This paper investigates the flexural stiffness of simply supported steel-concrete composite I-beams under positive bending moment through combined experimental, numerical, and different standard methods. 14 composite beams are tested for experimental study and parameters including shear connection degree, transverse and longitudinal reinforcement ratios, loading way are also investigated. ABAQUS is employed to establish finite element (FE) models to simulate the flexural behavior of composite beams. The influences of a few key parameters, such as the shear connection degree, stud arrangement, stud diameter, beam length, loading way, on the flexural stiffness is also studied by parametric study. In addition, three widely used standard methods including GB, AISC, and British standards are used to estimate the flexural stiffness of the composite beams. The results are compared with the experimental and numerical results. The findings have provided comprehensive understanding of the flexural stiffness and the modelling of the composite beams. The results also indicate that GB 50017-2003 could provide better results in comparison to the other standards.
The Eurocode 4 presents some negative aspects in the design of composite slabs by the m-k Method or the Partial Connection Method. On one hand, the component chemical adherence is not accounted for in the connection between the profiled steel sheet and the concrete. On the other hand, the application of these methods requires some fitting parameters that must be determined by full scale tests. In this paper, the Eurocode 4 methods are compared with a method developed at the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, based on pullout tests, which can be a valid alternative. Hence, in order to calculate the necessary parameters for the three methods, several tests have been performed such as the full scale test described in Eurocode 4 and pull-out tests. This last type of tests is of small dimensions and implicates lower costs. Finally, a full-scale test of a steel-concrete composite slab with a generic loading is presented, with the goal of verifying the analytical formulation.

In the steel deck box girder bridges, the deck is composed of deck plate, longitudinal and lateral direction ribs. The bridge, that is considered in this study, has been used for about 40 years and, recently, several cracks were found in the connection area of U-ribs. Further, additional cracks were occurred after some lateral rib plates and longitudinal frames were attached for the purpose of reinforcement. Therefore, the connection method in the U-ribs reinforcement was changed from the bolting to the weldment to get rid of stress concentration and further cracking. In this study, the stress in the U-ribs connection was analysed numerically and variable amplitude stress for the real traffic loads was measured experimentally before and after the frame reinforcement. Finally, the effects of reinforcement method were investigated and discussed.

Recently, lean duplex stainless steel, STS329FLD with less nickel (reduced to 0.5~1.5%) has been developed as a substitute of austenitic stainless steel (8%~10.5% nickel in STS304) and included in Korean standards (KS). This paper investigates the block shear behavior of cold-formed duplex stainless steel (STS329FLD, nominal plate thickness of 1.5mm) fillet-welded connection with base metal fracture. Main variables are weld lengths in the longitudinal and the transverse directions of applied force ranged from 20mm to 50mm. As a result, specimens failed by typical block shear facture (the combination of gross section tensile fracture and shear fracture or shear yielding) and ultimate strength of the specimens got higher with the increase of weld length. Block shear fracture strengths predicted by current design specifications (KBC2016/AISC2016 and EC3) and existing proposed equations for welded connections by Topkaya, Oosterhof & Driver and Lee et al. were compared with test strengths. KBC2016/AISC2016 and EC3 design specifications underestimated block shear strength of STS329FLD welded connections by on average 24%, 29%, respectively and Oosterhof & Driver, Topkaya and Lee et al's equations overestimated the ultimate strength of the welded connection by the range of 3% to 44%.
The orthotropic steel deck bridge made by using relatively thin steel plate, and structural members such as transverse and longitudinal ribs, cross beam, etc. in the bridge are fabricated with complex shape by welding. Therefore, the possibility occurring deformation and defects by welding is very high, and stress states in the welded connection parts are very complex. Also, the fatigue cracks in orthotropic steel deck bridge are happening fromthe welded connection parts of secondary member than main member. However, stress evaluation for main members is mainly carried out in the design process of the bridge, detailed stress evaluation and characteristic analysis is not almost reviewed in the structural details which fatigue crack occurred. For the orthotropic steel deck bridge with open ribs which has been serviced for 29 years, in this study, the cause of fatigue crack is investigated and the fatigue safety of the bridge is examined based on fieldmeasurement by the loading test and real traffic condition. Also, structural analyses using gridmodel and detailed analysis model were carried out for the welded connection parts of longitudinal rib and diaphramthat fatigue crack occurred. Additionally, the behavior characteristics due to running vehicles were investigated by using influence area analysis for these structural details, and the occurrence causes of fatigue crack in the target bridge were clarified.
An orthotropic steel deck system is widely adapted form for a long-span bridge. It has many advantages, such as the big reduction of dead weight, the simplicity for erection, and the reduction of the construction period. However, an orthotropic steel deck system requires a lot of welding work, which may result in defects and deformation of connection. Therefore, the research for the general behavior and fatigue strength of the several details in orthotropic steel deck bridge is necessary. The fatigue failure with distortion results from secondary stress by out-of-plane deformation; these kinds of cracks are very difficult to measure, and can not be precisely calculated through finite element analysis. This stress concentration phenomenon generates the fatigue failure around the lower scallop of the transverse rib. This paper presents improved details of the intersection between the longitudinal rib and the transverse rib of an orthotropic steel deck bridge by the third dimensional hit size test, and the finite element method, which can minimize local stress through parametric study.

