  • The multiplication region of an APD(Avalanche photodiode) plays a critical role in determining the gain, the multiplication noise, and the gain-bandwidth product. we compared and analyzed the local model and the non-local model for a 10Gb/s APD designing.

  • To restore image degraded by out-of-focus blur and additive noise, an iterative restoration is used. Acceleration parameter is usually applied equally to all over the image without considering the local characteristics of degraded images. As a result, the conventional methods are not effective in restoring severely degraded edge region and shows slow convergence rate. To solve this problem we propose an adaptive iterative restoration according to local degradation, in which the acceleration parameter has low value in flat region that is less degraded and high value in edge region that is more degraded. Through experiments, we verified that the proposed method showed better results with fast convergence rate, showed Visually better image in edge region and lower MSE than the conventional methods.

  • The purpose of this experimental research is to investigate the local heat transfer characteristics in the upward free water jet impinged on a downward flat plate of uniform heat flux. The inner shape of rectangular nozzle used was sine curve type and its contraction ratio of inlet to outlet area was five. Experimental parameters considered were Reynolds number, nozzle exit-flat plate distance, and level of supplementary water. Local Nusselt number was influenced by Reynolds number, Prandtl number, supplementary water level, and distance between the nozzle exit and flat plate. Within the impingement region, the Nusselt number has a maximum value on the nozzle center axis and decreases monotonically outward from center. Outside of the impingement region, on the other hand, the Nusselt number has a secondary peak near the position where the distance from nozzle center reaches four times the nozzle width. However if nozzle exit velocity exceeds 6.2 m/s, the secondary peak appears also in the impingement region. The empirical equation for the stagnation heat transfer is a function of Prandtl, Reynolds, and axial distance from the nozzle exit. The optimum level of supplementary water to augment the heat transfer rate at stagnation point was found to be twice the nozzle width.

  • We present a novel statistically adaptive method using the Minimum Description Length(MDL) principle for unsupervised segmentation of magnetic resonance(MR) images. In the method, Markov random filed(MRF) modeling of tissue region accounts for random noise. Intensity measurements on the local region defined by a window are modeled by a finite Gaussian mixture, which accounts for image inhomogeneities. The segmentation algorithm is based on an iterative conditional modes(ICM) algorithm, approximately finds maximum ${\alpha}$ posteriori(MAP) estimation, and estimates model parameters on the local region. The size of the window for parameter estimation and segmentation is estimated from the image using the MDL principle. In the experiments, the technique well reflected image characteristic of the local region and showed better results than conventional methods in segmentation of MR images with inhomogeneities, especially.

  • The effects of the local lifetime control on the characteristics of IGBT are investigated using the 2-dimensional device simulator, MEDICI. Many lumped resistive turn-off simulations are carried out to analyze the effects of the minority carrier lifetime, the width, and the position of the region with a reduced local minority carrier lifetime. As a result of these simulations, it is concluded that the on state voltage drop$(V_{CE,SAT})$ is only slightly increased while the switching behavior is greatly improved if the low lifetime region is properly set. And these results are compared with IGBTs having uniform lifetime.

  • In this study, the effect of channel flow in the concave surface on local heat transfer characteristics of array jets was investigated experimentally. A TLC method is employed to determine local heat transfer coefficients on the target plate and also flow visualization has been conducted to investigate the behavior of a row of impinging jets and array of impinging jets. Two different array patterns of impinging array jets devices are tested for Reynolds number(Re=10,000). In a row of impinging jets, secondary vortex is strongly maintained by main vortex at nozzle-to-plate distance of H/d=2. Therefore, the Nusselt number slowly decreased at the mid-way region between adjacent jets. In array jets, the local maximum Nusselt number region move further in the downstream direction due to the increase of channel flow velocity.

  • When artificial potential field approach is used to avoid obstacle, the problem can be occurred in case that manipulator selects the path which across over an obstacle among paths. In thiscase manipulator can't reach the desired goal form obstacle. This problem is a case of structual local minimum. so this paper proposes the method to solve structual local minimum in this case. The method is that the manipulator goes via temporary goal. This paper proposes that visual region concept to select the temporary goal. The temporary goal is selected on the border of the visual region. To prove its effectiveness, two simulation examples are done by two link manipulator in two dimension and by three link manipulator in three dimension.

  • It is important to completely understand heat/mass transfer from a flat plate because it is a basic element of heat/mass transfer. In the present study, local heat/mass transfer coefficient is obtained for two flow conditions to investigate the effect of boundary layer using the naphthalene sublimation technique. Obtained local heat/mass transfer coefficient is converted to dimensionless parameters such as Sherwood number, Stanton number and Colburn j-factor. These also are compared with correlations of laminar and turbulent heat/mass transfer from a flat plate. According to experimental results, local Sherwood number and local Stanton number are in much better agreement with the correlation of turbulent region rather than laminar region, which means analogy between heat/mass transfer and momentum transfer is more suitable for turbulent boundary layer. But average Sherwood number and average Colburn j-factor representing analogy between heat/mass transfer and momentum transfer are consistent with the correlation of laminar boundary layer as well as turbulent boundary layer.

  • A selective coding scheme is proposed that describes a method for coding image sequences distinguishing bits between background and target region. The suggested method initially estimates global motion parameters and local motion vectors. Then segmentation is performed with a hierarchical clustering scheme and a quadtree algorithm in order to divide the processing image into the backgraound and target region. Finally image coding is done by assigning more bits to the target region and less bits to background so that the target region may be reconstructed with high quality. Simulations show that the suggested algorithm performs well especially in the circumstances where background changes and target regionis small enough compared with that of background.

  • This paper reports the experimental study of the heat transfer characteristics of the wake region behind a cylinder in cross flow. Local heat transfer coefficient was measured from the stagnation point (θ=0°) to 180°, and the variation of Nu in the axial direction along the cylinder was also studied. The results show that the heft transfer rate at the rear (θ=180°) near the duct wall can increase as much as 58% over the 2 dimensional value at the center of the duct. The heat transfer profiles in the wake region also show distinct effects of the aspect ratio and the heat transfer boundary condition.
