Wave energy conversion utilizing vertical motion of water in the array of water chambers aligned in the direction of wave propagation

  • As a new technical approach, wave energy converter by using vertical motion of water in the multiple water chambers were developed to realize actual wave power generation as eco-environmental renewable energy. And practical use of wave energy converter was actually to require the following conditions: (1) setting up of the relevant device and its application to wave power generation in case that severe wave loading is avoided; (2) workability in installation and maintenance operations; (3) high energy conversion potential; and (4) low cost. In this system, neither the wall(s) of the chambers nor the energy conversion device(s) are exposed to the impulsive load due to water wave. Also since this system is profitable when set along the jetty or along a long floating body, installation and maintenance are done without difficulty and the cost is reduced. In this paper, we describe the system which consists of a float, a shaft connected with another shaft, a rack and pinion arrangement, a ratchet mechanism, and rotary type generator(s). Then, we present the dynamics model for evaluating the output electric power, and the results of numerical calculation including the effect of the phase shift of up/down motion of the water in the array of water chambers aligned along the direction of wave propagation.

APPLICATION AND EVALUATION OF THE GLEAMS MODEL TO A CATTLE GRAZING PASTURE FIELD IN NORTH ALABAMA

  • The GLEAMS (Groundwater Loading Effects of Agricultural Management System, version 3.0) water quality model was used to predict hydrology and water quality and to evaluate the effects of soil types from a cattle-grazed pasture field of Bermuda-Rye grass rotation with poultry litter application as a fertilizer in North Alabama. The model was applied and evaluated by using four years (1999-2002) of field-measured data to compare the simulated results for the 2.71- ha Summerford watershed. $R^2$ values between observed and simulated runoff, sediment yields, TN, and TP were 0.91, 0.86, 0.95, and 0.69, respectively. EI (Efficiency Index) of these parameters were 0.86, 0.67, 0.70, and 0.48, respectively. The statistical parameters indicated that GLEAMS provided a reasonable estimation of the runoff, sediment yield, and nutrient losses at the studied watershed. The soil infiltration rates were compared with the rainfall events. Only high intensity rainfall events generated runoff from the watershed. The measured and predicted infiltration rates were higher during dry soil conditions than wet soil conditions. The ratio of runoff to precipitation was ranging from 2.2% to 8.8% with average of 4.3%. This shows that the project site had high infiltration and evapotranspiration which generated the low runoff. The ratio of runoff to precipitation according to soil types by the GLEAMS model appeared that Sa (Sequatchie fine sandy loam) soil type was higher and Wc (Waynesboro fine sandy loam, severely eroded rolling phase) soil type relatively lower than the weighted average of the soil types in the watershed. The model under-predicted runoff, sediment yields, TN, and TP in Wb (Waynesboro fine sandy loam, eroded undulating phase) and Wc soil types. General tendency of the predicted data was similar for all soil types. The model predicted the highest runoff in Sa soil type by 105% of the weighted average and the lowest runoff in Wc soil type by 87% of the weighted average

  • A low molecular weight component named bone morphogenetic protein(BMP) chemically isolated from the organic matrix of bone, induce postfetal connective tissue cells surrounding small blood vessels to differentiate into cartilage and bone. The end product of BMP is a spherical ossicle of lamella bone filled with red bone marrow for the functional loading. This is a important point that the graft material is embedded the defect site during the implant surgery. Because present knowledge of the relationship between BMP and bone regeneration arises mainly from studies of induced bone formation in heterotopic sites, it would be helpful to determine whether BMP plays any part in the process of bone healing. The BMPs have been shown to play crucial roles in normal skeletal development as well as bone healing and are able to activate transcription of genes involved in cellular migration, proliferation, and differentiation. The delivery of BMP on matrices has been efficacious in the treatment of defect bone in implant surgery. The purpose of the histologic study was to evaluate the effect of DLB(demineralized lyophilized bone) coated with purified human BMP(hBMP-I) in immediate implant surgery with bony defect to obtain the functional structure of implant asap. The ability of a graft of hBMP-I to accelerate bony defect repair provides a rationale for its use in immediate implant surgery that have large bone defect in edentulous area.

