Three anode configurations of six-jet, cone-jet and cylindrical-jet are tested for their analytical performance under power mode operation. The effect of pressure, power and gas flow rate on atomic absorption signals have been studied. The increase of atomic absorption signal of sample element is observed at a fixed pressure in all configurations as the gas flow rate increase up to 300-600 seem, and as the power dissipated in the glow discharge cell increase. The lower the pressure is in the glow discharge cell at a fixed discharge power and argon flow rate, the greater the absorbance of sample element is. The optimum conditions are taken from these data and a calibration curve of Cu in low-alloy steel sample is obtained. In this calibration curve, six-jet configuration shows the best analytical results varies as the sample element.
The effects of the heat input and preheat/interpass temperatures on the tensile strength and impact toughness of multipass welded weld metal were investigated and interpreted in terms of the recovery of the alloying elements and microstructure. Increases in both the heat input and preheat/interpass temperatures decreased the tensile strength of the weld metal. A lower recovery of alloying elements, especially Mn and Si, and smaller area fraction of acicular ferrite in the weld metal were observed in higher heat input welding, resulting in a lower tensile strength. In contrast, only a microstructure difference was observed at a higher preheat/interpass temperature. The impact toughness of the weld metal gradually increased with an increase in the heat input because of the lower tensile strength. However, it decreased again when the heat input was larger than 45 kJ/cm because of the much smaller area fraction of acicular ferrite. No effect of the preheat/interpass temperature on the impact toughness was observed. The formation of a weld metal heat-affect zone showed little effect on the impact toughness of the weld metal in this experiment.
Presented are the formation of iron oxide layers on evaporator tubes in an actual fossil power plant operated under all volatile treatment (AVT) condition and an experimental simulation of iron oxide formation in the presence of ferrous and ferric ions. After actual operations for 12781 and 36326 hr in the power plant, two iron oxide layers of magnetite on the evaporator tubes were found: a continuous inner layer and a porous outer layer. The experimental simulation (i.e., artificial corrosion in the presence of ferrous and ferric ions at 100 ppm level for 100 hr) reveals that ferrous ions turn the continuous inner oxide layer on tube metal to cracks and pores, while ferric ions facilitate the production of porous outer oxide layer consisting of large crystallites. Based on a comparison of the oxide layers produced in the experimental simulation with those observed on the actually used tubes, we propose possible routes for oxid layer formation schematically. In addition, the limits of the proposed corrosion routes are discussed in detail.

In relation to a non-destructive evaluation of irradiation damage of micro-structure of interstitial, void and dislocation, the changes in the hysteresis loop and Barkhausen noise amplitude and the harmonics frequency due to neutron irradiation were measured and evaluated. The Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel of reactor pressure vessel was irradiated to a neutron fluence of $2.3\times10^{19}n/cm^2$$(E\ge1MeV)$ at $288^{\circ}C.$The saturation magnetization of neutron irradiated metal did not change. Neutron irradiation caused the coercivity to increase, whereas susceptibility to decrease. The amplitude of Barkhausen noise parameters associated with the domain wall motion were decreased by neutron irradiation. The spectrum of Barkhausen noise was analyzed with an applied frequency of 4Hz and 8Hz, and a sampling time of 50 $\mu$ sec and 20 $\mu$ sec. The harmonic frequency of Joule effect shows 4Hz, 8Hz, 12Hz and 16Hz reflected from an unirradiated specimen. On the contrary, the harmonic frequency disappeared for the irradiated specimen. Harmonic frequency of induced voltage of sinusoidal magnetic field And Spectrum of Barkhausen noise on material is determined.
High Strength low alloy steels containing various levels of C, Nb and Mn were used and for each of which, a simulated double thermal cycle was applied with the same first peak temperature and different second peak temperatures to produce HAZ microstructure corresponding to multi-pass weld. Effect of double cycle second temperature on the microstructure was observed and compared with single cycle results obtained from previous works, it was found that the percentage of martensite austenite constituent (MA) increases by Nb addition for all steels with the same Mn content and the increase in Mn content at the same Nb content shows an increase in MA area fraction as well. MA area fraction obtained for the double cycle is larger than that obtained for the single cycle for all steels used which imply that MA will have great role in the brittle fracture initiation for double cycle and the inter-pass temperature should be controlled for medium and high-carbon Mn steel to avoid large area fraction of MA. The beneficial effects of Niobium obtained in single pass weld were not observed for the double cycle or multi pass welds.
In this study, shear fracture specimens are designed using finite element analyses for the characterization of ductile fracture criteria of metal sheets. Many recently suggested ductile fracture criteria require experimental fracture data at the shear stress states in the model parameter identification. However, it is challenging to maintain shear stress states in tension-based specimens from the initial yield to the final fracture, and the loading path can be different for the different materials even with the same shear specimen geometries. To account for this issue, two different shear fracture specimens for low ductility/high ductility metal sheets are designed using the sensitivity tests conducted by finite element simulations. Priorly mechanical properties including the Hosford-Coulomb fracture criterion of the aluminum alloy 7075-T6 and DP590 steel sheets are used in the simulations. The results show that shear stress states are well-maintained until the fracture at the fracture initiation points by optimizing the notch geometries of the shear fracture specimens.

