  • We introduced the methodologies used to construct the longitudinal weights and cross-sectional weight that are required for the analysis of Korea Youth Panel Survey. To analyze the longitudinal dynamic change of the population, we derived the longitudinal weight through nonresponse adjustment based on logistic regression and post-stratification. Cross-sectional weights that are necessary to produce an asymptotically unbiased estimator of the population parameter were constructed through simple nonresponse adjustment based on overall response rate and post-stratification.

Estimation of Genetic Parameters from Longitudinal Records of Body Weight of Berkshire Pigs

  • Direct and maternal genetic heritabilities and their correlations with body weight at 5 stages in the life span of purebred Berkshire pigs, from birth to harvest, were estimated to scrutinize body weight development with the records for 5,088 purebred Berkshire pigs in a Korean farm, using the REML based on an animal model. Body weights were measured at birth (Birth), at weaning (Weaning: mean 22.9 d), at the beginning of a performance test (On: mean 72.7 d), at the end of a performance test (Off: mean 152.4 d), and at harvest (Finish: mean 174.3 d). Ordinary polynomials and Legendre with order 1, 2, and 3 were adopted to adjust body weight with age in the multivariate animal models. Legendre with order 3 fitted best concerning prediction error deviation (PED) and yielded the lowest AIC for multivariate analysis of longitudinal body weights. Direct genetic correlations between body weight at Birth and body weight at Weaning, On, Off, and Finish were 0.48, 0.36, 0.10, and 0.10, respectively. The estimated maternal genetic correlations of body weight at Finish with body weight at Birth, Weaning, On, and Off were 0.39, 0.49, 0.65, and 0.90, respectively. Direct genetic heritabilities progressively increased from birth to harvest and were 0.09, 0.11, 0.20, 0.31, and 0.43 for body weight at Birth, Weaning, On, Off, and Finish, respectively. Maternal genetic heritabilities generally decreased and were 0.26, 0.34, 0.15, 0.10, and 0.10 for body weight at Birth, Weaning, On, Off, and Finish, respectively. As pigs age, maternal genetic effects on growth are reduced and pigs begin to rely more on the expression of their own genes. Although maternal genetic effects on body weight may not be large, they are sustained through life.

Effects of Calcium, Vitamin D and Egg Yolk Peptide Treatment on the Retardation of Longitudinal Bone Growth Induced by Low-Calcium Diets (저칼슘 식이로 유발한 성장 저하 흰쥐에 대한 칼슘, 비타민 D 및 난황 펩타이드의 투여가 장골 길이 성장에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : Egg yolk is composed of various important chemical substances for human health. A calcium shortage causes the growth retardation on the body growth. In this study, we examined the therapeutic effects of calcium, vitamin D and egg yolk peptide (EYP) treatment on the retardation of the longitudinal bone growth induced by low-calcium diet in adolescent rats. Methods : Low calcium diets were administrated for 15 days. During the last five days, calcium and/or vitamin D and/or EYP were administrated. The body weights, longitudinal bone growth rates, the heights of growth plates, and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2 and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 expressions were measured using histochemical analysis. Results : Low calcium diets caused the significant reduction in body weight gains and the longitudinal bone growth. The heights of growth plates and the expressions of BMP-2 and IGF-1 showed the impairment of body growth as well. Calcium and/or vitamin D administration could not significantly increase the longitudinal bone growth. However, calcium, vitamin D, and EYP administration significantly increased the bone growth, the growth plate height, and BMP-2 and IGF-1 expressions. Conclusions : These results suggest that EYP enhances the longitudinal bone growth in the calcium and/or vitamin D deficiency and it could be a promising agent for the treatment of children suffering from malnutrition.

Estimation of Weight Parameters for Small Fishing Vessels in Accordance with Loading Conditions (소형 어선의 재화상태를 고려한 중량 정보 추정 기법)

  • This study proposed estimation methods for weight and center of gravity of small fishing vessels. Weights loaded on small fishing vessels were divided into fixed weights such as crew, fishing gear, and variable weights such as fuel, fresh water, provision, bait, and fish. Based on statistical analyses with weight data of several small fishing vessels, weight, longitudinal center of gravity (LCG), vertical center of gravity (KG) of each item were represented as linear functions of vessel gross tonnage. In addition, weighting factors of variable weights were added on estimation formulas in accordance with vessel loading conditions, e.g. full load departure condition. Estimation methods were verified using actual small fishing vessel data.

A study on the longitudinal physique of children-centered on sampling physique group and general physique group (아동체격의 종단적 연구)

  • In order to secure reliable values of measurement of the data about children's longitudinal develop- ment and physique examination and their growth states for 6 years from first grade through sixth grade in elementary school was collected based on their school health records. A sample physique group and general physique group were investigated and compared classified into girls and boys. The results are as follows; (1) Whe the difference of physiques in the sample group and general group is compared, boys and girls show little difference in height but boys differ greatly in weight and sitting-height but girls do in weight, girth of chest and sitting-height between 8 and 11 years old. (2) In the verification of the two groups; the body height in 7 years old show a significant difference at the P<0.5 level and their weights do at 7.8 and 11 years old. Girls' sitting-height at 11 years old shows a significant difference at the P<0.5 level. In the light of the above results because possibility of instrumental error in measurement is high between the two groups and also in case of the comparison of past sample data, the physique examination used in every school seems to be in need of reconsideration to reduce errors in measurement.

