  • In this paper, electronic ballast using resonant inverter for HID lamp is designed and implemented. The proposed electronic ballast is used the soft switching technology ZVS(Zero Voltage Switching) to reduce turn-on and turn-off loss. The ignition of proposed electronic ballast is achieved by controlling a full bridge inverter which is consisted of LC filter for resonance. After ignition the ballast operates as a low frequency square wave inverter by controlling a full bridge inverter as a buck converter. After ignition at resonant frequency of $f_o$=160kHz, the switching frequency of a buck converter is consisted of 50kHz of high frequency and 170Hz of low frequency. This is for attenuating high frequency harmonics and avoiding acoustic resonance. The experimental results show that electronic ballast using resonant inverter is operated stably.

The ballast consists of the boost pre-converter for power factor correction (PFC), a flyback a converter, half-bridge inverter and ignitor. To reject acoustic resonance phenomena, we have designed electronic ballast driving with the low frequency square wave. As results of this study, the ballast had not flicker phenomena and promoted corrected the factor (PF) highly

  • The conventional Three-Stage electronic ballast is stable, but Two-Stage electronic ballast has been researching because of efficiency. Three-Stage electronic ballast is consisted of PFC circuit, buck converter, and inverter circuit, but Two-stage is consisted of PFC circuit, Buck-Inverter full bridge circuit. The Buck-Inverter full bridge inverter consists of two half bridge inverters for low frequency switching, and high frequency switching. In the case of street lamp it is far from a lamp to a ballast, the conventional pulsed high voltage ignitor can not turn on the HID lamps because of reduction of ignition voltage. Therefore, it needs to do the research on a resonant ignition to turn on the HID lamps. Therefore, in the Two-Stage electronic ballast which has the resonant tank for ignition, the transient resonant current because of low frequency changing is analyzed, the novel algorithm is proposed to resuce the transient current.

  • A low frequency square wave electronic ballast for the high intensity discharge(HID) lamps using fuzzy logic controller is developed. This electronic ballast consists a buck converter, a low frequency square wave full bridge inverter, a high voltage pulse generator for the HID lamp ignition, an over current protection circuit and an 8-bit microcontroller. The ballast system is operated on the constant current mode during the HID lamp start-up process and the system is operated on the constant power mode during steady state. Experimental results show that the fuzzy logic control operation is carried out successfully by the 8-bit microcontroller PIC16F877 In this electronic ballast system, in spite of the limited control bandwidth caused by low operating speed of the microcontroller, the good performance in the constant lamp current characteristic is obtained. Acoustic resonance of the HID lamps can be effectively avoided because the instantaneous In lamp power is fully constant due to the low frequency square wave drive.

  • In this paper, We proposed electronic ballast that applys Buck Converter operation principle to Full-Bridge inverter. The proposed ballast consists of an EMI Filter, a full-bridge rectifier, a passive power factor correction (PFC) circuit and a full-bridge inverter. The passive PFC is used and a Full-Bridge inverter operation by two frequency. High Side and Low Side switch was driven by high frequency and low frequency and realized buck Converter's operation. The lamp is driven by Low Frequency square wave to avoid Acoustic Resonance. Also, bulk of inductor is reduced by high frequency switching. Performance of the proposed ballast was validated through computer simulation using Pspice, experimentation and by applying it to an electronic ballast for a prototype 700W MHL.

  • This paper presents an electronic ballast using a step down converter, a low frequency inverter for high intensity short-arc discharge lamp. The proposed ballast is composed of a full-wave rectifier, a step down converter operated as a current source with power regulation and a low frequency inverter with external ignition circuit. The ignition circuit generates high voltage pulse of $3{\sim}5[kV]$ peak, 130[Hz] periodically. Moreover, it is able to reignite at regular intervals by protective circuit. As experimental results on the test, acoustic resonance phenomenon is eliminated by operating the low frequency square wave voltage and current. Lamp voltage, current and consumption power are measured 123.8[V], 8.1[A] and 1,002[W], respectively. It was confirmed that the designed ballast operate the lamp with a constant power.

  • Requirements for high-efficiency equipment for energy saving are rapidly increasing recently keeping pace with development of digital and semiconductor technology. Accordingly, there are many changes and development in ballast. Ballast currently in use are Magnetic ballast (Coiled Type) and Electronic ballast. Electronic ballast produces incredible energy saving effect, but falls short of confidence instead. In addition, use at higher frequency through switching device creates Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and high frequency. EMI creates low quality of equipment, damage in facilities and low productivity by leading miss operation of equipment, and interferes with surrounding machines. In this analysis I am going to examine characteristics of EMI on the Electronic ballast of FLR32SS one type pursuant to annex 3 of Electric Goods Technology Standard, and counter technology.

  • In this paper, we analyzed and measured the characteristics of the ballasts for HID lamps according to the cable properties. The ignition voltage and the steady state voltage and current are depend on the feature and the length of the cables. So we measured characteristics at 25[m] and 100[m] distances used by a low frequency electronic ballast a high frequency electronic ballast and a magnetic ballast. By measured and analyzed result of characteristics for various kinds of ballast and cables, we concluded that the electronic ballast driving with the low frequency is better than my other ballasts, and that the capacitance between the cables is important.