황에 저항성을 가지는 수성가스 전환반응 촉매의 연구 II. CoMo 촉매의 활성에 미치는 알칼리 금속염의 영향 (A Study on the Sulfur-Resistant Catalysts for Water Gas Shift Reaction II. Effect of Alkali Metal Salt on the Activity of CoMo Catalyst)

  • 황피독에 저항성을 가지는 수성가스 전환반응용 CoMo 계열 촉매에 알칼리금속염 첨가가 반응활성에 미치는 영향에 대하여 연구하였다. 알칼리금속염의 음이온과 양이온의 각각에 대한 영향을 알아보기 위하여 크게 두 경우로 나누어 촉매를 제조하였다. 그 하나는, 양이온을 K로 고정시키고 음이온을 변형시킨 경우로서, 반응활성의 변화는 BET 표면적의 변화로 설명되었다. 다른 한 경우는, 음이온을 $NO_3^-$로 고정시키고 알칼리금속 이온을 변형시킨 경우로서, Li가 첨가된 촉매의 활성이 가장 뛰어났으며 다른 양이온의 경우에는 서로 비슷한 낮은 활성을 보였다. 알칼리금속의 첨가량의 변화에 따른 BET 표면적의 변화와 반응활성의 변화가 같은 경향을 보였다. 알칼리금속염의 양이온을 변화시킨 경우에는 BET 표면적과 정8면체 배위구조 속의 $Mo^{6+}$에 대한 정4면체 배위구조 속의 $Mo^{6+}$의 비, 즉 $Mo^6+[T]/Mo^{6+}[O]$ 값의 복합적인 관계를 통해 반응활성의 변화를 설명할 수 있었다.

Mode identifiability of a cable-stayed bridge based on a Bayesian method

  • Modal identification based on ambient vibration data has attracted extensive attention in the past few decades. Since the excitation for ambient vibration tests is mainly from the environmental effects such as wind and traffic loading and no artificial excitation is applied, the signal to noise (s/n) ratio of the data acquired plays an important role in mode identifiability. Under ambient vibration conditions, certain modes may not be identifiable due to a low s/n ratio. This paper presents a study on the mode identifiability of an instrumented cable-stayed bridge with the use of acceleration response data measured by a long-term structural health monitoring system. A recently developed fast Bayesian FFT method is utilized to perform output-only modal identification. In addition to identifying the most probable values (MPVs) of modal parameters, the associated posterior uncertainties can be obtained by this method. Likewise, the power spectral density of modal force can be identified, and thus it is possible to obtain the modal s/n ratio. This provides an efficient way to investigate the mode identifiability. Three groups of data are utilized in this study: the first one is 10 data sets including six collected under normal wind conditions and four collected during typhoons; the second one is three data sets with wind speeds of about 7.5 m/s; and the third one is some blind data. The first two groups of data are used to perform ambient modal identification and help to estimate a critical value of the s/n ratio above which the deficient mode is identifiable, while the third group of data is used to perform verification. A couple of fundamental modes are identified, including the ones in the vertical and transverse directions respectively and coupled in both directions. The uncertainty and s/n ratio of the deficient mode are investigated and discussed. A critical value of the modal s/n ratio is suggested to evaluate the mode identifiability of the deficient mode. The work presented in this paper could provide a base for the vibration-based condition assessment in future.

  • 군 전술정보통신체계(TICN: Tactical Information and Communication Network)는 이동기지국시스템(MSAP: Mobile Subscriber Access Point)을 활용하여 음성 및 데이터 등 실시간 멀티미디어 서비스를 제공한다. 이때 소용량 무선전송체계와 대용량 무선전송체계를 통해 외부전송로를 구성하게 된다. 각 무선전송체계의 통신기기들은 전술차량에 탑재되고 전술차량에 공급전원이 통합전원제어장치로 절체 될 때 전원차단을 예방하기 위해 2차전지가 사용된다. 본 논문은 이동기지국시스템 통합제어장치 배터리 충전용 무선전력전송기기를 장하분배법을 이용하여 기본 설계하고 공극에 의한 설계 변수인 1차 측 권선 수와 코어 재질선정을 FEM(Finite Elements Method) 해석을 통해 확인하였다.

