  • The determination of lot sizes in prevailing inventory problems has been made with constant safety stock over the planning horizon. But, it is more profitable to accommodate the safety stock to dynamically fluctuating demands. The objective of this paper is to study the method to determine the dynamic safety stock and lot sizing rules depending on the actual customer demands. The last period or highly fluctuating period during the consumption of a lot is the most critical one to stock-out. It means that such periods must be given more attentions. Some dynamic methods to control safety stock are proposed with viewpoints of the time, quantity, and time-quantity. Simulation results show that lot sizing methods with dynamic safety stock reduce about 10% of average total cost compared to those with constant safety stock.

  • This paper examines the influence of the uncertainty in demand and lead time on the relative performances of ten well-known single stage lot-sizing rules in a rolling schedule environment. Two other factors, coefficient of variation and time between orders, which may affect the performances of the rules are also considered. To compare the rules under an identical condition, 100% service level is set by introducing safety stocks. The effects of various factor levels are checked statistically by the pairwise t-test and the results show that the uncertainty of the environment has a strong influence on the performance of the rules.

  • This paper introduces a case study for efficient generation of production schedules in a tube manufacturing system. The considered scheduling problem consists of two sub problems : lot sizing for a job and Job sequencing. Since these problems require simulation optimization in which the performance measures are obtained by simulation execution, the trade-off between solution quality and computation time is an important issue. In this study, the optimal lot size for every product type is determined from simulation experiments. Then, target production quantity for each product type is transformed to several jobs such that a Job consists of determined lot size. To obtain the good solution for a Job sequence in a reasonable time, a number of alternatives are generated from heuristic rules developed by intuition and analysis of the considered system, and a job sequence is selected from simulation experiments.

  • In this article, a simulation model of a microwave oven assembly line is developed to identify system parameters to improve the system performances such as work-in-process inventories, production lead time, mean earliness, mean tardiness and in-time completion rate. System parameters investigated include dispatching rules, lot sizing, setup time reduction, demand increase, productivity improvement, production scheduling, hardware characteristics, etc. The model has been developed using SIMAN simulation language which has been demonstrated to be a powerful tool to simulate complex manufacturing systems. We have suggested the results obtained to improve the system performances of an existing production line.
