The Nutritional Value of Brown Rice and Maize for Growing Pigs

  • An experiment was designed to study the nutritional value of Chinese brown rice and maize for growing pigs. Six male grower pigs (Duroc${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Large White, $24.3{\pm}1.26$ kg average initial BW) were surgically fitted with a simple T-cannula at the terminal ileum and allotted within a $2{\times}2$ Latin square design. The pigs were fed either a maize or brown rice diet in a direct method to determine their digestibility. The brown rice used in this experiment was husked from one kind of early, long grain, and non-glutinous rice (ELGNR, indica rice: non-waxy rice, containing amylopectin and amylose) in southern China. Chromic oxide was used as a marker. The diets were supplied at about 4.0% of body weight in dry matter/d. Total faeces and urine were collected on days 4 and 5; digesta was collected on days 6-8 in each period. The average body weight was 24.3 kg at the start of the experiment and 27.6 kg at the end. The results showed that the apparent ileal digestibilities of most amino acids of brown rice were significantly higher than those in maize (p<0.01), as were the apparent ileal digestibilities of crude protein (CP), digestible energy (DE), organic matter (OM) and dry matter (DM) (p<0.05). However, the apparent ileal starch digestibilities of the two treatments were similar (p>0.05). The values of the apparent faecal digestibilities derived from the two methods, marker and total faecal-collection methods, were very similar and also correlated with each other. The difference in absolute value of the apparent faecal digestibilities between brown rice and maize was smaller compared to that of the apparent ileal digestibilities. The net protein utilization was higher (p = 0.07) and the DE metabolizable rate was significantly higher (p<0.01) for brown rice than for maize. The metabolizable energy (ME) of brown rice is similar to that of maize, while the DE of brown rice was relatively lower. It can be concluded that Chinese brown rice are better than maize not only in apparent ileal digestibilities, but also in metabolizable rate of amino acids and gross energy under the present study conditions.

원추형(圓錐型) 탈곡기(脱糓機)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (Study on Cone Type Thresher (I))

  • The major limiting factor on the determination of combine capacity is the frequent occurence of clogging over the some parts of machine when the crop is wet in the case of Japanese self-feeding type combine. And in the case of American conventional combine having big separating parts, the great grain loss and damage occur when the machine is used for rice harvesting. This experiment was carried out to develop the new type threshing and separating equipment. Proto-type thresher which consist of a conical threshing drum and a conical separating sieve rotating around the threshing cone was constructed and tested. In the case of 800 rpm of threshing cone speed, average threshing loss was below 1 percent, separating loss was about 1 percent, grain damage was about 0.4 percent, and average total power required was about 2.6 PS. This design has some problems such as higher power required or wrapping problems under the conditions of feeding long damp straw. But, compared with the conventional combine or thresher, this machine certainly has some potentials for this approach to combine development. The crop feed rate must be increased through improvement of the feeding portion of the threshing cone. And it is required to investigate further about some parameters causing wrapping phenomena.

유구(維鳩)-광천(廣川) 금은광화대지역(金銀鑛化帶地域)에서의 토양(土壤) 및 농작물(農作物)의 중금속오염(重金屬汚染) (Heavy Metal Contamination of Soils and Crop Plants in the Yugu-Kwangcheon Au-Ag Metallogenic Province)

  • Yugu-Kwangcheon Au-Ag Province is connected to the southwestern part of the Cheonan Province and includes the Gubong (one of the biggest gold mine in past), Daebong and Samgwang mines. Cadmium concentrations in sphalerite of Yugu-Kwancheon Province is higher than those of other Au-Ag provinces and could be the source of the heavy metal contaminations. Heavy metals are present in rock-soil-plant-human system from natural geological materials, and dietary intake through this system makes a significant contribution to the ingestion of heavy metals by man. In order to examine the degree and extent of heavy metal contaminations in the Gubong, Daebong and Samgwang mine areas of Yugu-Kwangcheon Province, soil, stream water, sediment and crop plant samples were taken and analyzed for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES). Cadmium and Pb concentrations in paddy/farm soils and stream sediments from the Gubong and Samgwang mine areas are higher than those in uncontaminated soils. Lead concentrations in crop plants cultivated in these soils are high up to $0.38{\mu}g/g$ in rice grain and $4.5{\mu}g/g$ in sesame. In these mine areas, regular consumption of crop plants by the local population would seem to pose a potential health problems from long-term Pb exposure. The biological absorption coefficient in rice grain for heavy metals varies in the order $C_d=Zn>Cu>Pb$ and the relationship between Cd concentrations in soils and crop plants is expressed by the equation $Cd_{plant}=0.11245\;Log\;Cd_{soil}+0.13472$.

