This study was performed to observe the micro-structure change of surface, behavior of oxide change of element, the component transformation of the alloy and the bonding strength between the porcelain interface in order to investigate effects of indium, tin on interfacial properties of porcelain fused to low gold alloy. Hardness of castings was measured with a micro-Vicker's hardness tester. The compositional change of the surface of heat-treated specimen was analyzed with an EDS and an EPMA. The interfacial shear bonding strength between alloy specimen and fused porcelain was measured with a mechanical testing system(MTS 858.20). The results were as follows: 1) The hardness value of alloy increased as increasing amount of indium addition. 2) The formation of oxidation increased as increasing indium and tin contents after heat treatment. 3) Diffusion of indium and tin elements increased as increasing indium and tin contents in metal-porcelain surface after porcelain fused to metal firing. 4) The most interfacial shear bonding strength was increased as increasing a composition of adding elements, and a heat-treatment time, and an oxygen partial pressure. From the results of this study it was found that the addition of alloying elements such as indium and tin increase hardness of as-cast alloy, produce surface oxide layer of adding elements by heat-treatment which may improve interfacial bonding strength between alloy and porcelain.
The Keum River Estuary was investigated two times in April and July, 1986, to study process controlling chlorophyll distribution in estuarine waters. During the surveys, distribution patterns were studied for chlorophyll-a, nutrients, ph, SPM (Suspended Particulate Matter), DO (Dissolved Oxygen), temperature, salinity, etc. During April survey(low-discharge period), sea water penetrated to Kangkyung, about 35km upstream from the constructing weir, while in July (high-discharge period) only to 3 km upstream from the weir,In April SPM showed very high concentrations (500mg/l)on the average. But very low concentrations(about10mg/l)were observed in July due to high discharge of fresh water.Chlorophyll-a concentrations showed large variations both in time and space :much higher concentraations in July than in April and sharp decrease in concentrations at the fresh water-sea water interface (April:$6.5\mu\textrm{g}/{\ell}$ for fresh waters and 41.4\mu\textrm{g}/{\ell}$ forestuarine waters). Differebce ub chlorophyll-a concentrations for these two surveys appear to be caused mainly by the difference in effectiveness of penetrating lights controlled by SPM in the waters. Sharp decrease in chlorophll-a at the fresh water-sea water interface is believed to be resulted from mass mortality of fresh water phytoplankton caused by changes in osmotic pressure in the region. Observations in the same regions such as increase in AOU(Apparent Oxygen Utilization)and ammonia, decrease in PH,probably resulted through decomposition processes of dead planktons, furtuer support the idea.
Oxygen and sulfur isotope composition of pyrophyllite and pyrite from six pyrophyllite deposits in the Yangsan-Milyang areas (the Cheonbulsan, Dumyong, Dongrae, Youkwang, Sungjin and Milyang mines), and five deposits in the Whasoon-Dado-Haenam areas (the Byuksong, Songseok, Dado, Bugock and Nowha mines) were measured. Pyrophyllite ores both from the Yangsan-Milyang areas and the Dado-Haenam areas are composed mainly of high alumina minerals such as pyrophyllite, sericite and kaolinite. Most of altered rocks show diagnostic chacteristics of bleaching effect. Major minerals of the Songseok ore deposit in the Whasoon area are pyrophyllite, and diaspore with minor amounts of kaolinite and quartz. The Byuksong ores from the Whasoon area were composed mainly of andalusite, kaolinite, pyrophyllite and mica with small amounts of chloritoid, quartz and carbonaceous matter. The Byuksong and Songseok ores show metamorphic textures such as porphyroblastic, and pressure solution textures, and have low whiteness values, The ${\delta}^{18}O$ values of pyrophyllite from the Cheonbulsan and Dumyong mines in the Yangsan area, and the Dado and Nowha mines in the Dado-Haenam areas were in the range of 0.23~5.36%,. The relatively low 8 180 values provide conclusive evidence for hydrothermal activity in these deposits. The ${\delta}^{18}O$ values of pvrophvllite from the Songseok mine in the Whasoon area were measured as 6.70-8.13%, and these higher ${\delta}^{18}O$ values suggest that the Songseok ore deposit have been probably subjected to metamorphism. ${\delta}^{34}$S(pyrito) values from the Cheonbulsan, Dumyong, Youkwang, Dongrae, Sungjin and Milyang deposits in the Yangsan-Milyang areas, and the Dado pyrophyllite deposits in the Dado area range from -5.8 to 2.7%, which means that the pyrite sulfur could be of igneous origin. ${\delta}^{34}$S(pyrito) from the Nohwa mine in the Haenam area is, however, measured as -12.4%" implying the contamination of sulfur derived from the sedimentary country rocks. All of the studied high alumina deposits in the Yangsan-Milyang areas and the Dado-Haenam areas were hydrothermal in origin, whereas the Byuksong and Songseok ore deposits in the Whasoon area were probably of metamorphic origin.

