  • In recent years, the size of data set which we usually handle is enormous, so a lot of outliers could be included in data set. Therefore the robust procedures that automatically handle outliers become very importance issue. We consider the robust estimation problem of location parameter in the univariate case. In this paper, we propose a new method for defining robustness weights for the weighted mean based on the median distance of observations and compare its performance with several existing robust estimators by a simulation study. It turns out that the proposed method is very competitive.

  • The internet and wireless communication technologies are creating ubiquitous environments in which various services are expected anytime and anywhere. Many hardware facilities have been developed and system structures are suggested for mobile services to realize a ubiquitous computing environment with appropriate quality. But these applications are not designed in the consideration of the general capabilities to perform user's wireless and mobile communication/transaction. Consequently, different needs from users are not sufficiently satisfied yet. In this study, we suggest structure of the emerging network system for mobile commerce that provides users with seamless and ubiquitous environments using location information which exploit context-aware technology.

  • Many applications require users to log-in, some applications can allow users to use the same account is active on multiple devices at the same time. On location-based application that serves to record the movement of the position, account is active on multiple devices could not be permitted because it causes a different location data from multiple devices, so the location of the users become ambiguous. This paper describes a simple protocol to prevent users from using their accounts on multiple devices at the same time. This Protocol will turn off one account on a device when the account log-in on new devices.

  • This study aimed to identify the dimensions of benefits and costs that consumers perceive in utilizing locationbased applications (LBAs) on smartphones, and to distinguish consumer groups according to their perceptions of those benefits and costs. A web-based consumer survey was conducted-among consumers who had experience using LBAs. Four hundred participants were 20's to 40's, with 200 women and 200 men. Descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, t -tests, one-way analysis of variance, and cluster analysis were used for data analysis. The findings of this study are as follows: first, LBAs accounted for about 20% of the smartphone apps used by consumers. Second, factor analysis identified the underlying dimensions of the benefits and costs of smartphone LBAs. The underlying dimensions of benefits perceived by consumers were information/economic/convenience, entertainment and personalization. Privacy concerns, lack of trust and lack of behavioral control were the underlying dimensions of the perceived costs of LBAs. Third, ANOVA showed that the perceived benefits and costs of smartphone LBA services differed according to the characteristics of the consumer. Cluster analysis identified three distinctive consumer groups according to the levels of perceive costs and benefits of smartphone LBAs. The three groups were labeled the 'benefit-cost balanced group,' 'cost centered group,' and 'benefit centered group.'

  • Many applications in the area of location-based services and personal navigation require nowadays the location determination of a user not only in outdoor environment but also indoor. To locate a person or object in a building, systems that use either infrared, ultrasonic or radio signals, and visible light for optical tracking have been developed. The use of WiFi for location determination has the advantage that no transmitters or receivers have to be installed in the building like in the case of infrared and ultrasonic based location systems. WiFi positioning technology adopts IEEE802.11x standard, by observing the radio signals from access points installed inside a building. These access points can be found nowadays in our daily environment, e.g. in many office buildings, public spaces and in urban areas. The principle of operation of location determination using WiFi signals is based on the measurement of the signal strengths to the surrounding available access points at a mobile terminal (e.g. PDA, notebook PC). An estimate of the location of the terminal is then obtained on the basis of these measurements and a signal propagation model inside the building. The signal propagation model can be obtained using simulations or with prior calibration measurements at known locations in an offline phase. The most common location determination approach is based on signal propagation patterns, namely WiFi fingerprinting. In this paper the underlying technology is briefly reviewed followed by an investigation of two WiFi positioning systems. Testing of the system is performed in two localization test beds, one at the Vienna University of Technology and the second at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. First test showed that the trajectory of a moving user could be obtained with a standard deviation of about ${\pm}$ 3 m.

  • Location-based services have been expanded rapidly in local and overseas markets due to technological advances and increasing applications of wireless internet. Various researches have been made to manage efficiently the location information of moving objects. A basic location-based alert service provides alerting messages automatically when either entering or leaving a specific location and it is expected to become one of the most important location-based services. Location-based alert services require a location polling method to acquire current locations for a large number of moving objects. However, a simple periodical location polling method causes severe system overload because a system should keep updating location information of the moving objects ceaselessly. Most location polling algorithms for location-based alerting services are not suitable for mobile users with dynamic and unsteady moving patterns. In this paper, we propose an improved location polling algorithm for location-based alerting services to reduce the amount of location information acquisition and therefore, to decrease the system load. Various experiments show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms.

  • A location-aware system, which is capable to detect a user's whereabout in a region and provide real-time location information in outdoor environment is designed and fabricated, specifically using the GPS (global positioning system) as key technology in view of its stability and high precision in outdoor environment. Experiment is conducted to test this application in campus-based environment. Once GPS receiver detects specific location which is tagged with GPS coordinates, the system provides information relevant to that context and user can operate and react accordingly. Besides, this location-aware system is able to provide user with the route in order to get to a desired place by detecting the direction that the user is moving towards from his/her initial location. The mapping data is transferred via wireless LAN to PDA carried by the user as well as to the back-end system on real-time basis. The test result is analyzed and discussed to validate the effectiveness of using GPS in implementing this system and indicates future works that could be made to improve this prototype to be implemented in other applications, such as theme park, tourist attraction spot or recreational park.

  • Wireless Sensor Networks have been proposed for several location-dependent applications. For such systems, the cost and limitations of the hardware on sensing nodes prevent the use of range-based localization schemes that depend on absolute point to point distance estimates. Because coarse accuracy is sufficient for most sensor network applications, solutions in range-free localization are being pursued as a cost-effective alternative to more expensive range-based approaches. In this paper, we proposed a Coefficient Allocated DV-Hop (CA DV-Hop) algorithm which reduces node's location error by awarding a credit value with respect to number of hops of each anchor to an unknown node. Simulation results have verified the high estimation accuracy with our approach which outperforms the classical DV-Hop.

  • This research aims to show that the context adaptation system can be used to develop practical context-aware applications by developing a restaurant recommendation system based on location-awareness. In this research, we have designed and implemented a location-aware restaurant recommendation system which provides a customized restaurant recommendation service based on the user's current context. The context-adaptation engine adapts the application program according to the policy file as contexts are changed, and the application provides restaurant recommendation service based on the changed context like location.
