  • In enhancing the technologies for the highly efficient and low pollution vehicles, the emitted sound by applying those techniques is degraded, which needs further vibro-acoustic tuning. The point of concern is usually related to the sound quality, and, sometimes, to the direct connection with the pedestrian safety. In this talk, a brief discussion is given to the sound quality issues on the start-stop function, cylinder-on-demand, engine down-sizing, turbo-chargers, road noise, and artificial warning sound.

  • Electroluminescent Display(ELD) will be the innovative ideas to replace existed electricity illumination systems that consider to under effectiveness and environmental pollution generators in the commercial caves because ELD has less heat and low electricity consumption by the new illumination materials. Characteristics of the ELD are as following: it is a proper matter for the small merchandise ads due to its thickness is only below 3oo micoron, electricity consumption of ELD is less (1/3) than LED, ELD that is a whole face illumination system is much brighter than LED that is a dot illumination system, ELD is longer life than others due to its less light generation systems, ELD is any problems to bend, and it is a best device to use a light board ads. ELD has advantages on conservation of cave biosystems and reduce pollution when ELD is installed in touring spots and emergency corridors of weak illuminated cave internal areas by less heating and low electricity consumption using the indirect illumination of the ELD. Therefore when the high technologic ELD is installed in the commercial caves in Korea, it will be innovating cave environmental systems, saving budgets, and increasing tours.

  • The mathematical models of hydrodynamic force and moment acting on a ship at low speed range should be established differently from the ones at nominal cruising speed range since a ship moves with large drift angle or rotates in a stationary position. We modified widely used Yoshimura's cross flow model in order to apply the system identification method to estimate parameters in the model. The apparatus and the procedure of free running model test were suggested so that the parameters in the model be estimated. The validity of our proposing modified model and test procedure was confirmed by comparison with the results of simulated model test.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of epiphytic lichens that growing near the thermoelectric power plant to obtain a basic data for air environmental evaluation around the power plant. The study areas were all 12 places including ten sites near the power plant and two sites for control. All the number of lichens appeared in this study areas were 27 species. It showed to 4∼6 species within 4㎞ from the power plant, and coverage also was low. As receding from the power plant, both the number of species and overage increased. Parmelia tinctorum sensitive to air pollution did not appear within 4㎞ from the power plant, and it was regarded as the sensitive kind to air pollution. Lepraria sp.(13.40%), Parmelia austrosinensis (13.40%), and Dirinaria applanaita (13.40%) were distributed in all sites, and it could infer that they had tolerance to air pollution. The IAP (Index of Atmosphere Purity) values in Sadungdong Apsan, Seksangeabal and the Power plant were four times as low as those in Mt, Yeonwha, and it could infer that the air in those areas was not good. It was high IAP values as being distant from the power plant.

  • The vertical profiles of the extinction coefficient, the backscatter coefficient, and the lidar ratio (i.e., extinction-to-backscattering ratio) for Asian dust and pollution aerosols are determined from Raman (inelastic) and elastic backscatter signals. The values of lidar ratios during two polluted days is found between 52 and 82 sr (July 22, 2009) and 40~60 sr (July 31, 2009) at 52 nm, with relatively low value of particle depolarization ratio (<5%) and high value of sun photometer-derived Angstrom exponent (> 1.2). However, lidar ratios between 25 and 40 sr are found during two Asian dust periods (October 20, 2009 and March 15, 2010), with 10~20% of particle depolarization ratio and the relatively low value of sun photometer-derived Angstrom exponent (< 0.39). The lidar ratio, particle depolarization ratio and color ratio are useful optical parameter to distinguish non-spherical coarse dust and spherical fine pollution aerosols. The comparison of aerosol extinction profiles determined from inelastic-backscatter signals by the Raman method and from elastic-backscatter signals by using the Fernald method with constant value of lidar ratio (50 sr) have shown that reliable aerosol extinction coefficients cannot be determined from elastic-backscatter signals alone, because the lidar ratio varies with aerosol types. A combined Raman and elastic backscatter lidar system can provide reliable information about the aerosol extinction profile and the aerosol lidar ratio.
