  • A portable HTS RF SQUID-based system, weighing less than 20 kg has been built for susceptometry applications in weak magnetic fields, It includes a YBCO sensor for measuring the axial magnetic field component with a resolution of about $7{\times}10^{-13} T/Hz^{1/2}.$ This is determined by the intrinsic magnetic noise in the quasi-white noise region. There is a relaxation for a sudden increase in field due to magnetic flux creep in HTS. In this instance the time did not exceed 3~5 minutes.

  • The photoluminescence was measured in GaAs-AlGaAs double-quantum-well structure at high magnetic field. Although the phototransition characteristics displayed a free-particle transition at low magnetic field, the change of free-particle transition into bound-exciton transition was observed at high magnetic field (above 10 T). A charged exciton formation due to charge-unbalanced electron-hole was identified by using a spin-polarized photoluminescence method. An increase of exciton formation due to the localization of free-particle at magnetic field was observed according to the increase of magnetic field.

  • It has been a puzzle in solar physics how a low-lying magnetic structure such as a solar prominence surrounded by a strongly line-tied overlying field sometimes intrudes through the latter and goes into eruption. A numerical simulation study of the solar coronal plasma reveals that a ballooning instability can explain this type of eruptive process. We consider an idealized situation with two flux ropes merging. When magnetic field lines from different flux ropes reconnect, a new field line connecting farther footpoints is generated. Since the field line length abruptly increases, the field line expands outward. If the plasma beta is low, this expansion takes place more or less evenly over the whole field line. If, on the other hand, the plasma beta is high enough somewhere in this field line, the outward expansion is not even, but is localized as in a bulging balloon. This ballooning section of the magnetic field penetrates out of the overlying field, and eventually the originally underlying field and the overlying field come to interchange their apex positions. This process may explain how a field structure that has stably been confined by an overlying field can occasionally show a localized eruptive behavior.

  • Since Wertheimer and Leeper reported possible adverse health effects of magnetic field in 1979, worldwide researches on this issue have been conducted. More recently, the U.S. Congress instructed the NIEHS (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences), NIH (National Institute of Health) and DOE (Department of Energy) to direct and manage EMF RAPID (Electric and Magnetic Fields Research and Public Information Dissemination) program aimed at providing scientific evidence to clarify the potential for health risks from exposure to extremely low frequency electric and magnetic fields(ELF-EMF). Although they concluded that the scientific evidence suggesting adverse health risks of ELF-EMF is weak, the exposure to ELF-EMF cannot be recognized as entirely safe. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to describe magnetic field 3-D calculation and to evluate eddy current of human body compare to international guide line recognized one of the basic problems. In open boundary problem, Magnetic field using FEM is not advantageous in the point of the division of area and the proposition of the fictitious boundary. Therefore, we induced the analytic equation of magnetic field calculations so but the finite line segment based on Biot-Savarts law Also, Eddy currents induced due to ELF-EMF magnetic field are computed. To calculate induced currents, impedance method is used in this paper, An example model of human head with resolution of 1.27cm is used. In this paper, We evaluate the magnetic field and eddy current of human head around 765 kV transmission lines compare to international guide line.

  • Low-noise amplifiers in the radio-frequency (RF) band based on the direct current (DC) superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) can be used for quantum-limited measurements in precision physics experiments. For the prediction of peak-gain frequency of these amplifiers, we need a reliable design formula for the resonance frequency of the microstrip circuit. We improved the formula for the resonance frequency, determined by parameters of the DC SQUID and the input coil, and compared the design values with experimental values. The proposed formula showed much accurate results than the conventional formula. Minor deviation of the experimental results from the theory can be corrected by using the measured geometrical parameters of the input coil line.

  • We have fabricated YBCO SQUID 1st order gradiometers on $30^{\circ}$STO bicrystal substrate. The pickup coil size was 3.8mm$\times$3.8mm and baseline was 5mm. Three types of SQUID gradiometer were designed and tested for unshielded operation; solid pickup coil, pickup coil consisting of 4 parallel $ 50\mu\textrm{m}$-wide loops, and solid pickup coil with flux dam. We have investigated external magnetic field dependence of the SQUID gradiometers on the magnetic field noiseproperties. Significant increase of low frequency noise with the application of static field has been observed in the case of parallel and flux dam type pickup coil above threshold field of $1.3 \mu$T. Magnetic field noise at 1 Hz measured in the magnetically shielding room was 30, 165, 480 fTcm/sup -1/Hz/sup -1/2/ for solid type and slot type and parallel loops type, respectively.

  • With biological effects by ELF(Extremely Low Frequency) magnetic field generated from power system, the transient magnetic field from electric appliances is a major issue presently. In this paper, we measured magnetic field distributions around electric appliances in view of harmonics and analyzed them by the use of an equivalent magnetic dipole moment method. This method was applied to 19 types of appliances, and their equivalent magnetic dipole moments and harmonic components were determined. The results show that this method is applicable to many appliances and the higher frequency magnetic field may induce higher current inside living bodies.

  • The magnetic field of the extremely low frequency that occurs in the substation facilities was surveyed to present ways to broaden understanding of the magnetic field characteristics. We have investigated the level of the magnetic fields in the substation areas and control rooms of 25 substations in the metropolitan area in accordance with the measurement method of IEC CISPR(IEC/TC106 PT 62110). We propose objective and reliable policy approaches such as the electromagnetic field certification system to more accurately understand the property of magnetic field.

  • For the treatment of osteoarthritis, pulsed electromagnetic field stimulus has been suggested as a useful therapeutic method in rehabilitative medicine. Most studies have been performed under low-frequency and low-energy to find out biological properties for stimulating chondrocyte with pulsed magnetic field. In this study, the effect of strong pulse magnetic field on the human chondrosarcoma cells (SW-1353) has been investigated by means of cell counting, morphologies, and gene expression of cartilage extracellular matrix genes. The SW-1353 cells were exposed under the field intensities of 270, 100, 55, 36, and 26 mTesla during 6 hours a day in 5 consecutive days. The pulse magnetic field with an LRC oscillating signal has the pulse width of 0.126 msec and stimulation period of 1 sec. For the 270 and 100 mTesla stimulation, the cell proliferation significantly increased in 21-24% as compared with the non-stimulated cells. Gene expression of cartilage extracellular matrix genes (ACAN, COMP and COL2A1) was assayed by quantitative real time-PCR method. The ACAN gene expression showed a significant brightness, which means the increase on gene expression, compared with the non-stimulated cells. Our results suggest that the strong pulse magnetic field stimulation can be utilized to accelerate cell proliferation and gene expression on human chondrosarcoma cells.

  • This paper investigates occupational exposure to time-varying magnetic field generation in high power rectifier systems. Two different kinds of high power rectifier systems of 25kA are modeled and analyzed. The performance is compared and evaluated on the basis of exposure guidelines from ICNIRP. In order to focus on the qualitative effect of rectifier operation, the mechanical structure of current carrying conductors is simplified as infinite long bus-bar model and low frequency harmonic contents up to 65kHz are considered. Thyristor rectifier generates a significant amount of low frequency magnetic field harmonic contents both at ac and dc side of rectifier infringing the limit from ICNIRP. The multilevel rectifier-IGCT type has almost negligible field generation from ac input side and smaller harmonic contents in dc load side complying with ICNIRP guideline. This remarkable advantage of multilevel rectifier-IGCT type can lead to very simple site layout design for installation and cost-effective compliance to guideline of occupational exposure against magnetic field.
