  • This study presents physiological rates of respiration and excretion, clearance rate, and assimilation efficiency of the ark shell Scapharca broughtonii, determined during 2007 from specimens collected in Gamak Bay on the south coast of Korea. Physiological parameters were measured monthly under static, laboratory controlled conditions with ambient conditions, and measurements were performed seasonally in order to estimate scope for growth and its probable sources of variation. Temperature directly influenced respiration and excretion. Clearance rates showed a tendency to be low during May-August, which is a period of gametogenesis. Assimilation efficiency was not significantly different seasonally and was independent of the concentration of chlorophyll a. The scope for growth was negative during high-temperature months (July-August), reflecting the high temperature and low clearance rate, and had its highest positive values during spring and autumn. The energy budget or growth potential of bivalves has been applied to other economically important species. Data on the physiological parameters and scope for growth of S. broughtonii obtained in this study will be used to assess the carrying capacity for ark shell cultivation.

  • SiN and SiCN film production using plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD) is investigated in this study. A developed high-power and high-density multiple inductively coupled plasma (multi-ICP) source is used for a low temperature PE-ALD process. High plasma density and good uniformity are obtained by high power $N_2$ plasma discharge. Silicon nitride films are deposited on a 300-mm wafer using the PE-ALD method at low temperature. To analyze the quality of the SiN and SiCN films, the wet etch rate, refractive index, and growth rate of the thin films are measured. Experiments are performed by changing the applied power and the process temperature ($300-500^{\circ}C$).

  • We try to use isopropanol which has low boiling point to prepare ZnO thin films at low temperature. ZnO thin films were prepared by sol-gel spin-coating method using zinc acetate dehydrate-isopropanol-monoethanolamine (MEA) solution. The c-axis preferred orientation and optical properties of ZnO films with preheating temperature have been investigated. ZnO thin films were preheated at 200 to $300^{\circ}C$ with an interval of $25^{\circ}C$ and post-heated at $650^{\circ}C$. The ZnO film preheated at $275^{\circ}C$ and post-heated at $650^{\circ}C$ was highly oriented along c-axis (002) plane, and the surface with homogeneous and dense microstructures was formed having nano-sized grains. The optical transmittance was above 90 % in the visible range and exhibited absorption edges at 368 nm wavelength.

  • Silicon oxide films were grown on single-crystal silicon substrates at low temperatures (25~205$^{\circ}C$) in a low pressure electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) oxygen plasma. The growth rate of the silicon oxide film increased as the temperature increased or the pressure decreased. Also, the thickness of the silicon oxide film increased at negative bias voltage, but not changed at positive bias voltage. The growth law of the silicon oxide film was approximated to the parabolic form. Capacitance-voltage (C-V) and current density-electric field (J-E) characteristics were studied using Al/SiO2/p-Si MOS structures. For a 10.2 nm thick silicon oxide film, the leakage current density at the electric field of 1 MVcm-1 was less than 1.0$\times$10-8Acm-2 and the breakdown field was higher than 10 MVcm-1. The flat band voltage of Al/SiO2/p-Si MOS capacitor was varied in the range of -2~-3 V and the effective dielectric constant was 3.85. These results indicate that high quality oxide films with properties that are similar to those of thermal oxide film can be fastly grown at low temperature using the ECR oxygen plasma.

  • Miscanthus sinensis Andersson (Poaceae) cultivars exhibit excellent visual appeal as ornamental grasses and adapt well to diverse environmental conditions. This study focused on assessing the growth response and landscape durability of seven popular Miscanthus cultivars ('Gold Breeze', 'Strictus', 'Morning Light', 'Variegatus', 'Gracillimus', 'Kleine Fontäne', 'Common') under drought, rainfall and low temperature condition. The test cultivars were transplanted and cultivated on research plots in 2013, with data collected from June 2017 to February 2018. Plant materials were categorized into three types based on the amount of the water lost; group I ('Kleine Fontäne', 'Variegatus', 'Strictus'), experiencing the most significant water loss; group II ('Common', 'Gracillimus'); and group III ('Gold Breeze', 'Morning Light') where the least water loss occurred. The drought resistance index (DRI) remained low as water shortage conditions persisted. The lodged angle underwent more pronounced changes in reproductive growth stage than in vegetative growth stage, notably decreasing after heading. Discoloration patterns were classified into two types: group I ('Common', 'Gold Breeze', 'Kleine Fontäne', 'Strictus') and group II ('Gracillimus', 'Morning Light', 'Variegatus') based on the periods of peak duration.