Electrical conductivities of $(ZrO_2)_x-(Tm_2O_3)_y$ systems containing 1, 3 and 5mol% of $ZrO_2$ have been measured as a function of temperature and of oxygen partial pressure at temperatures from 600 to 1,100$^{\circ}$C and oxygen partial pressures from $10^{-5}$ to $2{\times}10^{-1}atm$. Plots of log conductivity vs. 1/T are found to be linear and average activation energy is 1.51 eV. The electrical conductivity dependences on PO$_2$ are different at two temperature regions, indicating ${\sigma}{\alpha}PO_2^{1/5.3}$ and ${\sigma}{\alpha}PO_2^{1/10.7}$ at high-and low-temperature regions, respectively. The defect of $(ZrO_2)_x-(Tm_2O_3)_y$ system is $V_{Tm}^{'''}$ and an electron hole is suggested as a carrier at high temperature region. At low temperature region, a mixed ionic and hole conduction is reasonable.
Solid solutions of the nonstoichiometric Dy1-xSrxCoO3-y system with the compositions of x=0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 have been synthesized by the solid state reaction at 1000 ℃ under atmospheric air pressure. The crystallographic structures of the solid solutions are analyzed by the powder X-ray diffraction patterns at room temperature. The analyses assign the compositions of x=0.00 and 0.25 to the orthorhombic system with space group of Pbnm/D2h16, the compositions of x=0.50 and 0.75 to the tetragonal system like a typical SrCoO2.86, and the composition of x=l.00 or SrCoO2.50 to the brownmillerite type system with space group of I**a. The reduced lattice volumes increase with x value due to the larger radius of Sr2+ ion than that of Dy3+ ion. The mole ratio of Co4+ ion to total Co ion with mixed valence state between Co3+ and Co4+ ions at B sites or τ value has been determined by an iodometric titration. All the samples except for the DyCoO3 compound show the mixed valnce state and thus the composition of x=0.50 has the maximum τ value in the system. The oxygen vacancies increasing with x value are randomly distributed over the crystal lattice except for the composition of x=l.00 which have the ordering of the oxygen vacancies. The nonstoichiometric chemical formulas of the Dy1-xSrxCo3+1-τCo4+τO3-(x-τ)/2 system are formulated from the x, τ, and y values. The electrical conductivity in the temperature range of 100 to 900 K increases with τ value linearly because of positive holes of the Co4+ ions in π* band as a conducting carrier. The activation energy of the x=0.50 as Ea=0.17 eV is minimum among other compouds. Broad and high order transition due to the overlap between σ* and π* bands broadened by the thermal activation is observed near 1000 K and shows a low temperature-semiconducting behavior. Magnetic properties following the Currie-Weiss law show the low to high spin transition in the cobaltate perovskite. Especially, the composition of x=0.75 presents weak ferromagnetic behavior due to the Co3+-O2--Co4+ indirect superexchange interaction.
Background and Objective : Although prone positioning has been reported to improve gas exchange, prone positioning alone does not seem to be sufficient to increase systemic oxygen transport in an acute lung injury. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the combined therapy of low dose nitric oxide (NO) inhalation and prone positioning has an additive effect on the oxygenation and hemodynamics in patients with severe ARDS. Patients and Methods : Twelve patients with ARDS were included. Prone positioning alone, later combined with nitric oxide inhalation (5~10 ppm) from the supine position (baseline) were performed with serial measurement of gas exchange, respiratory mechanics and hemodynamic at sequential time points. The patient was regarded as a responder to prone positioning if an increase in $PaO_2/FiO_2$ of more than 20 mm Hg at 30 min or 120 min intervals after prone positioning was observed compared to that of the baseline. The same criterion was applied during nitric oxide inhalation. Results : Eight patients (66.5%) responded to prone positioning and ten patients (83.3%) including the eight just mentioned responded to the addition of NO inhalation. The $AaDO_2$ level also decreased promptly with the combination of prone positioning and NO inhalation compared to that of prone positioning alone ($191{\pm}109$ mm Hg vs. $256{\pm}137$ mm Hg, P<0.05). Hemodynamic parameters and lung compliance did not change significantly during prone positioning only. Following the addition of NO inhalation to prone positioning, the mean pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary artery occlusion pressure decreased and cardiac output, stroke volume and oxygen delivery increased (P < 0.05) compared to those of prone 120 min. Conclusion : These findings indicate that NO inhalation would provide additional improvement in oxygenation and oxygen transport to mechanically ventilated patients with ARDS who are in a prone position.
