Currently in precast concrete construction, precast concrete and cast-in-place concrete with different concrete strengths are used. However, current design codes do not provide shear design methods for PC-CIP hybrid members using dual concrete strengths. In the present study, the shear strengths of beams using dual concrete compressive strengths (24 MPa, 60 MPa) were tested. The test variables were the area ratio of the two concretes, longitudinal bar ratio, and shear span-to-depth ratio. The shear strengths of test specimens were evaluated by current design methods, using an effective concrete strength (considering the area ratio of the two concrete strengths). The test result showed that when 60 MPa concrete was used in the compressive zone and the longitudinal bar ratio was low, the shear strengths of the test specimens were less than the predictions. On the basis of the results, design recommendations were provided for the shear design of the PC-CIP hybrid beams.

Current design codes regulate the minimum torsional reinforcement requirement for reinforced concrete members to prevent their brittle failure. The minimum torsional reinforcement ratio specified in the current national code and ACI318-11, however, have problems in the minimum longitudinal reinforcement ratio for torsion, the equilibrium condition in space truss model, and a marginal strength, etc. Thus, in order to overcome such shortcomings, this study presents a rational equation for minimum torsional reinforcement ratio that can provide a sufficient margin of safety in design. The minimum torsional reinforcement ratio proposed in this study was compared to the test results available in literature, and it was confirmed that it gave a proper margin of safety for all specimens studied in this paper.

Recently, many researches are carried for high-speed and light craft. In this study, the optimum structural design procedure and the computer program are developed to minimize the hull weight of SES(Surface Effect Ship) built of composite materials. Three types of composite materials-Sandwich, Single Skin and Hybrid type- are considered and the efficiency of each type is investigated. In design process, the optimum design of main members is performed at first considering longitudinal strength. And then, the transverse member design is performed considering torsional strength SSDP(Structural Synthesis Design program) of U.S. Navy is adopted for design algorithm and DnV classification nile for design loads and strength criteria. For optimum structural design, ES 1+1 optimization technique is used.

The twin aims of the present study are to develop a PC program for the statistical analysis of the measured cohesion data and to suggest a probabilistic corrosion rate estimation model for longitudinal members of tanker structures. A data analysis for the corrosion rate statistics(i.e., mean, standard deviation) as a function of the corrosion parameters is established for various structural member categories/locations of interest. Development of the computer program is focused on possible operation together with future addition of more corrosion data as they become available. To investigate the influence of the corrosion protection scheme a series of the corrosion analysis varying the life of coating are carried out and several different corrosion models as a function of time are suggested depending on the coating life.
Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) can be used in the UHPC-steel composite structures especially for bridge structures to achieve high stiffness and high fatigue resistance with low self-weight. The structural performances of UHPC-steel composite slabs subjected to hogging moment have a significant influence on the global stiffness and durability of UHPC-steel composite structures. In order to study the structural behaviors of non-steam-cured UHPC-steel composite slabs subjected to negative moment, five composite slabs combined the thin UHPC layers to steel plates via shear stud connecters with the diameter of 16mm were fabricated and tested under negative moment. The test program aimed to investigate the effect of stud spacing and longitudinal reinforcement ratios on the failure mode, load-deflection behaviors, cracking patterns, bond-slips, and carrying capacities of composite slabs subjected to negative moment. In addition, direct tensile tests for the dog-bone UHPC specimens with longitudinal reinforcement bars were carried out to study the effect of reinforcement bars on the tensile strength of UHPC in the thin structure members. Based on the experimental results, analytical models were also developed to predict the cracking load and ultimate load of UHPC-steel composite slabs subjected to negative moment.

In this study, when subjected to in-plane shear such as a shear wall, the behavior characteristics of a concrete member using CFRP rebars were investigated when the longitudinal reinforcement ratio was kept constant at 2.96% and the transverse reinforcement ratio was changed from 0.30 to 2.98%. The evaluation was conducted based on MCFT theory and analyzed by comparison with the case of concrete members using steel rebars. When the reinforcement ratio ranged from 0.30 to 1.19%, concrete members employing CFRP rebars exhibited higher shear strength compared to those using steel rebars. In contrast, at high reinforcement ratios of 1.79 and 2.98%, it was observed that the shear strength of the member with CFRP rebar was lower compared to the member with steel rebar. Maximum shear strain was observed to be higher for members reinforced with steel rebars at lower reinforcing bar ratios, while for ratios of 0.97% and above, CFRP rebars resulted in higher maximum shear strain. As the reinforcement ratio increases, the use of CFRP rebar instead of steel rebar results in a greater increase in maximum shear strain. By analyzing the difference in strain in the reinforcing bar as well as the difference in principal strain in the element caused by differences in the mechanical properties of the steel rebar and CFRP rebar, the shear strength and shear strain when using steel rebar and CFRP rebar with different reinforcement ratios can be compared and analyzed.
Among the various alternatives to make a steel tubular member connection, making a slotted and gusset plate welded connection is one of the most frequently preferred alternatives. This type of connection is essentially an end connection that is made by slotting the tube longitudinally, inserting the gusset plate and then placing longitudinal fillet welds at the tube-to-plate interface. In this paper an experimental study on the behaviour of such connections in stainless steel is presented. 24 specimens were tested under concentrically applied axial tensile forces for varying tube-to-gusset plate weld lengths. Both circular and box section members were considered in the test program. Load-deformation curves were obtained and comparisons were made in terms of strength and ductility. The results obtained from the study were then critically examined and compared with currently available design guidance for slotted gusset plate welded tubular end connections. It is noted that no specific rules exist in international specifications on structural stainless steel which cover the design of such connections. Therefore, the results of this study are compared with the existing design rules for carbon steel.

This study deals with the quasi-static tests on steel reinforced concrete composite columns with single embedded steel or multiple members. For the design of bridge piers, the composite section needs to have low steel ratio for cost savings because the dimension of the pier section is usually large. There is lack of design guidelines for these composite columns with low steel ratio, but the design provisions for the normal reinforced concrete column can be used for the design because of the low steel ratio. It is necessary to provide the design provisions in terms of the strength limit state and seismic performance by the detail requirements on the longitudinal steel and the transverse steel. The test parameters in this study were determined considering the current design provisions on RC columns. Through the quasi-static tests, the seismic performance of the composite columns were discussed.
The standardization urban transit project has been started by government and the Korean standard electrical railcar has been designed. The bodyshell of standard railcar is made of aluminium alloy. In the present paper, the design of its bodyshell is evaluated in the viewpoint of strength analysis. The loading condition is based on the 'Test Methods of Static Load for Body Structure of Electrical Multiple Unit', standard specification. The bodyshell of Korean standard EMU consist of longitudinal extrusion members which are double-skin structure type. For the purpose of security and lightening we decided the section of the aluminium carbody through the size optimization in this paper Hereafter this paper will contribute to the shape optimization.

This article presents a theoretical parametric analysis on the ultimate torsional behaviour of axially restrained reinforced concrete (RC) beams. This analysis is performed by using a computing procedure based on a modification of the Variable Angle Truss Model. This computing procedure was previously developed to account for the influence of the longitudinal compressive stress state due to the axial restraint conditions provided by the connections of the beams to other structural members. The presented parametric study aims to check the influence of some important variable studies, namely: torsional reinforcement ratio, compressive concrete strength and axial restraint level. From the results of this parametric study, nonlinear regression analyses are performed and some design charts are proposed. Such charts allow to correct the resistance torque of RC beams (rectangular sections with small height to width ratios) to account for the favorable influence of the axial restraint.
