials. As a result, the quality of the raw material may not be uniform and may contain a large amount of soil. In the case of using such a bad aggregate shortens the life of the structure, there is a fear that adversely affect the overall performance, such as the strength and durability of the concrete. Therefore, this study analyzes the effect of aggregate soil on mortar in the low-strength mortar and ultimately proposes the regulation value of clay content in the soil content of crushed aggregates such as crushed aggregates.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the properties of fresh concrete with recycled fine aggregates. Three different kinds of fine aggregate with natural, high and low quality recycled aggregates were prepared. The concrete mixtures were produced with test parameters of replacement ratio of recycled fine aggregate. The properties of the fresh concrete were measured by means of slump and air content according to elapsed time. Quality control method to maintain the constant total mixing water for recycled aggregate concrete was suggested. The all concrete mixtures were produced with approximately the same slump on the job site after an hour. Test results indicated that compressive strength of the concrete mixtures with constant slump is not affected by the replacement ratio of recycled fine aggregate. Therefore, the practical way for the quality control of recycled aggregate concrete is to maintain the constant total mixing water.