  • For successful microalgal biodiesel production, the strain should be selected carefully. Fast growth rate and high fatty acid contents are desired traits for algal biodiesel production. In ocean cultivation of microalgae, seawater temperature slowly changes over seasons, and rotating algal strains in accordance with their optimal temperature could improve overall productivity. Additionally, use of indigenous strain is preferred to alleviate potential impacts on the environment. In this study, five strains of Tetraselmis sp. from nearshore of Youngheung Island, Incheon, Korea, were isolated during winter and characterized for their growth patterns and fatty acid compositions in the low temperatures ($5-15^{\circ}C$). The five strains showed various characteristics in optimal growth temperature, fatty acid contents, and compositions. Compared with a strain of Tetraselmis sp., isolated from Ganghwa island in a previous study, a rapid-growing strain with 237% higher biomass productivity and an oleaginous strain with twice higher fatty acid contents at $10^{\circ}C$ were isolated. The oleaginous Tetraselmis strain showed the highest fatty acid productivity among the strains, having 438% higher productivity than the previous strain. Using the new isolates in the seasons with low seawater temperature would improve microalgal fatty acid productivity in ocean cultivation.

  • In the present work we consider morphological structure of the faces of BGO crystals grown by Czochralski technique under the conditions of low temperature gradient (0.1~1 deg/cm) and interconnection between the morphological features of faces at the crystallization front and the formation of defects within the crystal volume. It is demonstrated that the {112} faces retain stability while the growing surface deviates from the crystallographic (112) plane up to 1 degree. At larger deviation, the region of the stable facet growth passes either to the region of macrosteps or to the region of normal growth. depending on conditions.

  • An improvement in the optical and structural properties of p-GaN was obtained by using antimony (Sb) as a surfactant during p-GaN growth. Two different growth temperatures of p-GaN such as $1030^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ were considered. Keeping the growth conditions for p-GaN constant, Sb was introduced during p-GaN growth while varying the [Sb]/([Ga]+[Mg]) flow ratio. [Sb]/([Ga]+[Mg]) flow ratio will be denoted as SGM ratio for convenience. SGM ratio of 0, 0.015 and 0.03% were considered for high temperature p-GaN growth. SGM ratio of 0, 0.005, 0.01 and 0.02% were considered for low temperature p-GaN growth. The analysis results suggest that using the optimum SGM ratio during p-GaN growth greatly improves the optical and structural properties of the p-GaN.

  • The effects of environmental factors on the growth of Enteromorpha compressa germlings from Daeyulri (34$^{\circ}$36'N; 127$^{\circ}$47'E), the southern cost of Korea were examined in laboratory culture through combinations of irradiance and salinity and temperature and salinity. They showed a maximum growth rate at 125 $\mu$E.m-2.s-1 and 32$\textperthousand$ of irradiance and salinity combination, and at 15$^{\circ}C$ and 32% of temperature and salinity combination. Optimal parameters for the growth of germlings were 15$^{\circ}C$, 125 $\mu$E.m-2s-1 and 32$\textperthousand$. The germlings of E. compressa were survived in a wide range of irradiance, temperature and salinity levels, even though they had relatively low irradiance optimum. In the field E. compressa occurred commonly during autumn and spring seasons and disappeared in summer, except for particular habitats. This may be caused by the salinity and water temperature of this area rarely drop below 26$\textperthousand$ and 8$^{\circ}C$ during winter. A broad tolerance to environmental and rapid growth of germlings made them a wide geographical distribution over the world and a survival in both the upper and lower intertidal zones.

  • The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industries is requiring high strength of components. Therefore this requirement is accomplished as the process of shot-peening method that the compressive residual stress is made on the metal surface as one of various improvement methods. Special research is, therefore, needed about compressive residual stress on the metal surface in the process of shot-peening method. Therefore, in this paper the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in environmental condition(temperature) and mechanical condition(shot velocity, stress ratio) was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. By using the methods mentioned above, the following conclusions have been drawn. (1) The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the shot-peened material was lower than that of the un-peened one. In high temperature range. fatigue crack growth rate decreased with increasing temperature range, while fatigue crack growth rate increased by decreasing temperature in low temperature. (2) Fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot-peened material than in the un-peened material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the shot-peen processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation.
