폴리이미드 표면에서의 고속 TN 셀의 응답 특성 (Response Characteristics of Fast TN Cell on a Polyimide Surface)

  • We investigated response characteristics of twisted nematic (TN) cell with different nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) and cell gap d on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface. High transmittance and fast response time of the TN cell on the rubbed PI surface were achieved by using high birefringence (${\Delta}n$) and low cell gap d. The response time of TN cell on the rubbed PI surface was measured 5.1 ms. The transmittance and response time of the TN cell on the rubbed PI surface decreased with decreasing ${\Delta}nd$.

  • The field sequential liquid crystal display (FSLCD) does not need a color filter so that it is suitable for high resolution display. However, FSLCD has a drawback which requires a fast response time of sub-5 ms. We have studied the FSLCD with electrically controlled birefringence (ECB) mode. The ECB mode exhibits fast response time, high transmittance, low operating voltage and adequate viewing angle with a help of optical compensation films. In this paper, we present electro-optic characteristics of the ECB mode using a discotic film.

  • 본 연구는 내열성, 저광학손실 광도파로용 고분자재료를 합성하고 그 물성을 조사한 것이다. 열안정성을 높이고 광학손실을 줄이기 위한 pentafluorophenylmaleimide와 복굴절률을 낮추기 위한 두가지 methacrylate 유도체와 가교제 역할을 하는 glycidylmethacrylate를 삼원 공중합하여 광가교가 가능한 poly(maleimide-co-methacrylate)를 합성하였다. 합성된 고분자들은 높은 열안정성을 나타내었고, 열처리에 의해서 가교가 됨을 확인하였다. 고분자의 굴절율은 공중합 비율에 의해서 조절가능하였고, 1.45~l.49 범위의 고분자가 합성되었다. 복굴절은$6{ imes}10^{-4}$ ~ $1{ imes}10^{-4}$ 범위의 낮은 값을 나타내었다. 이 고분자와 광개시제를 사용하여 접촉 인쇄 방식에 의한 노광과 습식 현상을 통해 깨끗한 광도파로 패턴을 얻을 수 있었다.

High Speed Response Time of Nematic Liquid Crystal Mixtures for LCD Monitor and TV Applications

  • The most important parameter for TV application of LCD is a fast switching time for the display of moving image. To achieve faster switching time, the novel LC single materials with large dielectric anisotropies ($16{\sim}20$), high clearing temperatures ($195.5{\sim}237.4^{\circ}C$), broad nematic ranges (up to 169.9 $^{\circ}C$) and high birefringence ($0.254{\sim}0.2200$) were developed. KUR-series LC mixtures blended these single materials having significantly higher clearing temperatures and dielectric anisotropy values compared with conventional LC mixture. Especially, their clearing temperatures are $10{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ higher than their host mixture. These LC mixtures showing about lOms of high-speed switching time in Tv/Monitor of TFT LCD, is short enough to be addressed in a single time frame of 60Hz (16.7 ms). The threshold voltage $V_{th}$ was low enough to operate at a driving voltage of 5 V. The VHR values were found to be high enough for TFT-LCD in wide temperature range. Our novel LC mixtures are suitable materials for the inclusion in to LC mixtures for TV application of TN-LCD

Optical Characterizations of $LiNbO_{3}$ Single Crystals Doped with $MgO/TiO_{2}$

  • The applicability of $LiNbO_{3}$ as a substrate for fabrication of Ti-indiffused waveguide electro-optic devices is limited. Ti diffuses comparatively in congruently melting $LiNbO_{3}$; the Curie temperature of this material is too low to permit diffusion temperatures much above $1100^{\circ}C$ without the necessity of re-poling the crystal. Both of hese difficulties could be eliminated by incorporating certain dopants in $LiNbO_{3}$. Crystals of $LiNbO_{3}$ doped with Ti and Mg were grown and evaluated. The electroptic coefficients and birefringence of $LiNbO_{3}$ doped crystals were measured at ${\lambda}=.6328$ and $1.32\;$\mu{m}$. Curie temperatures were measured. The Curie temperature of both undoped and Ti-doped $LiNbO_{3}$ was $1130^{\circ}C$; that for Mg-doped $LiNbO_{3}$ was $30^{\circ}$ higher. From these data, a composition for the crystals was estimated. Thermogravimetric data confirmed this estimate and showed that the composition of Mg : $LiNbO_{3}$ was $49.3{\pm}0.2mole%\;Li_{2}O$ ; the composition of the undoped and Ti : $LiNbO_{3}$ samples was $48.6{\pm}0.2mole%$. Diffusion of Ti into both Mg-doped and Ti-doped $LiNbO_{3}$ crystals was studied as a function of $Li/NbO_{3}$ ratio and temperature.