Effects of Replacing Corn with Brown Rice or Brown Rice with Enzyme on Growth Performance and Nutrient Digestibility in Growing Pigs

  • A 4 week experiment was designed to study the effects of replacing corn with Chinese brown rice or adding different amylase in brown rice basal diet on growth performance and apparent fecal digestibilities of nutrients in growing pigs. One hundred and eight cross-bred pigs (Duroc${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Large White), weighing an average of $18.35{\pm}0.12kg$, were randomly assigned to 6 treatments with 6 replications per treatment. Diet in treatment 1 was corn-soybean meal basal diet, and in treatment 2, 3 and 4, corn was replaced by brown rice on rates of 33.3%, 66.7% and 100% respectively on the basis of treatment 1. And diets in treatment 5 and 6 were similar to treatment 4 except two kinds of amylases, glucoamylase and ${\alpha}$-amylase, were added respectively. The brown rice used in this experiment was husked from one kind of early, long grain, non-glutinous rice (ELGNR, indica rice) in southern China. The results indicated that there was a slight improvement in growth performance of pigs in brown rice treatments (p>0.05). The blood urea nitrogen value in treatment 2 was lower than that in treatment 1 (p<0.05). The differences of apparent fecal digestibilities of most nutrients were significant (p<0.05) except CP. Digestibilities of GE, OM and DM in treatment 4 were the best and digestibility of crude fat in treatment 5 appeared best (p<0.05). Contrast results between treatment 1 and treatment 2 to 4 indicated that the digestibility of GE, OM and DM increased significantly with the replacing rates of brown rice (p<0.05). Contrast results between treatment 4 and 5 indicated that adding glucoamylase in brown rice diet increased growth performance slightly (p>0.05) but not for digestibilities. This experiment shows a positive effect of brown rice on growth performance, especially on nutrient digestibility.

우리나라 재래벼의 작물학적 특성 (Agronomic Characteristics of Korean Landrace in Rice)

  • 우리나라의 재래벼 192품종을 공시하여 다양한 작물학적 특성을 평가하고 양적 형질간의 상근관계를 검토하여 유기농업 및 친환경농업에 적합한 품종을 선발하고 추후 이를 품종육성의 소재로 활용하고자 실험을 수행한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 재래벼는 파종에서 출수까지 평균 111.1일이 소요되어 중생종에 속하는 품종이 많았고 초장과 간장은 일반 재배 품종에 비하여 대부분 20∼40cm 정도 컸다. 2. 엽폭과 이삭의 평균 길이는 각각 1.3cm, 22.4cm이었고 주당 이삭수는 평균 10개로 소얼성의 특성을 나타내었으며, 현미의 장폭비는 평균 1.7이었고 장립종도 일부 존재하였으며 천립중은 평균 21.6g이었다. 3. 재래벼의 양적 형질간 상관관졔는 간장과 수장, 엽폭, 출수기간에는 고도로 유의한 정의 상관이 있었으며, 출수기와 천립중 간에는 고도로 유의한 부의 상관이 존재하였다. 4. 간강도는 27.1%가 약한 특성을 나타내었고 엽신과 엽초의 색은 3.6%가 자주줄무늬를 나타냈으며 엽각와 지엽각도는 직립형이 각각 46.9%, 10.9%이었고 엽노화도는 지연형이 24.0%이었다. 5. 재래벼의 74.5%가 까락이 있었고 찰벼는 20.3%, 갈색종피는 4.2%가 존재하였으며, 주두색, 영색, 부선색 및 망색은 백색, 갈색, 적색 및 자색 등 다양한 색이 존재하였다.

장기간(長期間)의 비료연용(肥料連用)이 수도(水稻)의 생육(生育)과 수량(收量)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effect of Long-Term Fertilizer Application on the Growth and Yield of Rice)

