This study is to estimate the spatial distribution of soil loss using the land use data produced from QuickBird satellite imagery. For a small agricultural watershed (1.16 $km^2$) located in the upstream of Gyeongan-cheon watershed, a precise agricultural land use map were prepared using QuickBird satellite image of April 5 of 2003. RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) was adopted for soil loss estimation. The data (DEM, soil and land use) for the RUSLE were prepared for 5 m and 30 m spatial resolution. The results were compared with each other and the result of 30 m Landsat land use data.
The transmission loss coefficient is very important acoustic property in parallel with absorption and acoustic impedance categorizing the acoustical materials, which can control the acoustical problems. At the same time, the transmission loss coefficient is a key parameter to choose the optimum material for the analysis of acoustical characteristics of material using SEA(Statistical Energy Analysis). In this paper, the transmission loss coefficient measurement system using 4-microphone impedance tube is proposed, based on the idea calculating the full transfer matrix of the acoustical sample to test. The theoretical background and measurement system are introduced, and finally the measurement results are verified.
Network reconfiguration in distribution systems is realized by changing the status of sectionalizing switches, and is usually done for loss reduction of load balancing in the system. This paper presents an effective heuristic based switching scheme to solve the distribution feeder loss reduction problem. The proposed algorithm consists of two parts. One is to set up a decision tree to represent the various switching operations available. Another is to apply a proposed technique called cyclic best first search. the proposed algorithm identify the most effective the set of switch status configuration of distribution system for loss reduction. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithm, numerical calculations are carried out the 32, 69 bus system models.
The use of remotely sensed data and geographic information system (GIS) to develop conservation-oriented watershed management strategies on Imha Dam, Korea, is presented. The change of land use for study area was analyzed using multi-temporal Landsat imagery. A soil loss model was executed within a GIS environment to evaluate watershed management strategies in terms of soil loss. In general, remotely sensed data provide efficient means of generating the input data required for the soil loss model. Also, GIS allowed for easy assessment of the relative erosion hazard over the watershed under the different land use change options. The soil loss model predicted substantial declines in soil loss under conservation-oriented land management compared to current land management for Imha Dam. The results of this study indicate that soil loss potential (5,782,829 ton/yr) on Imha Dam in 2003 is approximately 1.27 times higher than that (4,557,151 ton/yr) in 1989. This study represents the first attempt in the application of GIS technology to watershed conservation planning for Imha Dam. The procedures developed will contribute to the evolution of a decision support system to guide the land planning and dam management in Imha Dam.
Numerical simulations have been performed to investigate tip clearance effect on through-flow and performance of a centrifugal compressor which has the same configuration of impeller with six different tip clearances. Secondary flow and loss distribution have been surveyed to understand the flow mechanism due to the tip clearance. Tip leakage flow strongly interacts with mainstream flow and considerably changes the secondary flow and the loss distribution inside the impeller passage. A method has been described to quantitatively estimate the tip clearance effect on the performance drop and the efficiency drop. The tip clearance has caused specific work reduction and additional entropy generation. The former, which is called inviscid loss, is independent of any internal loss and the latter, which is called viscous loss, is dependent on every loss in the flow passage. Two components equally affected the performance drop as the tip clearances were small, while the efficiency drop was influenced by the viscous component alone. The additional entropy generation was modeled with all the kinetic energy of the tip leakage flow. Therefore, the present paper can provide how to quantitatively estimate the tip clearance effect on the performance and efficiency.
This study estimated experimentally the loss distribution caused by magnetic friction in magnetic parts of a superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFES) to obtain information for the design of high efficiency SFES. Through the spin down experiment using the manufactured vertical shaft type SFES with a journal type superconductor magnetic bearing (SMB), the coefficients of friction by the SMB, the stator core of permanent magnet synchronous motor/generator (PMSM/G), and the leakage flux of the metal parts were calculated. The coefficients of friction by the stator core of PMSM/G in case of using Si-steel and an amorphous core were calculated. The energy loss by magnetic friction in the stator core of PMSM/G was much larger than that in the other parts. The level of friction loss could be reduced dramatically using an amorphous core. Energy loss by the leakage magnetic field was small. On the other hand, the energy loss could be increased under other conditions according to the type of metal nearby the leakage magnetic fields. In manufactured SFES, the rotational loss by the amorphous core was approximately 2 times the loss of the superconductor and leakage. Moreover, the rotational loss by the Si-steel core is approximately 3~3.5 times the loss of superconductor and leakage.
This paper presents a prestress-loss monitoring technique for prestressed concrete (PSC) girder structures that uses a vibration-based system identification method. First, the theoretical backgrounds of the prestress-loss monitoring technique and the system identification technique are presented. Second, vibration tests are performed on a lab-scaled PSC girder for which the modal parameter was measured for several prestress-force cases. A numerical modal analysis is performed by using an initial finite element (FE) model from the geometric, material, and boundary conditions of the lab-scaled PSC girder. Third, a vibration-based system identification is performed to update the FE model by identifying structural parameters since the natural frequency of the FE model became identical to the experimental results. Finally, the feasibility of the prestress-loss monitoring technique is evaluated for the PSC girder model by using the experimentally measured natural frequency and numerically identified natural frequency for several prestress-force cases.