Development of Automatic Chicken Cutting Machine

  • Purpose: Chicken cutting is done manually, which is inefficient, unhygienic, and carries a high accident risk during processing. This study develops and evaluates an automatic chicken cutting machine that suits small-scale workplaces. Methods: This study developed an automatic chicken cutting machine equipped with four traverse blades and two longitudinal blades. An experiment was conducted with various blade rotating speeds and tray feed rates to evaluate the machine's performance. The chicken loss rate and chicken piece weights were measured to calculate the coefficient of variation (CV), thereby determining processing uniformity. Results: The optimal cutting conditions with the smallest chicken loss rate were 0.05 m/s tray feed speed and 18.8 m/s and 16.4 m/s for the traverse and longitudinal blades, respectively. The processing ran at 55.3 chickens per hour and the chicken pieces were more uniform when using the device than for hand-work processed pieces. Conclusions: The loss rate increased in proportion to the cutting-blade rotation speed due to the high cutting rate in meat. The loss rate also increased as the tray feed speed slowed because the cutting blade pushed the chicken meat. The tray feed speed should be increased to improve the amount processed per hour.

A Longitudinal Study on the Causal Association Between Smoking and Depression

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to analyze the causal relationship between smoking and depression using longitudinal data. Methods: Two waves of the Korea Welfare Panel collected in 2006 and 2007 were used. The sample consisted of 14 426 in 2006 and 13 052 in 2007 who were aged 20 and older. Smoking was measured by smoking amount (none/$\geq$ two packs). Depression was defined when the summated CESD (center for epidemiological studies depression)-11 score was greater than or equal to 16. The causal relationship between smoking and depression was tested using logistic regression. In order to test the causal effect of smoking on depression, depression at year 2 was regressed on smoking status at year 1 only using the sample without depression at year 1. Likewise, smoking status at year 2 was regressed on depression at year 1 only using those who were not smoking at year 1 in order to test the causal effect of depression on smoking. The statistical package used was Stata 10.0. Sampling weights were applied to obtain the population estimation. Results: The logistic regression testing for the causal relationship between smoking and depression showed that smoking at year 1 was significantly related to depression at year 2. Smoking amounts associated with depression were different among age groups. On the other hand, the results from the logistic regression testing for the opposite direction of the relationship between smoking and depression found no significant association regardless of age group. Conclusions: The study results showed some evidence that smoking caused depression but not the other way around.

A comprehensive longitudinal study of gut microbiota dynamic changes in laying hens at four growth stages prior to egg production

  • Objective: The poultry industry is a primary source of animal protein worldwide. The gut microbiota of poultry birds, such as chickens and ducks, is critical in maintaining their health, growth, and productivity. This study aimed to identify longitudinal changes in the gut microbiota of laying hens from birth to the pre-laying stage. Methods: From a total of 80 Hy-Line Brown laying hens, birds were selected based on weight at equal intervals to collect feces (n = 20 per growth) and ileal contents (n = 10 per growth) for each growth stage (days 10, 21, 58, and 101). The V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene were amplified after extracting DNA from feces and ileal contents. Amplicon sequencing was performed using Illumina, followed by analysis. Results: Microbial diversity increased with growth stages, regardless of sampling sites. Microbial community analysis indicated that Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla in the feces and ileal. The abundance of Lactobacillus was highest on day 10, and that of Escherichia-shigella was higher on day 21 than those at the other stages at the genus level (for the feces and ileal contents; p<0.05). Furthermore, Turicibacter was the most abundant genus after changing feed (for the feces and ileal contents; p<0.05). The fecal Ruminococcus torques and ileal Lysinibacillus were negatively correlated with the body weights of chickens (p<0.05). Conclusion: The gut microbiota of laying hens changes during the four growth stages, and interactions between microbiota and feed may be present. Our findings provide valuable data for understanding the gut microbiota of laying hens at various growth stages and future applied studies.

Constructing Panel Data Using Repeated Cross-sectional Survey Data : A Case of Farm Household Survey and Its Analysis (반복횡단면자료의 패널화에 대한 연구: 농가경제조사의 경우)

  • This study shows the results of constructing panel data using Farm Household survey and presents some examples of empirical application. This study shows that ex post constructed panel data using repeated cross-sectional survey can be used in various dynamic analyses. This paper also shows that the well known difficult problem of longitudinal weights can be easily solved by using the existing cross-sectional weights in original cross-section data. Based on these results, we propose that the National Statistical Office not only try to construct panel data, but also construct panel data by using existing repeated cross-section data. The benefits of this approach seems to be very big in establishment survey.

Analysis of Recurrent Gap Time Data with a Binary Time-Varying Covariate

  • Recurrent gap times are analyzed with diverse methods under several assumptions such as a marginal model or a frailty model. Several resampling techniques have been recently suggested to estimate the covariate effect; however, these approaches can be applied with a time-fixed covariate. According to simulation results, these methods result in biased estimates for a time-varying covariate which is often observed in a longitudinal study. In this paper, we extend a resampling method by incorporating new weights and sampling scheme. Simulation studies are performed to compare the suggested method with previous resampling methods. The proposed method is applied to estimate the effect of an educational program on traffic conviction data where a program participation occurs in the middle of the study.