일축 연신 조건에 따른 Poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) 배향에 관한 연구 (Effect of Uniaxial Drawing Conditions on the Orientation of Poly (ethylene 2,6- naphthalate))

  • 연신온도, 연신속도, 연신비 등 연신 조건에 따른 poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN)의 배향상태 변화를 살펴보았다. 연신온도가 낮을수록 연신속도가 빠를수록 연신비에 따라 큰 복굴절 값을 보이며 FT-IR ATR dichroism 방법으로 구한 배향 특성도 복굴절의 실험결과를 뒷받침하였다. PEN을 $120^{\circ}C$에서 연신하면 무정형사슬 배향함수 ($f_a$)가 연신속도가 빠를수록 높은 값을 갖지만 $141^{\circ}C$에서 연신하면 반대로 연신속도가 빠를수록 낮은 값을 갖게 된다. 이러한 경향은 결정화 속도와 사슬 이완속도와의 관계로부터 설명이 가능하다. X-선 회절 실험 결과로부터 PEN의 naphthalene ring 구조가 필름표면에 평행하게 배열됨을 확인할 수 있었다.

Polarization Converting Waveguide Devices Incorporating UV-curable Reactive Mesogen

  • Reactive mesogen (RM) is an organic liquid crystal molecule that can be self-aligned to have an optic axis of birefringence when coated over a polyimide alignment film. A free-standing optical wave-plate film consisting of RM and low-loss optical polymers was fabricated in this work, and the film was inserted across the polymer waveguide to form an integrated optical polarization converter. For convenient evaluation of the polarization converters, a waveguide polarizer and analyzer were fabricated in series. The polarization conversion efficiency was measured to be 25 dB for the wavelength range from 1520 to 1580 nm. The wave plate exhibited a temperature-dependent retardation of $4.5^{\circ}$ for a temperature change from 25 to $100^{\circ}C$.

  • In recent years, Anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) has become popular and attractive materials. It can be easily fabricated and self-organized pore structures. It has been widely used as a biosensor membrane, photonic crystal for optical circuit and template for nanotube growth etc. In previous papers, the theory was developed that AAO shows anisotropic optical properties, since it has anisotropic structure with numerous cylindrical pores. It gives rise to the anisotropy of the refractive index called as birefringence. It can be used as conventional polarizing elements with high efficiency and low cost. Therefore, we would like to compare the theory and experimental results in this study. One method which can measure effective refractive index of thin film is the prism coupling technique. It can give accurate results fast and simply. Furthermore, we can also measure separately the refractive index with different polarization using polarization of the laser (TE mode and TM mode). We calculated the effective refractive index with effective medium approximations (EMAs) by pore size in the SEM image. EMAs are physical models that describe the macroscopic system as the homogeneous and typical method of all mean field theories.

Current-induced Phase Demodulation Using a PWM Sampling for a Fiber-optic CT

  • In this work, we used PWM sampling for demodulation of a fiber-optic interferometric current transformer. The interference signal from a fiber-optic CT is sampled with PWM triggers that produce a 90-degree phase difference between two consecutively sampled signals. The current-induced phase is extracted by applying an arctangent demodulation and a phase unwrapping algorithm to the sampled signals. From experiments using the proposed demodulation, we obtained phase measurement accuracy and a linearity error, in AC current measurements, of ~2.35 mrad and 0.18%, respectively. The accuracy of the proposed method was compared with that of a lock-in amplifier demodulation, which showed only 0.36% difference. To compare the birefringence effects of different fiber-optic sensor coils, a flint glass fiber and a standard single-mode fiber were used under the same conditions. The flint glass fiber coil with a Faraday rotator mirror showed the best performance. Because of the simple hardware structure and signal processing, the proposed demodulation would be suitable for low-cost over-current monitoring in high voltage power systems.
