  • The purpose of our research is to understand geometric and topological aspects of real projective structures on surfaces. A real projective surface is a differentiable surface with an atlas of charts to $RP^2$ such that transition functions are restrictions of projective automorphisms of $RP^2$. Since such an atlas lifts projective geometry on $RP^2$ to the surface locally and consistently, one can study the global projective geometry of surfaces.

  • Cholesteric liquid crystals are one dimensional photonic band-gap materials due to their birefringence and periodic structure. Dye doped cholesteric liquid crystals are self-assembling, mirror-less, low threshold laser structures that exhibit distributed feedback. In this review paper, we have presented the development in the field of lasing characteristics of dye doped cholesteric liquid crystals.

  • A study was performed to determine the optimum height for an arc air gouging of temporary attachments, which were attached at the pressure vessel made of low alloy steel. Frequently, the crack occurred in the base metal by the excessive heat input during an arc air gouging process to remove the temporary attachments. A numerical analysis by 2-dimensional finite element method was performed to calculate the temperature distribution in the base metal during the removal of temporary attachments. And then the mock-up test was performed to verify the numerical results. Numerical values showed good agreement with the experimental results. These results indicated that the defects due to the excessive heat input during an arc air gouging were dependent on the height of temporary attachments remained above hie main products.

  • Flow instability is investigated in a two-dimensional channel with thin baffles placed symmetrically in the vertical direction and periodically in the streamwise dircetion. At low Reynolds numbers, the flow is steady and symmetric. Above a critical Reynolds number, the steady flow undergoes a Hopf bifurcation leading to unsteady periodic flow. As Reynolds number further increases, we observe the onset of secondary instability. At high Reynolds numbers, the two-dimensional periodic flow becomes three dimmensional. To identify the onset of secondary instability, we carry out Floquet stability analysis. We obseved the transition to 3D flow at a Reynolds number of about 125. Also, we computed dominant spanwise wavenumbers near the critical Reynolds number, and visualized vortical structures associated with the most unstable spanwise wave.

  • In order to improve the damage tolerance of the conventional laminated composites, threedimensional fiber structures incorporated with stitching yams have been utilized in this study. From the newly developed process termed as TAPIS(TApe Placement Incorporated with Stitching), carbon/epoxy composites have been fabricated. Two-dimensional composites with the same stacking sequence as 3D counterparts have also been fabricated for the property comparison. To examine the damage resistance performance the low speed drop weight impact test has been adopted. For the assessment of damage after the impact loading, specimens were subjected to C-scan nondestructive inspection compression after impact(CAI) were also conducted to evaluate residual compressive strength. Although the damage area of 3D composites was greatly reduced$(30-40\%)$ compared with that of 2D composites, the CAI strength did not show drastic improvement.

  • Three-dimensional vortex structures in the corner region of translating normal plates are visualized experimentally with defocusing digital particle image velocimetry. Vortex formation processes for three plates with corner angle $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, and $120^{\circ}$ are compared in order to study the effect of corner shape on vortex formation. In all cases, the self-induction of the starting vortex and its interaction with the potential flow induced by the moving plate cause the vortex to change its form dynamically after the plate starts to translate. While the vortex near a corner follows the plate in the low corner angle of $60^{\circ}$, the vortex separates early from the plate and its forward motion becomes slow in the high corner angle of $120^{\circ}$. It is also found that the starting vortex can transport inward at the corner, which depends on the corner angle.

  • Building-level response to post-earthquake fire hazards in steel buildings has been assessed using primarily two-dimensional analyses of the lateral force resisting system. This approach may not adequately consider potential vulnerabilities in the gravity framing system. For this reason, three-dimensional (3D) finite element models of a 10-story case study building with perimeter moment resisting frames were developed to analyze post-earthquake fire events and better understand building response. Earthquakes are simulated using ground motion time histories, while Eurocode parametric time-temperature curves are used to represent compartment fires. Incremental dynamic analysis and incremental fire analysis procedures capture a range of hazard intensities. Findings show that the structural response due to earthquake and fire hazards are somewhat decoupled from one another. Regardless of the level of plastic hinging present in the moment framing system due to a seismic event, gravity column failure is the initiating failure mode in a fire event.

  • The scaled water-cooled Reactor Cavity Cooling System (RCCS) experimental facility reproduces a passive safety feature to be implemented in Generation IV nuclear reactors. It keeps the reactor cavity and other internal structures in operational conditions by removing heat leakage from the reactor pressure vessel. The present work uses Flownex one-dimensional thermal-fluid code to model the facility and predict the experimental thermal-hydraulic behavior. Two representative steady-state cases defined by the bulk volumetric flow rate are simulated (Re = 2,409 and Re = 11,524). Results of the cavity outlet temperature, risers' temperature profile, and volumetric flow split in the cooling panel are also compared with the experimental data and RELAP system code simulations. The comparisons are in reasonable agreement with the previous studies, demonstrating the ability of Flownex to simulate the RCCS behavior. It is found that the low Re case of 2,409, temperature and flow split are evenly distributed across the risers. On the contrary, there's an asymmetry trend in both temperature and flow split distributions for the high Re case of 11,524.

  • Allowing structures to uplift in earthquakes can significantly reduce or even avoid the development of plastic hinges within the structure. The permanent deformations in the structure can thus be minimized. However, uplift of footings can cause additional horizontal movements of a structure. With an increase in movement relative to adjacent structures, the probability of pounding between structures increases. This experimental study reveals that the footing mass can be used to control the vertical displacement of footing and thus reduce the horizontal displacements of an upliftable structure. A four storey model structure with plastic hinges and uplift capability was considered. Shake table tests using ten different earthquake records were conducted. Three different footing masses were considered. It is found that the amplitude of footing uplift can be greatly reduced by increasing the mass of the footing. As a result, allowing structural uplift does not necessary increase the horizontal displacement of the structure. The results show that with increasing footing weight, the interaction between structural and footing response can increase the contribution of the higher modes to the structural response. Consequently, the induced vibrations on secondary structure increase.

  • Inner structured and bonded panel, or ISB Panel, as a kind of sandwich type panel, has metallic inner structures which have low relative density, due to their dimensional shape of metal between a pair of metal skin sheets or face sheets. Previous works showed that ISB panels containing inner structures formed as repeated pyramidal shapes saved weight up to $60\%$ in condition of same stiffness comparing with solid sheet. In this work, woven metal is adapted to inner structures replacing pyramidal structures. The test specimens of ISB panel containing woven metal made by multi-point electric resistance welding and 3-point bending test have been carried out. The results of experiments and comparisons of process parameters, stiffness and failure mode are discussed.
