  • In the context of wireless sensor networks, one of major issues is energy conservation. For low power communication, by utilizing our experimental results for the relation between clock drift and synchronization interval, we designed a new protocol which can support a wide range of duty cycles for applications with very low traffic rate and insensitive delay. The transmission (TX) node in the protocol synchronizes with the reception (RX) node very before transmitting a packet, and it can adaptively estimate the synchronization error size according to the synchronization interval from minutes to hours. We conducted simulations and a testbed implementation to show the efficacy of the proposed protocol. We found that our protocol substantially outperforms other state-of-the-art protocols, resulting in order-of-magnitude increase in network lifetime over a variety of duty cycles.

  • This paper proposes a MAC protocol for sensor networks such as disaster detection system which generate the non-periodic packet. B-MAC has been used to solve delay problem for sensor networks, however, the power loss occurs due to excessive preamble and over-hearing. In contrast, S-MAC has a number of drawbacks in power consumption due to synchronization. In this paper, we propose H-MAC and analyze its performance which has improved power consumption compared to S-MAC and overhead and over-hearing compared to B-MAC.

  • Low power listening (LPL) MAC protocols based on duty-cycling mechanism have been studied extensively to achieve ultra low energy consumption in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Especially, recent ACK-based LPL schemes such as X-MAC employ strobe preambles and an early ACK, and show fair performances in communications and energy efficiencies. However, the state-of-the-art ACK-based LPL scheme still suffers from collision problems due to the protocol incompleteness. These collision effects are not trivial and make WSNs unstable, aggravate energy consumptions. In this paper, we propose two novel schemes; (i) ${\tau}$-duration CCA to mitigate the collision problem in ACK-based LPL MAC protocols. (ii) Short Preamble Counter (SPC) to conserve more energy by reducing unnecessary overhearing. We demonstrate the performance improvement of our scheme via a mathematical analysis and real-time experiments. Both analysis and experimental results confirm that our proposed scheme saves energy by up to 36% compared to the naive ACK-based LPL MAC protocol thanks to ${\tau}$-duration CCA and SPC.

  • The geomagnetic sensor nodes are usually designed with wireless communication and battery for easy installation on the road without cable connection and wiring. To minimize operation cost of a system, it is important to prolong the battery lifetime of the geomagnetic sensors installed on the road. In this paper, we propose a low-power TDMA MAC protocol that reduces energy consumption while guaranteeing the real-time vehicle detection information in the vehicle detection system. The performance evaluations are conducted through a real testbed of a vehicle detection system, and it proves that the proposed low-power protocols provides 5 year lifetime by improving energy efficiency up to about 62%.

  • Since wireless sensor networks consist of nodes with the constrained battery, energy efficient MAC operation is one of the important issues. Low duty cycle operation is critical to conserve energy in wireless sensor network MAC protocol. Some paper proposed a new approach to low power listening, which employs a short preamble to further reduce energy consumption and to reduce latency. But short preamble suffers from unfair channel access problem since there was no consideration for contention between transmission nodes. Preamble counting proposes a solution to each of these problems by employing node selection information. Simulation results show that the preamble counting provides an improved energy efficiency and fairness of packet delivery.

  • 3GPP(Third Generation Partnership Project) LTE system that is the next step forward in cellular 3G services address the issues related to power saving at LTE base station. This is because that most of the energy in a typical telecommunication network is consumed by the wireless network's base station site. Power saving at LTE base station fall in with low-carbon green technology. This thesis proposes a power saving MAC protocol for LTE base station which utilizes different graded DRX/DTX(Discontinuous. Reception/Transmission). Considering traffic type in UE, proposed MAC protocol controls adaptive DRX/DTX cycle. The proposed method is more improve power saving performance than another method which is unchanged DRX/DTX by conditions. In this thesis, I propose an power saving MAC protocol in an environment where LTE base station are communicated with UE and prove improvement in performance through simulations.

  • In this paper, we perform analysis of the performance of low-power communication technology, IEEE 802.15.4 MAC (Media Access Control) protocol used in internet of things. Wide variety of devices in internet of things generate different kinds of traffic characteristics and heterogeneous traffic environment is therefore considered in contrast to existing works. With the help of the Markov chain the performance of the protocol is derived as a function of the MAC parameters and based on the results a framework to determine energy-efficient optimal MAC parameters for applications in real time is proposed. Proposed method is shown to be more efficient in terms of energy consumption through performance comparison over application scenarios compared to operation with fixing MAC parameters, and its practicability on small devices with limited computing power is verified through evaluating the accuracy and speed of the proposed framework.

  • In WBAN environment, it is very important to achieve energy efficiency of master and nodes, At the same time, a master also plays an important role in collecting data from nodes and controlling the nodes. By maintaining a master properly, any kinds of situation can be handled. Therefore, low power MAC protocol between a master and a node is highly required appropriately. We propose an improved MAC protocol by simply changing the frame structure of WBAN system. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme attains a lot of saving of energy consumption of master and each node compared with IEEE 802.15.6 and conventional schemes.

  • We believe that existing wire solutions such as HomePNA2.0 using phone lines and HomePlug using power line and wireless solution such as HomeRF are the most promising solutions, because of its cost-effectiveness. However, MAC protocols of these solutions provide only Class of Service(CoS) using priority mechanism like HomePNA and HomePlug or consider only voice among real-time traffics like HomeRF. For these reasons, we perceive the needs of the new MAC protocol which is no new wire solution and provides guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) for not only voice but also video and audio. In light of this, we present the design and software implementation of a new MAC protocol for Home Networks. Our evaluation results of software implementation verify that proposed MAC protocol can provide low delay, low loss, and low jitter to real-time traffic by reserving bandwidth.
