This study was designed to investigate the content of health behavior and to examine factors determining health behavior of nursing students(n=159) in relation to sociodemographic and cognitive variables. Cognitive variables were categorized into saliency of health, susceptibility to illness, and health locus of control. Data analysis prodecure included factor analysis and stepwise multivariate regressions using health behavior as dependent variables. Analysis showed; 1. As a whole, nursing students showed a tendency of lack in positive health behavior, especially in diet-related health behavior. 2. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the factors such as grade, saliency of health, and birth place were to be independently and significantly associated with health behavior: Upper grade students, high level of saliency, urban-born students tend to take health behavior positively. 3. The most influential factor among them was grade, but cognitive inspite of stereotype, poorly impact on health behavior with the exception health. We can guess the effect of education indirectively from these findindgs, but longitudinal studies need to consider the direct effect of education. The results also indicate that the respondents should be encouraged to take health behavior positively. The studies including more other cognitive variables would be conducted for the nursing students in relation to health behavior.
Purpose: The principal objective of this study was to assess the topics and research methods of smoking-related research and to suggest future research directions. Methods: The subjects of this study were smoking research articles supported by the National Health Promotion Funds from 1998 to 2007. A total of 41 articles were selected and analyzed from 1999 to 2005 using the frameworks such as topics, subjects contents, subjects, research field, and research design. Results: The most frequent topic of smoking-related research was the development & evaluation of educational programs for smoking prevention and smoking cessation (34.1%). The majority of the research subjects were adults (42.2%) and adolescents (35.9%). 31.7% of the total research researches was conducted at the nationwide population level. The most popular research design was the descriptive study (36.6%) in the non-experimental studies and nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design(19.5%) in the experimental study studies. Conclusion: The topics of smoking research should be planned under governmental strategies for decreasing to a 30% reduction in of smoking rates, as established in the 2010 Health Plan. With regard to the methodological aspects, longitudinal and nationwide research was first required so that we could plan an evidence-based program for smoking prevention and smoking cessation.
Background: The expression of the proto-oncogene c-fos in spinal cord neurons following various noxious stimuli has been demonstrated in numerous studies. However, the pattern of expression of c-fos after incisional stimulus has not been evaluated. This study was designed to examine c-fos expression in an incisional pain model of rats. Methods: A 1 cm longitudinal incision was made through the skin, fascia and muscle of the plantar aspect of the hindpaw in enflurane-anesthetized rats. Withdrawal responses were measured using von Frey filaments at areas around the wound before surgery and for the next 48 hours. The expression of c-fos protein in the lumbar spinal cord was examined by immunohistochemistry. Results: After incision, c-fos was strongly expressed within laminae I, II, III, IV, V and VI ipsilateral to the incision. C-fos positive neurons were detected in the controlateral site, as well. Conclusions: These studies suggest that spinal c-fos protein may not be used as a specific marker for spinal nociceptive processing in an incisional pain model.

The Weddell Sea Anomaly (WSA) in the ionosphere is characterized by higher plasma density at night than during the day in the region near the Weddell Sea. According to previous studies on the WSA, it is known to occur mostly in southern summer and has not been reported in other seasons. We have utilized more than 13-year TOPEX TEC measurements in order to study how the WSA varies with seasons and how it changes with solar activity. The TOPEX TEC data have been extensively utilized for the climatological study of the ionosphere due to its excellent spatial and temporal coverage. We investigate the seasonal and solar activity variations of the WSA using four seasonal cases (Mar. equinox, Jun. solstice, Sep, equinox, and Dec. solstice) and two solar activity conditions (F10.7<120 for solar minimum and F10.7>120 for solar maximum conditions) for geomagnetically quiet periods. Our analysis shows that the WSA occurs only in the southern summer hemisphere for low F10.7, as in previous studies, but the WSA occurs all of seasons except for winter when F10.7 is high: it is most prominent during the December solstice (southern summer) and still strong during both equinoxes. The WSA appears to be an extreme case of global longitudinal variations at mid- and high-latitudes.
The purpose of this research is to find a better win-win growth strategy of Large and mid-sized IT service enterprises. Efficient win-win growth for large and mid-sized enterprises is essential for acquiring a solid global competitiveness in IT service industry. However, previous studies lack generalized and detailed findings, and therefore past strategies were based on fragmented analysis. To develop an efficient win-win growth for Large and mid-sized enterprises, global benchmarking and an in-depth analysis on deep-rooted problems in IT service industry has been conducted. Past and present policies on IT service industry have been reviewed based on desirable co-growth structure. Based on research, current policies are unable to support co-growth, and collaborative efforts between Large and mid-sized enterprises as well as square deals are necessary for win-win growth. A new policy paradigm has been derived and a roadmap for efficient co-growth strategy has been suggested. The results of this research can be used for building a better IT service industry polices. In future studies, a longitudinal analysis on the proposed co-growth strategy can be conducted.