  • Si3N4 겔캐스팅공정 제어를 위하여, 슬립 조성의 영향이 슬립의 점성특성과 성형체의 기계적 특성 및 소결체의 밀도에 미치는 영향에 대하여 조사하였다. 아크릴아마이드 모노머, 고분자전해질, 그리고 질화규소의 혼합물을 어트리터에 예비혼합한 후 볼밀링하여 슬립을 제조하였다. 개시제가 혼합된 슬립을 진공탈포하고 몰드에 주입하고 중합을 진행하였으며, 겔화된 슬립을 건조하여 성형체를 얻었다. 슬립의 특성과 성형체의 기계적 특성을 평가하기 위해, 슬립의 점도 측정과 직경방향 압축시험을 행하였다. 그 결과, near net shaping을 위한 낮은 점도를 갖는 46 vol%의 고농도 질화규소 슬립의 제조가 가능하였다. 성형체가 기계적 특성은 주로 모노머의 농도에 비례하여 증가하였다. 또한, 겔캐스트 성형체의 인장강도가 약 3MPa이 넘으면 기계적 가공이 가능하였으며, 겔캐스팅 성형체를 176$0^{\circ}C$, 3시간 상압소결하여 약 98.5%의 상대밀도를 얻을 수 있었다.

정적 부하 작업에서 EMG 모델과 세가지 최적화 모델을 이용한 척추 부하 평가 (Prediction of the Spinal Load during Static Loading Conditions using EMG model and Three Optimization models)

  • This study investigated the spinal loads(L5/S1 disc compression and shear forces) predicted from four biomechanical models: one EMG model and three optimization models. Three objective functions used in the optimization models were to miminize 1) the cubed muscle forces : MF3, 2) the cubed muscle stress : MS3, 3) maximum muscle intensity : MI. Twelve healthy male subjects participated in the isometric voluntary exertion tests to six directions : flexion/extension, left/right lateral bending, clockwise/ counterclockwise twist. EMG signals were measured from ten trunk muscles and spinal loads were assessed at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90%MVE(maximum voluntary exertion) in each direction. Three optimization models predicted lower L5/S1 disc compression forces than the EMG model, on average, by 31%(MF3), 27%(MS3), 8%(MI). Especially, in twist and extension, the differences were relatively large. Anterior-posterior shear forces predicted from optimization models were lower, on average, by 27%(MF3), 21%(MS3), 9%(MI) than by the EMG model, especially in flexion(MF3 : 45%, MS3 : 40%, MI : 35%). Lateral shear forces were predicted far less than anterior-posterior shear forces(total average = 124 N), and the optimization models predicted larger values than the EMG model on average. These results indicated that the optimization models could underestimate compression forces during twisting and extension, and anterior-posterior shear forces during flexion. Thus, future research should address the antagonistic coactivation, one major reason of the difference between optimization models and the EMG model, in the optimization models.

  • KIER has been developing a Ru-based preferential oxidation catalysts and a novel fuel processing system to provide hydrogen rich gas to residential PEMFCs system. The catalytic activity of Ru-based catalysts was investigated at different Ru loading amount and different support structure. The obtained result indicated that 2 wt% loaded Ru-based catalyst supported on ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ showed high activity in low temperature range and suppressed the methanation reaction. The developed prototype fuel processor showed thermal efficiency of 78% as a HHV basis with methane conversion of 92%. CO concentration below 10 ppm in the produced gas is achieved with separate preferential oxidation unit under the condition of $[O_2]/[CO]=2.0$. The partial load operation have been carried out to test the performance of fuel processor from 40% to 80% load, showing stable methane conversion and CO concentration below 10 ppm. The durability test for the daily start-stop and 8 h operation procedure is under investigation and shows no deterioration of its performance after 50 start-stop cycles. 콘크리트 합성부재의 수평 전단강도 평가 (Evaluation of Horizontal Shear Strength for Concrete Composite Members)

  • 본 연구에서는 콘크리트 합성부재의 합리적인 수평전단강도 평가를 위하여 합성보 전단 실험을 수행하였다. 실험 변수로는 PC부재의 유형(PC+RC, PSC+RC, SFRC+RC), 고강도 콘크리트 대비 저강도 콘크리트의 면적비, 전단철근비를 고려하였다. 실험 결과, 수평 균열 발생 시 부재 내력이 감소하였으며 전단철근의 기여도와 계면 상태가 수평전단강도에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 기존 실험 결과를 실험 방법 및 계면 상태로 분류하여 현행구조기준과 비교하였으며 분석결과를 바탕으로 개선된 설계방안을 제안하였다.