  • 다년간(多年間) 동일(同一) 비료(肥料)를 시용(施用)한 논에서 시비조건(施肥條件)의 차이(差異)가 토양(土壤)의 특성(特性)에 미치는 영향(影響)을 구명(究明)함과 아울러 수도(水稻)의 반응(反應)올 형태(形態), 생리(生理), 생육면(生育面)으로 분석검토(分析檢討)하였던 바 다음과 같은 결과(結果)를 얻었다. 1. 무비구(無肥區)와 무질소구(無窒素區)에서는 엽면적(葉面積)과 평균(平均) 생장속도(生長速度)의 감소(減少), 출수지연(出穗遲延), 수수(穗數)와 단위영화수(單位潁花數)의 감소(減少)로 3 요소구(要素區)에 비(比)하여 수량(收量)이 각각(各各) 43%와 53%정도(程度) 감소(減少)되었다. 2. 무인산구(無燐酸區)에서는 토양(土壤) 및 도체(稻體)의 인산함량(燐酸含量)이 낮았으나 그 결핍증상(缺乏症狀)이 나타날 정도(程度)는 아니었으며 수량(收量) 감수(減收)도 적었다. 3. 무가리구(無加里區)에서는 토양(土壤) 및 도체(稻體)의 가리함량(加里含量이 크게 떨어졌으며 1 수영화수(穗潁花數)의 감소(減少)로 삼요소구(三要素區)에 비(比)하여 약(約) 9%의 수량(收量) 감수(減收)가 있었다. 4. 삼요소(三要素)+퇴비시용구(堆肥施用區)에서는 토양중(土樓中)의 유효인산(有效燐酸), 치환성가리(置換性加里) 및 규산함량(珪酸含量)이 높았으며 도체내질소(稻體內窒素), 인산(燐酸), 가리(加里) 및 규산(珪酸)의 흡수량(吸收量)이 증대(增大)되고 단위영화수(單位潁花數)와 수수(穗數) 증가(增加)로 삼요소(三要素) 시용구(施用區)보다 6~9% 증수(增收)되었다. 5. 퇴비시용구(堆肥施用區)는 질소(窒素), 인산(燐酸)의 흡수량(吸收量) 감소(減少)와 영양생장부진(營養生長不振), 수수(穗數) 및 영화수(潁花數) 감소(減少)로 과실(結實)의 양호(良好)에도 불구(不拘)하고 삼요소구(三要素區)보다 수량(收量)이 약(約) 30% 감소(減少)되었으나 무비료(無肥料)보다는 28%의 증수효과(增收效果)가 인정(認定)되었다.

폐터널 저장 쌀의 이화학적 및 관능적 특성 (Physicochemical and Sensory Properties of Rice Stored in an Unused Tunnel)

  • 본 연구는 폐터널의 양곡저장 창고로서의 가능성을 타진하기 위하여 경남지역에서 수확한 무농약벼(NP) 혹은 저농약벼(LP) 8종을 폐터널에 8개월 동안(11월~이듬해 7월) 보관하면서 월 2회 샘플링을 실시하여 10분도미로 도정한 후 쌀의 선도 및 품위특성을 평가하였고 $5^{\circ}C$에 저장 유통되는 브랜드 쌀을 양성대조군으로 이용하였다. 폐터널 저장쌀의 선도 평가를 위해 peroxidase 활성을 측정한 결과, 저장 후 3~6개월 동안 저장기간의 경과에 따른 선도의 감소가 소폭 나타났다. 단, 남해 무농약벼 및 거창 무농약벼의 peroxidase 활성이 가장 높아 무농약 재배 벼의 선도가 저농약벼에 비해 높은 것으로 드러났다. 백도(whiteness)는 NP의 저장전기 값이 대조군에 비해 유의적인 차이가 나타났으나(p<0.05) 그 외 대부분의 백도값이 40 정도를 획득하였다. 완전미 비율은 LP의 저장 전기의 값이 $92.9{\pm}1.9%$로 대조군의 $96.08{\pm}3.09%$에 비해 낮게 나타났으나 대조군이 저장전기에 비해 저장후기에 완전미 비율이 크게 감소한 데 비해 폐터널 저장쌀은 완전미 비율의 감소율이 낮게 나타나서 장기간 저장 시 그 장점이 더욱 부각될 것으로 보였다. 분상질미(chalky rice)는 저장 전기에는 대조군에 비해 차이가 나타나지 않았으나 저장후기에는 NP, LP 모두 유의적으로 증가하였다. 파쇄미(broken rice) 비율은 NP와 대조군간에는 차이가 나타나지 않았고 LP는 저장 전기 및 후기 모두 대조군에 비해 높게 나타났다. 손상미(damaged rice)와 변색미(colored rice)비율은 군간의 유의성이 관찰되지 않았다. 이화학적 특성에 있어, NP와 LP의 단백질 함량은 7.1%, 7.3%로 나타났으며 폐터널 저장쌀의 아밀로스 함량은 11.1~17.2로서 벼의 생육조건이나 환경에 따라 아밀로스 함량이 크게 차이가 남을 알 수 있었다. 폐터널 저장벼의 평균 수분함량은 $13.94{\pm}0.26%$로 적정 수분 량보다 낮았으며 저장전기의 수분함량은 대조군에 비해 비교적 낮았으나 저장 후기에는 그다지 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 식미치는 저장전기에 NP와 LP에서 각각 $71.3{\pm}2.1$, $71.7{\pm}1.5$로 나타나 대조군의 $74.0{\pm}3.6$에 비해 큰 차이가 없었으며 저장후기의 식미치는 모든 군에서 저장전기에 비해 대폭 감소하였으나 실험군과 대조군 간의 유의적인 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 폐터널 저장쌀과 $5^{\circ}C$ 이온쌀로 지은 밥의 외관, 조직감 및 향미에 대해 비교한 결과, 윤기, 밥알의 온전함, 찰기 및 구수한 맛은 대조군의 평균값들이 약간 높게 나타났다. 한편, 노란 정도와 경도, 산패취와 군내는 터널쌀로 지은 밥이 대조군에 비해 경미한 차이로 높게 나타났다. 끝으로 전체적인 선호도는 대조군($5.25{\pm}1.0$)이 터널쌀($4.6{\pm}0.8$) 보다 높았으나 10개의 전 항목에 있어 통계적 유의성이 나타난 항목은 없었다. 끝으로, 고온다습한 여름을 보내는 한국 실정에 있어서 폐터널이라는 환경은 내부 온도 및 습도가 쌀 저장에 유리하게 유지되는 특성이 있었으며, 본 연구가 장기간 폐터널 보관쌀의 품위특성을 보고하는 첫 사례임을 감안할 때 이후 기관 및 학계의 폭넓은 관심이 요구된다.

