  • The fluorine doped silicon oxide (SiOF) intermetal dielectric (IMD) films havc been of interest due to their lower dielectric constant and compatibility with existing process tools. However, instability issues related to hond and increasing dielectric constant due to water absorption when the SiOF film was exposured to atmospheric ambient. Therefore, the purpose nf this research is to study the effect of post oxygen plasma treatment on the resistance of nioisture absorption and reliability of SiOF film. Improvement of moisture ahsorption resistance of SiOF film is due to the forming of thin $SiO_2$ layer at the SiOF film surface. It is thought that the main effect of the improvement of moisture absorption resistance was densification of the top layer and reduction in the numher of Si-F honds that tend to associate with OH honds. However, the dielectric constant was inucased when plasma treatment time is above 5 min. In this study, therefore, it is thought that the proper plasma treatment time is 3 min when plasma treatment condition is 700 W of microwave power, 3 mTorr of process pressure and $300^{\circ}C$ of substrate temperature.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Natural products or active components with a protective effect against oxidative stress have attracted significant attention for prevention and treatment of degenerative disease. Oligonol is a low molecular weight polyphenol containing catechin-type monomers and oligomers derived from Litchi chinensis Sonn. We investigated the protective effect and its related mechanism of oligonol against oxidative stress. MATERIALS/METHODS: Oxidative stress in C6 glial cells was induced by hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and the protective effects of oligonol on cell viability, nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) synthesis, and mRNA expression related to oxidative stress were determined. RESULTS: Treatment with oligonol inhibited NO and ROS formation under cellular oxidative stress in C6 glial cells. In addition, it recovered cell viability in a dose dependent-manner. Treatment with oligonol also resulted in down-regulated mRNA expression related to oxidative stress, nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-${\kappa}B$) p65, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), compared with the control group treated with $H_2O_2$. In particular, expression of NF-${\kappa}B$ p65, COX-2, and iNOS was effectively reduced to the normal level by treatment with $10{\mu}g/mL$ and $25{\mu}g/mL$ of oligonol. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that oligonol has protective activity against oxidative stress-induced inflammation. Oligonol might be a promising agent for treatment of degenerative diseases through inhibition of ROS formation and NF-${\kappa}B$ pathway gene expression.

  • To improve the polarization property of cathodes, which is the main factor limiting the performance of protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs), $K_2NiF_4-type$ $Pr_2NiO_{4+{\delta}}$, which is expected to exhibit a triple conducting property (proton, oxygen ion, and hole conductions) was applied to PCFCs and its properties were investigated. Low-temperature microwave heat-treatment was used to achieve both sufficient interface adhesion between the electrolyte and the cathode layers and suppression of the secondary phase formation due to migration of elements such as barium and cerium. Through this fabrication method, a high performance of $0.82W{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ and low ohmic resistance of $0.06{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ were obtained in an $Ni-BaCe_{0.55}Zr_{0.3}Y_{0.15}O_{3-{\delta}}$ | $BaCe_{0.55}Zr_{0.3}Y_{0.15}O_{3-{\delta}}$ | $Pr_2NiO_{4+{\delta}}$ single cell at $650^{\circ}C$. This result verifies that the $K_2NiF_{4+{\delta}}-type$ cathode shows good chemical compatibility which, in turn, will make it a potent candidate as a PCFC cathode.

  • Antioxidants have been added to cryoprotectant or in vitro culture medium for sperm to reduce the detrimental damage, such as reactive oxygen species. However, curcumin, an antioxidant, shows dual effect on the viability and progressive motility of bovine sperm exposed to hydrogen peroxide. Low concentration of curcumin increases sperm viability and progressive motility, whereas high concentration of curcumin reduces them. This study was performed to identify whether TREK-1 channel is related to low sperm viability and motility induced by high concentration of curcumin. Curcumin reduced TREK-1 channel activity in a dose-dependent manner. TREK-1 channel was expressed in sperm obtained from Korean native bull. Treatment with TREK-1 channel blockers, such as curcumin, fluoxetine, $GdCl_3$, and spadin, significantly reduced sperm viability and motility (p < 0.05). However, TREK-1 channel activators showed different effect; linoleic acid showed an increase in sperm viability and motility, and wogonin did not affect them. These results show that TREK-1 channel is involved in the regulation of sperm viability and motility. In particular, high concentration of curcumin might reduce sperm viability and progressive motility of Korean native bull through blockage of TREK-1 channel.

  • One of the physiological disease, sudden wiliting of Yushin variety suggested that low sunlight, excessive nitrogen application, and highly reduced soil condions either singly or combined, might be possible causes of the disorder. Some visual symptom of sudden wilting are discoloration of leaves, development of nodal roots above the soil surface, total root rot, and lodging. Those observations led to the hypothesis that suffocation of root tissues was a direct cause of the wilting. The oxygen transport characteristics of Yushin, IR262 and Tongil were examined by two methods. First, Soil-cultured plants of the three varieties were subjected to paraffin treatment to decrease the oxygen supply from the air to root tissues through the soil-water system, liquid paraffin was applied to the water surface in the pots at panicle formation stage. In this experiment, sudden wilting was observed of Yushin and IR262 at about a week after the treatment, but Tongil remained green and healthy. Wilting-resistant variety Tongil had higher oxygen release, whereas the susceptible Yushin and IR262 had lower oxygen release. Second, the number and size of the air spaces in each internode were investigated in the 5th internode from the top, all three varieties have a similar number of air spaces, although the air spaces of Thongil were larger. In the 4th internode, Tongil had plenty air spaces, Yushin and one of the Yushin's parents IR262 had scanty or none. The observations indicated that the ability of Yushin and IR262 for oxygen transport is very limited compared with that of Tongil. The limited oxygen supply due to poor development of air space in internode of rice plants may cause suffocation of root tissues, weaken metabolic activity of the tissues, and induce root rot, subsequently inducing sudden wilting and lodging under unfavorable weather, soil and cultural conditions.

