  • The Chromosomes of five cobitid fishes, Cobitis taenia taenia, C. taenia lutheri, C. taenia striata, C. longicorpus and C. koreensis were studied. The karyotypic studies were based on the observations from the flame-drying preparations. The results obtained such as the number of somatic chromosomes, the type of chromosomes according to the centromeric loci and the number of chromosomal arm(AN) were as follows: C. longicorpus, 2n=50, 12m-8sm-30a, AN=70; C. koreensis, 2n=50, 10m-12sm-28a, AN=72; C. taenia taenia, 2n=48, 14m-4sm-30a, AN=66: C. taenia lutheri, 2n=50, 10m-6sm-34a, AN=66; and C. taenia striata, 2n=50, 10m-6sm-34a, AN=66. Peculiarly, in the case of C. taenia lutheri the chromosome number of somatic diploid was found to be 48-51, however, the number of chromosomal arm was 66, irrespective of the difference in the numbers of each somatic genome. It was confirmed there exists the Robertsonian event, one of the chromosomal polymorphism in C.t. lutheri. It was remarked taxonomically that the karyotype of C. taenia taenia of Korea having 48 diploid chromosomes was not identical with that of Europe and Japan with 50 chromosomes. Based on the karyotype analysis the Korean cobitid fishes can be classified roughly into three species groups according to arm numbers and diploid numbers; 1) C. taenia taenia, C. taenia lutheri, C. taenia striata 2) C. koreensis, C. longicor pus, C. rotundicaudata and 3) C. granoei.

  • Study on the fish fauna of the Chuam Dam in Sungju-gun, Chollanamdo, Korea was conducted from March 1990 to October 1990. Twenty-eight species belong to 23 genera and 11 families have been collected at five areas within the dam. The dominant species were Zacco platypus, Acheilognathus limbata and Zacco temmincki. Among the collected fishes, 5 species were known to be endemic species in Korea. They were Acheilognathus yamatsutae, Sarcocheilichthys variegatus wakiyae, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Microthysogobio yaluenis, Cobitis longicorpus, Pseudobagrus koreanus, Liobagrus mediadiposalis and Odontobutis platycephala. The frequencies occurrence were 86.71% for 5.2% for Cyprinidae and Osmeridae.

  • The five species of genus Cobitis from Korea were investigated by electron microscopes to clarify the adhesive membranes on zona radiata. In the late vitellogenic stage the adhesive membranes could be classified into two form as follows: 1) granular form of Cobitis lutheri, C. striata, C. sinensis, and C. sinensis-longicorpus, 2) villous form of C. melanoleuca. Although C. lutheri, C. striata, C. sinensis, and C. sinensis-longicorpus possessed the same granular form, it was evident that fine structure of the zona radiata varied according to species. The adhesive membranes and fine structures of zona radiata in Cobitis showed a species specificity closely related to their habitats and spawning properties.

  • The lchthyofauna was investigated at the nine sites in the Tam-jin River from September 10, 1990 to October 12, 1993. The fishes were collected by means of a casting net and hooks. The collected fishes were classified into 34 species of 26 genera in 13 families. In the present study 3species of Acanthogobius hasta, Macropodus chinensis and Channa argus were newly collected. Among the 34 species, 12 were known to be endemic species in korean waters they are Rhodeus uyekii, Acheilognathus yamatsutae, Acanthorhodeus gracilis, Sarcocheilichtys variegatus wakiyae, Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae, Squalidus japonicus, Squalidus gracilis, Microphysogobio yaluensis, Cobitis longicorpus, Pseudobagrus koreanus, Liobagrus mediadiposalis, Odontobutis platycephala. The dominant species were Zacco platypus, Zacco temmincki and Acheilognathus yamatsutae.
