  • This study is intend to improve flow pattern within evaporator, which is low quality and low mass flux, by installing narrow horizontal annular crevice so that enhance heat transfer coefficient. The motive, which made to study heat transfer enhancement by using narrow annular crevice, came from capillary phenomena and pumping force of generating vapor on refrigerant boiling. Tests were run about 5 models of turbulence promoter with CFC-12, in the range of evaporating temperature (15.deg. C), mass flux (50 to 100 kg/m$\^$2/s), heat flux (3.4 to 6.7 kW/m$\^$2/), quality (0.1 to O.5). It is observed that flow pattern within evaporator is changed closely to semi-annular flow or annular flow, of which refrigerant liquid is reached to the upper side of tube by using narrow annular crevice. When the narrow annular crevice is installed in the evaporator tube, local heat transfer coefficient is generally more improved than that of smooth tube. That fact is according to observed result of flow pattern. It is learned that narrow annular crevice has more efficiency at a low mass flux. At the TP-5, enhancement of heat transfer rate is about 170% compare to that of smooth tube on a low mass flux (50 kg/m$\^$2/s), and it is about 134% on a high mass flux (100 kg/M$\^$2/S), so that we know that it is on a very high condition.

  • An experimental study on post-CHF heat transfer has been performed with a $3\times3$ rod bundle using a vertical steam-water two-phase flow at low flow conditions. The effects of various parameters on the post-CHF heat transfer are investigated and the reasons for the parametric effects are discussed. As the heat transfer regime changes from CHF to post-CHF, the radial wall temperature distribution is changed depending on the pressure and the mass flux conditions. The superheat of the fluid increases considerably with an increase of the wall temperature (or heat flux) and with a decrease of the mass flux. This implies, indirectly, a strong thermal non-equilibrium at high wall temperature and low mass flux conditions. In order to improve the prediction accuracy of the existing post-CHF correlations, it is necessary to perform more experiments, particularly direct measurement of the vapor superheat, and to modify the correlation by considering a strong thermal non-equilibrium at low flow and low pressure conditions.

  • To clarify the hydraulic and thermal characteristics of ice slurry which made from 6.5% ethylene glycol-water solution flow in the double tube and plate type heat exchanger, experimental studies were performed. The mass flux and Ice fraction of ice slurry were varied from 800 to $3,500 kg/m^2s$(or 7 to 17 kg/min) and from 0 to 25%, respectively. During the experiment, it was found that the measured pressure drop and heat transfer rate increase with the mass flux and ice fraction; however the effect of ice fraction appears not to be significant at high mass flux region. At the region of low mass flux, a sharp increase in the pressure drop and heat transfer rate were observed depends on mass flux.

  • Evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure loss were measured for three different micro-fin tubes and a smooth tube. The experiments were carried out with R-22 over a wide range of vapor Quality, mass velocity and heat flux. Heat transfer coefficient of the tube with slightly modified fin shape was found to be higher than that of the commercial reference tube by 60%. The improvement of heat transfer has been achieved without noticeable increase of pressure loss. Heat transfer coefficient was increased with increasing quality, refrigerant mass flux, and heat flux. However, the effect of refrigerant mass flux and heat flux was not great. Heat transfer coefficient at bottom was lower than that at top of the tube in low quality region, which suggested the existence of stratification in the micro-fin tube. Pressure drop was linearly increased with increasing refrigerant quality and was proportional to about square of mass flux.

  • The present paper deals with an experimental study of boiling heat transfer characteristics of R-290, and is focused on pressure gradient and heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerant flow inside horizontal smooth minichannel with inner diameter of 3.0 mm and length of 2000 mm. The direct heating method applied for supplying heat to the refrigerant where the test tube was uniformly heated by electric current which was applied to the tube wall. The experiments were conducted with R-290 with purity of 99.99% at saturation temperature of 0 to $10^{\circ}C$. The range of mass flux is $50{\sim}250kg/m^2s$ and heat flux is $5{\sim}20kW/m^2$. The heat transfer coefficients of R-290 increases with increasing mass flux and saturation temperature, wherein the effect of mass flux is higher than that of the saturation temperature, whereas the heat flux has a low effect on increasing heat transfer coefficient. The significant effect of mass flux on heat transfer coefficient is shown at high quality, the effect of heat flux on heat transfer coefficient at low quality shows a domination of nucleate boiling contribution. The heat transfer coefficient of the experimental result was compared with six existing heat transfer coefficient correlation. Zang et al.'s correlation(2004) gave the best prediction of heat transfer coefficient.