This study investigated how variables of internalizing and externalizing problematic behaviors change according to gender and as time passes by and how the variables influence adolescent problematic behaviors. The variables selected for the analysis are personal variables, parent variables, peer and school variables, and community variables. longitudinal data collected for 4 years from the Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS) were utilized for the analysis. Data were collected initially from 2,707 fifth grade elementary students in 2005 and they were traced until 2008. The final respondents were 2,448 students. The findings are as follows. Frist, the statistical significance was found in changes of problematic behavioral variables in terms of the gender difference. Second, variables, such as self-esteem and self-control are negatively correlated to the problematic behaviors and stress level is strongly positively correlated to the behaviors. Third, the study pressure and peer attachment level are correlated to the initial value of internalizing problematic behaviors. In conclusion, given that more statistical significances were found at initial values than the change rates among variables, early intervention is important in addressing adolescent problematic behaviors.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the trends of occupational health nursing research by analyzing the Korean Journal of Occupational Health Nursing for the last 20 years. Methods: A total of 268 published papers during the 20 year period were analyzed with structured analysis forms. Results: Most of the articles were descriptive, but the number of experimental studies increased. Fifty-five percents of the subjects were healthy workers. Most common selection of subjects appeared to be based on convenience. Sixty-eight percent of research instruments were questionnaires and the reliability and the validity of instruments were described in approximately half of the studies. Parametric statistics were the main methods of data analysis, but some advanced statistics were often used rather than simple descriptive statistics. Mainly "health" has been studied (47.9%) among four meta-paradigms of nursing science. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop more rigorous and various research methodology such as longitudinal design, experimental study, or randomized controlled trial. Also, special attention must be paid to studying the environment of workers.
Objective: This study aimed to examine the longitudinal relations of children's temperamental attributes (i.e., emotionality, activity, and sociability) and maternal responsiveness to overall and specific externalizing/internalizing behavior problems during the preschool period. Methods: Data (N=1,438) from the 4th and 6th wave of Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC) were used in a series of hierarchical regression analyses. The analyses were conducted to determine the additive and interactive effects of maternal responsiveness and temperamental attributes of children at the age of 3 years on the broadband and narrowband scales of their behavior problems at the age of 5 years. Results: Overall, results confirmed the additive and interactive effects of maternal responsiveness and temperamental attributes on the levels of different domains of behavior problems. Examination of the interactive effects showed that maternal responsiveness was more strongly related to some behavior problems for temperamentally vulnerable children as compared to children with less temperamental vulnerabilities. Conclusion: The findings suggested that the beneficial effects of positive parenting on the development of behavior problems might be more pronounced for temperamentally vulnerable than for less vulnerable children.
Background. Although research has established the existence of an association between smoking and depression among adolescents, researchers have not reached consensus on the nature of the association. Objectives. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature, to examine the nature of the relationship between smoking and depression in adolescence, and to suggest future research directions. Methods. A literature search was conducted from the following six databases: (a) Ovid MEDLINE, (b) CINAHL, (c) PubMed Unrestricted, (d) PsycINFO, (e) ERIC, and (f) Sociological Abstracts. The combinations of the words, "depression," "smoking," "tobacco," "adolescent," and "teen" were used for keyword searches to find relevant articles. Results. In 47 of 57 studies, significant associations between smoking and depression were found. However, these significant relationships may either be spurious or unrelated to depression because a substantial number of studies did not adjust for confounders or did not use validated instruments to measure depression. Additionally, if the relationship is causal, its direction remains controversial. Five relationships have been suggested: (a) Depression causes smoking, (b) smoking causes depression, (c) there is a bidirectional relationship between smoking and depression, (d) smoking and depression occur due to confounders, and (e) subgroups with different relationships between the two conditions exist. Conclusions. It is necessary to further explore the relationship between smoking and depression. Future research should consider the need for: (a) longitudinal research designs, (b) more accurate measurement of depression, and (c) the control of confounders between smoking and depression.
A more complete two-dimensional vertical numerical model has been developed to describe the saltwater intrusion in an estuary. The model is based on the previous studies in order to obtain a better accuracy. The non-linear terms of the governing equations are analyzed and the $\sigma$-coordinate system is employed in the vertical direction with full transformation which is recently issued in several studies because numerical errors can be generated during the coordinate transformation of the diffusion term. The advection terms of the governing equations are discretized by an upwind scheme in second-order of accuracy. By employing an explicit scheme for the longitudinal direction and an implicit scheme for the vertical direction, the numerical model is free from the restriction of temporal step size caused by a relatively small grid ratio. In previous researches, some terms induced from the transformation have been intentionally excluded since they are asked the complicate discretization of the numerical model. However, the lack of these terms introduces significant errors during the numerical simulation of scalar transport problems, such as saltwater intrusion and sediment transport in an estuary. The numerical accuracy attributable to the full transformation is verified by comparing results with a previous model in a simply sloped topography. The numerical model is applied to the Han River estuary. Very reasonable agreements for salinity intrusion are observed.
