  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of puffed and fermented red ginseng on blood glucose-related biomarkers in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Male Sprague-Dawley diabetic rats were orally injected with 0.85% NaCL as a diabetic control (DC), 300 mg/kg general red ginseng (RG), 300 mg/kg puffing red ginseng fermented by mixed strain culture of $Bifidobacterium$ $breve$ and $Lactobacillus$ $delbrueckii$ (BL), and 300 mg/kg puffing red ginseng fermented by $Enterococcus$ $faecalis$ (EF) for 5 weeks. The blood glucose level of group BL was significantly lower maintained than in groups DC and RG for the experimental period (p<0.05). It was also significantly lower than in groups DC, RG, and EF at the 5th week (p<0.05). In the oral glucose tolerance test, the blood glucose of group BL was maintained the lowest level (p<0.05), and the area under the blood glucose curve (AUC) was also significantly lower in group BL than in group DC (p<0.05). The fasting blood glucose and insulin levels after the experiment were significantly low in group BL (p<0.05), and the HOMA-IR was more significantly low in groups BL and EF than in group DC (p<0.05). Also, the HbA1c content of group BL was significantly low than in groups DC and RG (p<0.05). The serum TC level was significantly decreased in groups RG, BL, and EF than in group DC (p<0.05), and the LDL-C content was significantly low in group BL than in group DC (p<0.05). From the findings, it was shown that the puffed and fermented red ginseng made using a mixed strain culture of $B.$ $breve$ and $L.$ $delbrueckii$ could improve blood glucose-related biomarkers.

  • Hybridoma cells were adapted in media containing up to 80 mM $K^+$. The adapted cells obtained tolerance at high osmotic pressure and low pH. The adapted cells showed a maximum viable cell density of $1.1{\times}10^6$ cells/ml when a batch culture was progressed in a nutrient-fortified medium with Erlenmeyer flask at 450 $mOsm/kgH_2O,$ as compared to $4.8{\times}10^5$ cells/ml for non-adapted cells grown under the same conditions. The adapted cells also showed a maximum viable cell density of $7.8{\times}10^5$ cells/ml with the same method at initial pH 7.0 as compared to $5.3{\times}10^5$ cells/ml for non-adapted cells. Adaptation of animal cells at high $K^+$ levels may therefore lead to an improvement of their performance at limited conditions.

  • The experiment was carried out to examine the effect of culture media and seawater on growth and mineral concentrations in Glasswort (Salicornia herbacea). Glassworts were grown in a greenhouse with 0, 10, 30 and 90% seawater and with or without nutrient media. The salinity tolerance affected on shoot height and Na, K and Ca concentrations significantly. The shoot height was increased with 10 and 30% seawater concentrations. At the higher seawater concentrations, more Na accumulated in a shoot was obserbed. The application of seawater concentration was effective on increasing Na, Mg, and Fe, concentrations and green leaf area rate and on decreasing K concentration. K/Na ratio of shoot was decreased at high seawater concentration, whereas Na concentrations was lowered at a low seawater concentrations. The mineral concentrations were changed according to the growing season. Na, K and Mg were high in June and Ca and P in September, respectively.

  • This study investigated quality changes and functions of low-molecular soymilk according to hydrolysis time (30, 60, and 90 minutes). According to the results, pH of hydrolyzed groups were lower than that of the control group but it did not show a large difference according to hydrolysis time while sugar content was reduced with longer hydrolysis time. Although degree of hydrolysis and calcium tolerance increased with longer hydrolysis time, there was not a significant difference according to the time. Among free sugars, contents of glucose and fructose grew while those of sucrose and maltose tended to decline with time. Total free sugar content was the largest with 60 minutes of hydrolysis time recording 827.65 mg%. Total amino acid content was also the highest with hydrolyzed for 60 minutes recording 85.80 mg% and those of all hydrolyzed groups were higher than that of the control group. In addition, the content of essential amino acid increased significantly with time. In SDS-PAGE, checked for the tendency of becoming low molecules, molecular weights were found to be 33 kDa or less kDa in all hydrolyzed groups. When functional characteristics of soymilk such as electron donating, superoxide radical scavenging and ACE inhibitory activities were compared, longer hydrolysis time led to higher activities. From these results, overall quality of low molecular soymilk was superior when hydrolyzed for 60 minutes and the findings should be viable in the development of various types of functionally strengthened low-molecular soymilk in the future.

  • The objective of this study was to elucidate the tolerance of woody plants to simulated acid rain in relation to mycorrhizal inoculation. Germinating seedlings of Robinia pseudoacacia were planted in 1I pots with autoclaved soil mixture of vermiculite, sand and nursery soil at 1:1:1 ratio. Each pot was inoculated with both crushed root nodules from a wild tree of the same species and commercial arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculum of Glomus intraradices at the time of planting the seedlings. Simulated acid rains at pH 2.6, 3.6, 4.6, and 5.6 were made by mixing sulfuric acid and nitric acid at 3: 1 ratio. Each pot received nutrient solution without N and P, and was also supplied with 180 ml of the one pH level of the acid rains once a week for 50 days. The plants were grown in the green house. At the end of experimental period, plants were harvested to determine contents of chlorophyll, mineral nutrients and net photosynthesis in the tissues, dry weight of the plants, and mycorrhizal infection in the roots. Mycorrhizal infection rate was significantly reduced only at pH 2.6, which meant vitality of G intraradices was inhibited at extremely low pH. Height growth, dry weight production, nodule production and chlorophyll content were increased by mycorrhizal infection in all the pH levels except pH 3.6. Particularly, mycorrhizal inoculation increased root nodule production by 85% in pH 5.6 and 45% in 4.6 treatments. But the stimulatory effect of mycorrhizal inoculation on nodule production was reduced at pH 3.6 and 2.6. Net photosynthesis was increased by mycorrhizal infection in all the pH levels. The phosphorus(P) content in the tissues was increased by 43% in average by mycorrhizal inoculation, which was statistically significant except in pH 2.6. It was concluded that mycorrhizal inoculation of Robinia pseudoacacia would enhance growth and resistance of the plants to acid rain by improving the photosynthesis, phosphorus nutrition, and more nodule production.

  • Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multifactorial disease characterized by impaired glucose tolerance/diabetes, obesity, high triglyceride levels, low HDL levels, and hypertension. In this study we evaluate the relationship between tumor size and grade, and presence of the metabolic syndrome in patients with renal cell carcinoma. Materials and Methods: Between 2007-2013, radical nephrectomy was performed for 310 patients with renal tumors in our clinic and those with pathology reported renal cell carcinoma were enrolled and divided into two groups, with and without metabolic syndrome diagnosed on the basis of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. The relationship between tumor size and grade of the two groups (Fuhrman nuclear degree) was evaluated statistically. Results: The metabolic syndrome was found in 70 patients, with a mean age of 65.5 (40-87), as compared to 58.8 (31-84) years in the non-metabolic syndrome group. Tumor size over 7 cm was found in 54% and 33%, respectively, and tumor grade over Fuhrman 3 in 56% and 32% of patients. Patients with metabolic syndrome had significantly higher tumor size and grade (p<0.05). In the presence of hypertension, diabetes and high triglyceride levels, significant assocations were again observed (p<0.05). Tumor size and degree also increased with increasing body mass index but this was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusions: Renal cancer is more aggressive in patients with metabolic syndrome. Lifestyle and risk factors were revealed to be significant influences in renal cancer patients.

  • A Star and Pancake graph also have such a good property of a hypercube and have a low network cost than the hypercube. A Macro-star graph which has the star graph as a basic module has the node symmetry, the maximum fault tolerance, and the hierarchical decomposition property. And, it is an interconnection network which improves the network cost against the Star graph. In this paper, we propose a method to embed between Star graph, Pancake graph, and Macro-star graph using the edge definition of graphs. We prove that the Star graph $S_n$ can be embedded into Pancake graph $P_n$ with dilation 4, and Macro-star graph MS(2,n) can be embedded into Pancake graph $P_{2n+1}$ with dilation 4. Also, we have a result that the embedding cost, a Pancake graph can be embedded into Star and Macro-star graph, is O(n).

  • Both MgO and $Sc_2O_3$ are shown to provide low interface state densities (in the $10^{11}{\;}eV^{-1}{\;}cm{\;}^{-2}$ range)on n-and p-GaN, making them useful for gate dielectrics for metal-oxide semiconductor(MOS) devices and also as surface passivation layers to mitigate current collapse in GaN/AlGaN high electron mobility transistors(HEMTs).Clear evidence of inversion has been demonstrated in gate-controlled MOS p-GaN diodes using both types of oxide. Charge pumping measurements on diodes undergoing a high temperature implant activation anneal show a total surface state density of $~3{\;}{\times}{\;}10^{12}{\;}cm^{-2}$. On HEMT structures, both oxides provide effective passivation of surface states and these devices show improved output power. The MgO/GaN structures are also found to be quite radiation-resistant, making them attractive for satellite and terrestrial communication systems requiring a high tolerance to high energy(40MeV) protons.

  • Objective: To determine clinical efficacy, safety and prognostic factors of pemetrexed plus platinum as first-line treatment in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Materials and Methods: Clinical characteristics, short-term efficacy, survival and adverse reactions of 47 advanced non-squamous NSCLC patients who had received pemetrexed plus platinum as first-line treatment in Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital from January 2009 to June 2011 were retrospectively analyzed. The Chi-squared test was applied to statistically analyze the overall response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR) and toxicity reactions in both groups, while survival data wereanalyzed by Kaplan-Meier and logrank methods, and the COX proportional hazards model was adopted for a series of multi-factor analyses. Results: Only two patients were lost to follow-up. The ORR, DCR, medium progression-free survival time (PFS) and medium overall survival (OS) were 31.9%, 74.5%, 5 months and 15.2 months, while 1- and 2-year survival rates were 63.8% (30/47) and 19.2% (9/47), respectively. Single-factor analysis showed that tumor pathological patterns and efficacy were in association with medium PFS (P<0.05), whereas tumor pathological patterns, smoking history and efficacy were closely connected with medium OS (P<0.05). Multi-factor analyses demonstrated that pathological patterns and efficacy were independent factors influencing OS (P<0.05). The rate of toxicity reactions in degree III/IV was low, including hematologic toxicity marked by decline in white blood cell count and decrease in the platelet count (PLT), and non-hematologic toxicity manifested by gastrointestinal reactions, such as nausea and vomiting. Conclusions: Pemetrexed plus platinum as first-line treatment has excellent efficacy and slight adverse reactions with favorable drug-tolerance in patients with advanced non-squamous NSCLC.