Purpose : Pulmonary interstitial emphysema (PIE) primarily occurs in preterm infants suffering from respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and kept under mechanical ventilator care. Therefore, this study aimed to examine various risk factors for PIE, to identify conditions that can decrease the possibility of PIE development. Methods : PIE classification was conducted for 183 patients diagnosed to have RDS and receiving mechanical ventilator care with pulmonary surfactant between March 2000 and February 2007. The characteristics of each patient were analyzed through retrospective examination of their medical histories. Results : Among 183 patients, 17 had PIE; all factors, including birth weight, gestational age, RDS grade III or above, chorioamnionitis, and premature rupture of membranes, were statistically significant (P<0.05). The period of mechanical ventilator use was statistically significant, but the peak mean airway pressure and peak partial pressure of inspired oxygen were not. PIE mainly occurred on the right side or both sides rather than the left side and mostly developed within 72 h. The PIE group showed higher mortality rate than the control group, and the major cause of mortality was pneumothorax. Conclusion : Risk factors for PIE in infants suffering from RDS and kept under mechanical ventilator care include low gestational age, low birth weight, chorioamnionitis, and premature rupture of membranes. If any risk factors are noted, the infant must be observed closely for at least 72 h after birth.

A MILD (Moderate and Intense Low oxygen Dilution) combustor decreases NOx formation effectively during the combustion process and NOx formation is affected significantly by the exhaust gas entrainment rate toward fuel and air. The present study focused on the new MILD combustor, which has coaxial cylindrical tube. The outside tube of the new MILD combustor corresponds to the exhaust gas passage and the inner side tube is the furnace passage. The connection pipe is set between the outer side and the inner side tubes and coaxial air nozzle is inserted at the center of the connection pipe. A numerical analysis is accomplished to elucidate the characteristics of exhaust gas entrainment toward the inner furnace with the changes of air nozzle exit velocity, nozzle diameter, nozzle exit position and exhaust gas side pressure. The entrainment rate is proportional to the square root of air nozzle exit velocity and negatively proportional to the pressure difference between the exhaust gas side and furnace side pressures. The effect of air nozzle exit position is not considerable on the exhaust gas entrainment.

The synthesis of dimethyl carbonate(DMC) is a promising reaction for the use of naturally abundant carbon dioxide. DMC has gained considerable interest owing to its versatile chemical reactivity and unique properties such as high oxygen content, low toxicity, and excellent biodegradability. In this study, the synthesis of DMC through the transesterification of ethylene carbonate(EC) with methanol was investigated by using ionic liquid and metal oxide catalysts. The screening test of different catalysts revealed that choline hydroxide ([Choline][OH]) and 1-n-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium hydroxide([BMIm][OH]) had better catalytic performance than metal salts catalysts such as MgO, ZnO and CaO. The effects of reaction parameters such as reaction temperature, MeOH/EC mole ratio, and carbon dioxide pressure on the reactivity of [Choline][OH] catalyst were discussed. High temperature and high MeOH/EC mole ratio were favorable for high conversion of EC. However, the yield of DMC showed a maximum when carbon dioxide pressure was 1.34 MPa, and then it decreased for higher carbon dioxide pressure. Zinc chloride($ZnCl_2$) was used as co-catalyst with the ionic liquid catalyst. The mixed catalyst showed a synergy effect on the EC conversion and DMC yield probably due to the acid-base properties of the catalysts.
A 6-year-old, spayed female, Maltese dog with tachypnea and dry cough was presented to Gyeongsang National University Veterinary Medical Teaching hospital. On physical examination, its respiration rate was 132 per minute. Decreased partial pressure of oxygen, partial pressure of carbon dioxide, and hyperlactatemia were found on arterial blood gas analysis. Its diastolic blood pressure was 80 mmHg. Auscultation revealed arrhythmia. Electrocardiogram revealed P pulmonale, P mitrale, and ventricular premature complexes. Thoracic radiographs revealed mild enlargement of both atrium and moderate enlargement of the left ventricular. There was also a moderate alveolar pattern in the right and caudal part of the left cranial lung lobe. Two-dimensional echocardiography showed enlargement of generalized four chambers without remarkable findings of valvular degeneration. M-mode echocardiography showed decreased left ventricular fractional shortening and enlarged left ventricular internal diameter at both end-systolic and end-diastolic. Color-flow Doppler imaging revealed eccentric turbulent flow starting below the left ventricular outflow tract and extending into the left atrium during systole. Spectral Doppler recordings revealed a high velocity flow through the mitral, tricuspid, aorta, and pulmonic regurgitation. Restrictive transmitral flow revealed high E-wave velocity, short E-wave deceleration time, and reduced A-wave velocity. There was also low ejection velocity thorough left ventricular out tract flow. Based on echocardiographic examination, dilated cardiomyopathy was the tentative diagnosis. The dog was medicated with inotropes, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, and diuretics. At the 10-day following-up, the dog died suddenly. This report describes echocardiographic diagnosis and prognosis of dilated cardiomyopathy rarely reported in small breed dogs.