Recent research on steel moment-resisting connection between steel beams and concrete filled steel tubes has shown that there are considerable advantages to be obtained by anchoring the connection to the concrete infill within the tube using anchors in blind bolts. In the research reported here, extensive experimental tests and numerical analyses have been performed to study the anchorage behaviour of cogged deformed reinforcing bars within concrete filled circular steel tubes. This data in essential knowledge for the design of the steel connections that use anchored blind bolts, both for strength and stiffness. A series of pull-out tests were conducted using steel tubes with different diameter to thickness ratios under monotonic and cyclic loading. Both hoop strains and longitudinal strains in the tubes were measured together with applied load and slip. Various lead-in lengths before the bend and length of tailed extension after the bend were examined. These dimensions were limited by the dimensions of the steel tube and did not meet the requirements for "standard" cogs as specified in concrete standards such as AS 3600 and ACI 318. Nevertheless, all of the tested specimens failed by bar fracture outside the steel tubes. A comprehensive 3D Finite Element model was developed to simulate the pull-out tests. The FE model took into account material nonlinearities, deformations in reinforcing bars and interactions between different surfaces. The FE results were found to be in good agreement with experimental results. This model was then used to conduct parametric studies to investigate the influence of the confinement provided by the steel tube on the infilled concrete.
The paper combines two distinct parts. First the behavior of welded headed studs with small diameters of 10 and 13 mm acting as shear connectors (which are not embraced in current standards) is studied. Based on standard push tests the load-slip relationships and strengths are evaluated. While the current standard (Eurocode 4 and AISC) formulas used for such studs give reasonable but too conservative strengths, less conservative and full load-slip rigidities are evaluated and recommended for a subsequent investigation or design. In the second part of the paper the partially encased beams under bending are analyzed. Following former experiments showing rather indistinct role of studs used for shear connection in such beams their role is studied. Numerical model employing ANSYS software is presented and validated using former experimental data. Subsequent parametric studies investigate the longitudinal shear between steel and concrete parts of the beams with respect to friction at the steel and concrete interface and contribution of studs with small diameters required predominantly for assembly stages (concreting). Substantial influence of the friction and effect of concrete confinement was observed with rather less noticeable contribution of the studs. Distribution of the longitudinal shear and its sharing between friction and studs is presented with concluding remarks.

Hihg Tensile Steel enables to reduce the plate thickness comparing to the case when Mild Steel is used. From the economical view points this is very preferable since the reduction in the hull weight. however to use the High Tensile Steel effectively the plate thickness may become thin so that the occurrence of buckling is inevitable and design allowing plate buckling may be necessary. If the inplane stiffness of the plating decreases due to buckling the flexural rigidity of the cross sect6ion of a ship's hull also decreases. This may lead to excessive deflection of the hull girder under longitudinal bending. In these cases a precise estimation of plate's behavior after buckling is necessary and nonliner analysis of isolated and stiffened plates is required for structural sys-tem analysis. In this connection this paper discusses nonlinear behaviour of thin plate under thrust. Based on the analytical method elastic large deflection analysis of isolated plate is perform and simple expression are derived to evaluated the inplane rigidity of plates subjected to uniaxial compression.
A kind of accordion-web RBS connection, "Tubular Web RBS (TW-RBS)" connection is proposed in this research. TW-RBS is made by replacing a part of web with a tube at the desirable location of the beam plastic hinge. This paper presents first a numerical study under cyclic load using ABAQUS finite element software. A test specimen is used for calibration and comparison of numerical results. Obtained results indicated that TW-RBS would reduce contribution of the beam web to the whole moment strength and creates a ductile fuse far from components of the beam-to-column connection. Besides, TW-RBS connection can increase story drift capacity up to 9% in the case of shallow beams which is much more than those stipulated by the current seismic codes. Furthermore, the tubular web like corrugated sheet can improve both the out-of-plane stiffness of the beam longitudinal axis and the flange stability condition due to the smaller width to thickness ratio of the beam flange in the plastic hinge region. Thus, the tubular web in the plastic hinge region improves lateral-torsional buckling stability of the beam as just local buckling of the beam flange at the center of the reduced section was observed during the tests. Also change of direction of strain in arc shape of the tubular web section is smaller than the accordion webs with sharp corners therefore the tubular web provides a better condition in terms of low-cycle fatigue than other accordion web with sharp corners.
