  • This study considers an implementation of artificial neural networks to the receding horizon optimal control and is applications to power systems. The Generalized Backpropagation-Through-Time (GBTT) algorithm is presented to deal with a quadratic cost function defined in a finite-time horizon. A decentralized approach is used to control the complex global system with simpler local controllers that need only local information. A Neural network based Receding horizon Optimal Control (NROC) 1aw is derived for the local nonlinear systems. The proposed NROC scheme is implemented with two artificial neural networks, Identification Neural Network (IDNN) and Optimal Control Neural Network (OCNN). The proposed NROC is applied to a power system to improve the damping of the low-frequency oscillation. The simulation results show that the NROC based power system stabilizer performs well with good damping for different loading conditions and fault types.

  • The OBCS(On-Board Computer System) achieves train system diagnosis and control. For commercial train operation, it must guarantee the reliability for safe and have low cost operational algorithm. To guarantee the diagnosis function and the control ability of OBCS, sufficient actual railway running test under severe conditions is required. But, running test has some limitations for making severe conditions because of safety and it demands quite long time and a lot of costs. So simulator is required and is utilized in many countries. We designed a simulator to test various functions and performance of controllers for high speed train's power car under various conditions and it is represented briefly.

  • This paper describes an accurate and stable current control method of switched reluctance motors(SRMs), which have recently attracted considerable wide attention owing to their favorable features, such as high performance, high durability, structural simplicity, low cost, etc. In most cases, the PI controllers(PICC) have been used mostly for the current control of electric motors because their algorithm and selection of controller gain are relatively simpler compared to other controllers. On the other hand, the PI controller requires an adjustment of the controller gains for each operating point when nonlinear system parameters change rapidly. This paper presents a stable current control method of an SRM using self-tuning fuzzy current controller(STFCC) under nonlinear parameter variation. The performance of the considered method is validated via a dynamic simulation of the current controlled SRM drive using Matlab/Simulink program.

  • Motion control systems are widely deployed in various industrial automation processes. The motion controller, which is a key element of motion control systems, has stringent real-time constraints. The controller must provide a short and deterministic control message transmission cycle, and minimize the actuation deviation among motor drives. To meet these requirements, hardware-based proprietary controllers have been prevalent. However, since it is becoming difficult for such an approach to meet increasing needs of system interoperability and scalability, nowadays, software-based universal motion controllers are regarded as their substitutes. Recently, embedded motion controller solutions are gaining attention due to low cost and relatively high performance. In this paper, we designed and implemented an embedded motion controller on an ARM-based evaluation board by using Xenomai real-time kernel and other open source software components. We also measured and analyzed the performance of our embedded controller under a realistic test-bed environment. The experimental results show that our embedded motion controller can provide relatively deterministic performance with synchronized control of three motor axis at 2 ms control cycle.

  • Recently, the Korean Government announced the Korean New Deal as a national development strategy to overcome the economic recession from the pandemic crisis and lead the global action against structural changes. In the Korean New Deal, the Green New Deal related with the energy aims to achieve net-zero emissions and accelerates the transition towards a low-carbon and green economy. To this end, the government plans to promote an increased use of renewable energy in the society at large. This paper introduces a binary power generation using unused low-grade thermal energy to accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon and green economy and examines a control system based on Neural Network which is capable maintenance at low-cost by an unmanned automated operation in actual power generation environment. It is expected that the realization of binary power generation accelerates introduction of renewable energy along with solar and wind power.

  • In this paper, an advanced torque control scheme of SRM using DITC(Direct Instantaneous Torque Control) and PWM(pulse width modulation) is presented. Different from conventional DITC method, proposed method uses one or two switching modes at every sampling time, instead of only one switching mode. The duty ratio of the phase switch is regulated according to the torque error and simple control rules of DITC. Moreover the sampling time of control can be extended, which allows implementation on low cost micro-controllers. A simple calculation of PWM can assure a constant switching frequency with an excellent control performance. The proposed control method is verified by the simulations and experimental results.

  • Since the introduction of Nanoimprint in the mid-1990s, Nanoimprint lithography, a low-cost, non-convential method, has been the dominant lithography technology that guarantees high-throughput patterning of nanostructures. Based on the mechanical embossing mechanism, Nanoimprint lithography creates the nanopatterns on the polymer material cast on the substrate. In essence, the process needs nanofabrication equipment for printing with the adequate control of temperature, pressure and control of parallels of the stamp and substrate. This article introduce the possibility and reality of the thermal control on the hot plate using a CFD code. Numerical computation has been conducted for assessing the feasibility of a hot plate($120{\times}120\;mm2$). PID control is adopted to ensure high temperature uniformity in several zones. Parallel experiments have also been performed for verifying thermal performance. Not only show the results the optimum number of thermocouples related to controllers but also suggest that the thermal simulation using a CFD code would be an alternative method to design and develop the thermal control equipment in the financial aspect.

  • During an AC motor's start-up accelerating period, a large amount of current is required to reach to the rating speed. This is called in-rush current. This peak in-rush current can be more than about several times the operating or steady-state current in the full load rating of the motor. In-rush current is present in both and electronic ballasts. The main area of concern is the tripping of circuit breaker and fuses which can affect electrical system components From this, we can see that the electrical power controllers will be rather concerned, since they have to supply the actual current necessary to start the motor. This paper presents a new method to reducing in-rush current and energy saving of the single-phase induction motor used in air-conditioner. It can be obtained that proposed system is low cost and small size as compared with other controller. Experiments are focused on a capacitor starting single-phase induction motor. The optimal power saving and in-rush current limiting by phase angle control are verified by experimental results. Also, auxiliary winding was controlled by electronic starting switch.

  • We are developing Adaptive Optics (AO) system for astronomical use. The He-Ne laser works as an artificial light source. The tip-tilt correction servo is added to our AO system. The tip-tilt term, among the Zernike terms, is the biggest contributor of wavefront deformation caused by atmospheric turbulence at small telescopes. The tip-tilt correction servo consists of a Piezo tip-tilt platform with a mirror, a quadrant photodiode as a tip-tilt sensor, and controllers. The Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor measures the residual wavefront errors and they are corrected by the MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) deformable mirror. The MEMS deformable mirror allows the compact size at low cost compare to adaptive secondary mirror and other deformable mirrors. As the frame rates of the MEMS deformable mirror is about tens of kHz, the frame rates of the detector in wavefront sensor is the bottleneck of the wavefront correction speed. For faster performance, we replaced a CCD which provides frame rates only 70 Hz with a CMOS with frame rates up to 450 Hz.

  • This paper proposes a new bidirectional DC-DC converter with high efficiency. The proposed converter is composed of a flyback and a tapped-inductor boost converter to satisfy extreme operating conditions with low cost. The outputs are connected in series to achieve a high-voltage step-up. In the reverse direction, the proposed converter has an extreme step-down voltage. In this study, the proposed converter was employed with a 100 W hardware prototype. To design the controller, a small-signal transfer function of the proposed converter is derived. For PV power conditioning systems, a maximum power point tracking method is applied with perturb and observe method. To verify the operation of the bidirectional power flow, the current controller is applied. All of the controllers are employed with a digital signal processor.