  • The reaction characteristics of Ni/CeO2-X which is highly efficient at a low temperature was investigated for an application to carbon dioxide methanation process. The CeO2-X support was obtained by the heat treatment of Ce(NO3)3 at 400 ℃ and the catalyst was prepared by impregnation process. The operating parameters of the experiment were the internal pressure of the reactor, the composition of oxygen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide in the inlet gas and the reaction temperature. When Ni/CeO2-X was used for the carbon dioxide methanation reaction, the CO2 conversion rate increased by more than 25% as the pressure increased from 1 to 3 bar. The increase was large at a low reaction temperature. When both oxygen and methane were in the inlet gas, the CO2 conversion rate of the catalyst decreased by up to 16 and 4%, respectively. As the concentration of oxygen and methane increased, the reduction rate of the CO2 conversion rate tended to increase. In addition, the hydrogen sulfide in the inlet gas reduced the CO2 conversion rate by up to 7% and caused catalyst deactivation. The results of this study will be useful as basic data for the carbon dioxide methanation process.

  • This study is about the implementation of low energy sewage management technology through effective control of blower which consumes the most energy in sewage treatment. In calculating the amount of oxygen required for microorganisms, unlike the existing method using the operating index in the bioreactor or TMS data in the discharge port, the CODcr and NH4+-N concentration changes in sewage flowing into the sewage treatment plant were detected in advance before entering the bioreactor and the amount of air was controlled based on this. The pre-sensing was found to have a high correlation compared with conventional products. As a result of blower control, it was possible to save about 9.9% energy more than the manual control. Consequently, this study suggested the possibility of blower's real-time control combined with pre-sensing technology. Also, it is expected that the low energy sewage treatment can be applied to sewage treatment facilities dependent on operation by manpower, and it will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

  • This study was conducted to examine whether or not oligonol, a low molecular weight polyphenol derived from lychee fruit, has an ameliorative effect on diabetes-induced oxidative stress-related hepatic damage in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Oligonol (10 or 20 mg/kg body weight; O10 or O20, respectively) was orally administered every day for 10 days to STZ-induced diabetic rats, and its effects were compared to vehicle-treated diabetic (Veh) and non-diabetic rats. Administration of 20 mg/kg of oligonol significantly decreased liver weight compared with the Veh group (P<0.05). Elevated levels of hepatic glucose, reactive oxygen species, peroxynitrite, and lipid peroxidation were detected in diabetic vehicle rats, whereas oligonol treatment significantly attenuated these levels (P<0.05). In diabetic vehicle rats, hepatic antioxidant enzyme protein levels decreased, whereas oligonol treatment showed significant elevated results. For inflammation-related protein expression, oligonol-treated groups showed insignificant reduction. Oligonol improved expression of proapoptotic protein caspase-3 in the liver of diabetic rats (P<0.05). In conclusion, these results provide important evidence that oligonol exhibits an inhibitory effect on oxidative stress and apoptosis-related protein expression as well as a hepato-protective effect against the development of diabetic complications in STZ-induced type 1 diabetic rats.

  • Low temperature atmospheric pressure plasmas (APPs) have been known to be effective for living cell inactivation in the water [1]. Many earlier research found that pH level of the solution was changed from neutral to acidic after plasma treatment. The importance of the effect of acidity of the solution for cell treatments has already been reported by many experiments. In addition, several studies have demonstrated that the addition of a small amount of oxygen to pure helium results in higher sterilization efficiency of APPs [2]. However, it is not clear yet which species are key factors for the cell treatment. To find key factors, we used GMoo simulation. We elucidate the processes through which pH level in the solution is changed from neutral to acidic after plasma exposure and key components with pH and air variation with using GMoo simulation. First, pH level in a liquid solution is changed by He+ and He(21S) radicals. Second, O3 density decreases as pH level in the solution decreases and air concentration decreases. It can be a method of removing O3 that cause chest pain and damage lung tissue when the density is very high. H2O2, HO2 and NO radicals are found to be key factors for cell inactivation in the solution with pH and air variation.

  • $LiNbO_3$ transistor showed relatively stable characteristic, low interface trap density, and large remanent polarization. This paper reports ferroelectric $LiNbO_3$ thin films grown directly on p-type Si(100) substrates by 13.56 MHz rf magnetron sputtering system for FRAM applications. To take advantage of low temperature requirement for growing films, we deposited $LiNbO_3$ films lower than $300 ^{\circ}C$. RTA(Rapid Thermal Anneal) treatment was performed for as-deposited films in an oxygen atmosphere at $600^{\circ}C$ for 60 sec. We learned from X-ray diffraction that the RTA annealed films were changed from amorphous to poly-crystalline $LiNbO_3$ which exhibited (012), (015), and (022) orientations. The I-V characteristics of $LiNbO_3$ films before and after anneal treatment showed that RTA improved the leakage current of films. The leakage current density of films decreased from $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-7} A/cm^2$ at room temperature measurement. Breakdown electric field of the films exhibited higher than 500 kV/cm. The C-V curves showed the clockwise hysteresis represents ferroelectric switching characteristics. From C-V curves, we calculated dielectric constant of thin film $LiNbO_3$ as 27.5 which is close to that of bulk value.