로지스틱함수법 및 Markov 전이모형법을 이용한 농업기계의 수요예측에 관한 연구 (Study on Demand Estimation of Agricultural Machinery by Using Logistic Curve Function and Markov Chain Model)

  • This study was performed to estimate mid and long term demands of a tractor, a rice transplanter, a combine and a grain dryer by using logistic curve function and Markov chain model. Field survey was done to decide some parameters far logistic curve function and Markov chain model. Ceiling values of tractor and combine fer logistic curve function analysis were 209,280 and 85,607 respectively. Based on logistic curve function analysis, total number of tractors increased slightly during the period analysed. New demand for combine was found to be zero. Markov chain analysis was carried out with 2 scenarios. With the scenario 1(rice price $10\%$ down and current supporting policy by government), new demand for tractor was decreased gradually up to 700 unit in the year 2012. For combine, new demand was zero. Regardless of scenarios, the replacement demand was increased slightly after 2003. After then, the replacement demand is decreased after the certain time. Two analysis of logistic owe function and Markov chain model showed the similar trend in increase and decrease for total number of tractors and combines. However, the difference in numbers of tractors and combines between the results from 2 analysis got bigger as the time passed.

Increasing plant yield by modulating root hair development in Brachypodium distachyon

  • Root hair development has the potential to increase crop yields and at the same time to decrease fertilizer use, which will be required in the next 30 years to meet the demand for crop-derived commodities in a world with decreasing available natural resources. Root hair defective six (RHD6) encoding a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor, is associated with root hair differentiation, and its roles are root hair initiation and elongation. Grass plants, rice and Brachypodium have been used as model plants to study the gene function of the root hair defective six like (RSL) subfamily which is orthologous to AtRHD6. The RSL subfamily has an identical gene function with AtRHD6 which is involved with root hair differentiation as well. Plants with longer root hairs within a species should have an improved Pi uptake efficiency; therefore, we would expect that a plant with a high Pi uptake could contribute to increasing the plant yield. We achieved increased root hair length by manipulating the RSL subfamily genes. It is expected that in these transgenic plants, the long root hairs would be sufficient to improve the Pi uptake and hence improve biomass and yield component (tiller, spikelet number, and spikelet weight) of the plant. Here, we demonstrate that Brachypodium transgenic plants overexpressing the BdRSL subfamily genes have an improved biomass and grain yield. The result of this study could be applied to important crop plants like rice.

한국산 쌀의 맥주 부원료로서의 특성 (Quality Characteristics of Korean Rice as Brewing Adjunct)

  • 국내에서 생산된 쌀 6품종의 맥주제조특성을 국내 및 미국의 맥주회사에서 사용되는 쌀과 비교해 볼 때 국내 쌀의 수분함량은 $11.4{\sim}12.6%$로 미국 맥주회사에서 사용되는 쌀의 수분함량 10.7%보다 높았다. 장립종(long grain)이며 Indica품종인 IR36은 전분량이 적으나 단백질 함량이나 amylose함량이 높았다. 맥아 60%에 쌀 40%를 혼합하여 맥즙을 제조한 결과 색, 점도, pH, 수용성 단백질, 추출물함량(% extract), 당의 소성에서 Indica품종은 Japonica품종과 큰 차이를 나타내지 않았다. 국내에서 생산되는 쌀로 제조된 맥즙은 수용성 단백질, pH, 점도 등에서는 미국산 쌀로 제조된 맥즙과 큰 차이를 나타내지 않았으나 추출물함량은 약간 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 쌀을 혼합하여 제조한 맥즙의 glucose와 maltose함량은 맥아만으로 제조된 맥즙보다 더 낮았다.