Research into the selection of suitable materials and the development of fast processing methods for press die manufacturing is absolutely necessary to reduce the production time and cost. In particular, knowledge of its heat properties must be considered whendeveloping a long press die. Generally, as the main component materials of press dies, Cr, W low alloy tool steel, high carbon-high chrome steel, high speed steel, etc., are used as thetooling steel for the cold die. Machine tools and wire-cut electric discharge machining are mainly used for processing the press die parts. There are many differences in the machining time and life cycle of die parts depending on the machining process. The parts produced by milling and grinding have a high manufacturing time and cost with a long life cycle, while thosemade by milling and wire-cut discharge machining have areduced manufacturing time and cost, whereastheir die life cycle is reduced. Therefore, in this study, we will discuss amethod of improving the life cycle of the die parts by using heat treatment as a processing method that reduces the manufacturing time and cost. SEM, EDS analysis and the surface roughness analysis of the surface and center of the workpiece are used for analyzing the specimens produced by three machining methods, viz. milling - grinding, milling - wire cut discharge, and milling - wire cut discharge - heat treatment. A method of making die parts having the same life cycle as those produced by milling - grinding is developed with the milling - wire cut discharge - high temperature tempering method.

$Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites are fabricated by squeeze infiltration method. From the misconstructive of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites fabricated by squeeze infiltration method, uniform distribution of reinforcements and good bondings are found. Hardness value of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites increases linearly with the volume fraction of reinforcement because SiC whisker and $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ fiber have an outstanding hardness. Optimal aging conditions are obtained by examining the hardness of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites with different aging time. Tensile properties such as Young's modulus and ultimate tensile strength are improved up to 30% and 40% by the addition of reinforcements, respectively. Failure mode of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites is ductile on microstructural level. Through the abrasive wear test and wear surface analysis, wear behaviour and mechanism of 6061 aluminum and $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites are characterized under various testing conditions. The addition of SiC whisker to $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ composites gives rise to improvement of the wear resistance. The wear resistance of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites is superior to that of Al/SiC composites. The wear mechanism of aluminum alloy is mainly abrasive wear at low speed range and adhesive and melt wear at high speed range. In contrast, that of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites is abrasive wear at all speed range, but severe wear when counter material is stainless steel. As the testing temperature increases, wear loss of aluminum alloy decreases because the matrix is getting more ductile, but that of $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites is hardly varied. Oil lubricant is more effective to reduce the wear loss of aluminum alloy and $Al/SiC/Al_{2}O_{3}$ hybrid composites at high speed range.
ElectroSlag Strip Overlaying (ESSO) process has been around since 1970. ESSO process had limited acceptance due to a few problems associated with the use of this process in its very early stage. Limited knowledge and, most significantly, poor quality of the equipment and welding flux gave the ESSO process a bad name. However, this process is well accepted today and used in North America, Europe and Japan. The ESSO process provides low dilution overlays at high deposition rates, excellent and consistent deposit chemistry with excellent surface quality, and virtually no defects. Capitan has taken this process one step further through extensive research and development of the process itself as well as the equipment. The improvement brought to the process warranted the issuance in May 2000 of an US patent. This study demonstrates the feasibility of this process with immediate positive production results. The main achievements of this work are as follows: $\textbullet$ Development of six various strip-flux combinations on three different base materials: carbon steel, $\frac{1}{4}$ Cr/.5 Mo and 2 $\frac{1}{4}$ Cr/l Mo, fully tested with: penetrant, ultrasound, bends, hardness, overlay chemistry, corrosion and hydrogen disbonding. $\textbullet$ 12" dia. 90 hot formed elbows from straight pipe electroslag overlayed with "1 layer" and "2 layer" Alloy 625 $\textbullet$ a very unique development of miniaturized overlaying equipment able to perform overlay in pipe with diameters as low as 10" (254 mm). This development has large applications in the field of offshore, petrochemical, refining, pulp and paper and power generation industries. The aftermath of this development was its immediate acceptance by major end users with the completion of four projects of overlayed pipe in the USA and Far East Asia.
The recovery activation energy, the order of reaction and the recovery rate constant were detemined by isochronal and isothermal annealing treatment to investigate the recovery behaviors of neutron irradiated Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steels$(fluence: 2.3\times10^{19}ncm^{-2}, 553K, E\geq1.0 MeV)$. Vickers microhardness tests were conducted to trace the recovery behavior after heat treatments. The results were analyzed in terms of recovery stages, behavior of responsible defects and recovery kinetics. It was shown that recovery occurred through two annealing stages(stage I : 703-753K, stage n : 813-873K) with re$\infty$very activation energies of 2.5 eV and 2.93 eV for each stage I and n, respectively. From the comparison of unirradiated and irradiated isochronal anneal curves, a radiation anneal hardening(RAH) peak was identified at around 813K. Most of recovery have occurred during about 120 min irrespective of isothermal annealing temperatures of 743K and 833K. Recovery rate constants were determined to be $3.4\times10^{-4}min^{-1} and 7.1\times10^{-4}min^{-1}$ for stage I and II, respectively. The order of reaction was about 2 for both recovery stages. Comparing the obtained data with those of previously reported results on neutron irradiated Mn- Mo- Ni steels, the thermal recovery behavior of the present material seems to occur by the dissociation of point defect clusters formed during irradiation, and by the recombination process of self-interstitials and vacancies from dissociated vacancy clusters.