  • Evaporation heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops were measured for smooth and micro-fin tubes with R-22 and R-410A. Heat transfer measurements were performed for 3.0m long horizontal tubes with nominal outside diameters of 9.52 and 7.0mm over an evaporating temperature range of -15 to 5$\^{C}$, a mass flux range of 68 to 211kg/㎡s, and a heat flux range of 5 to 15kW/㎡. It was observed that the heat transfer coefficient increased with mass flux. Evaporation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-410A increased as the evaporating temperature dropped at a lower heat flux. Generally, R-420A showed the higher heat transfer coefficients than R-22 in the range of low mass flux, high heat flux and high evaporating temperature. Pressure drop increased with a decrease of evaporating temperature and a rise of mass flux. Pressure drop of R-22 was higher than that of R-410A at the same mass flux.

  • To investigate parametric effect on CHF and to get CHF data, experimental study has been performed with vertical round tubes under the condition of low pressure and low flow (LPLF). Test sections are made of Inconel-625 tube and have the geometry of 8 and 10 mm in diameter, and 0.5 and 1.0 m in heated length. All experiments have been conducted at the pressure of under 9 bar, the mass flux of under 250 kg/$m^2$ and the inlet subcooling of 350 and 450 kJ/kg, for stable upward flow with water as a coolant. Flow regime analysis has been performed for obtained CHF data with Mishima's flow regime map, which reveals that most of the CHF occur in the annular-mist flow regime. General parametric trends of the collected CHF data are consistent with those of previous studies. However, for the pressure effect on CHF, two different are observed; For relatively high mass flux, CHF increases with pressure and far lower mass flux, CHF decrease with pressure. Using modern data regression tool, ACE algorithm, two new CHF correlations for LPLF condition are developed based on local condition and inlet condition, respectively. The developed CHF correlations show better prediction accuracy compared with existing CHF prediction methods.

  • Experimental results are presented for the effects of coil diameter, system pressure and mass flux on dryout pattern of two-phase flow in helically coiled tubes. Two tubes with coil diameters of 215 and 485 mm are used in the present study, Inlet system pressures range from 0.3 to 0.7 MPa, mass flux from 300 to 500 kg/㎡s, and heat flux from 36 to 80 kw/㎡. A partial dryout region exists because of the geometrical characteristics of the helically coiled tube. The length of the partial dryout region increases with coil diameter and system pressure. On the other hand, it decreases with increasing mass flux. The critical quality at the tube top side increases with mass flux, but decreases with increasing system pressure. This tendency is more notable when the coil diameter is larger. When the centrifugal force effect becomes stronger, dryout starts at the top and bottom sides of the tube. However, when the gravity effect becomes stronger, dryout is delayed at the tube bottom side. In some cases when the mass flux is low, dryout occurs earlier at the outer side than at the inner side of the tube because of film inversion.

  • In this study, condensation heat transfer tests were conducted in flat aluminum multi-channel tubes using R-22. Two internal geometries were tested ; one with smooth inner surface and the other with micro-fins. Data are presented for the followin~ range of variables ; vapor quality($0.1{\sim}0.9$), mass flux($200{\sim}600kg/m^2s$) and heat flux($5{\sim}15kW/m^2$). The micro-fin tube showed higher heat transfer coefficients compared with those of the smooth tube. The difference increased as the vapor quality increased. Surface tension force acting on the micro-fin surface at the high vapor quality is believed to be responsible. Different from the trends of the smooth tube, where the heat transfer coefficient increased as the mass flux increased, the heat transfer coefficient of the micro-fin tube was independent of the mass flux at high vapor quality, which implies that the surface tension effect on the fin overwhelms the vapor shear effect at the high vapor quality. Present data(except those at low mass flux and high quality) were well correlated by equivalent Reynolds number, Existing correlations overpredicted the present data at high mass flux.

  • An improved mechanistic model was developed to predict a convective boiling critical heat flux (CHF) in the vertical round tubes with uniform heat fluxes. The CHF formula for subcooled and low quality boiling was derived from the local conservation equations of mass, energy and momentum, together with appropriate constitutive relations. The model is characterized by the momentum balance equation to determine the limiting transverse interchange of mass flux crossing the interface of wall bubbly layer and core by taking account of the convective shear effect due to the frictional drag on the wall-attached bubbles. Comparison between the present model predictions and experimental CHF data from several sources shows good agreement over a wide range of How conditions. The present model shows comparable prediction accuracy with the CHF look-up table of Groeneveld et al. Also the model correctly accounts for the effects of flow variables as well as geometry parameters.
