In this paper, we develop a design methodology of granular-based neurocomputing networks realized with the aid of the clustering techniques. The objective of this paper is modeling and evaluation of approximation and generalization capability of the Linear-Type Superconducting Power Supply (LTSPS). In contrast with the plethora of existing approaches, here we promote a development strategy in which a topology of the network is predominantly based upon a collection of information granules formed on a basis of available experimental data. The underlying design tool guiding the development of the granular-based neurocomputing networks revolves around the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering method and the Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network. In contrast to "standard" Radial Basis Function neural networks, the output neuron of the network exhibits a certain functional nature as its connections are realized as local linear whose location is determined by the membership values of the input space with the aid of FCM clustering. To modeling and evaluation of performance of the linear-type superconducting power supply using the proposed network, we describe a detailed characteristic of the proposed model using a well-known NASA software project data.
This paper reports the numerical investigation conducted to study the influence of Local-Distortional (L-D) interaction mode buckling on post buckling strength erosion in fixed ended lipped channel cold formed steel columns. This investigation comprises of 81 column sections with various geometries and yield stresses that are carefully chosen to cover wide range of strength related parametric ratios like (i) distortional to local critical buckling stress ratio ($0.91{\leq}F_{CRD}/F_{CRL}{\leq}4.05$) (ii) non dimensional local slenderness ratio ($0.88{\leq}{\lambda}_L{\leq}3.54$) (iii) non-dimensional distortional slenderness ratio ($0.68{\leq}{\lambda}_D{\leq}3.23$) and (iv) yield to non-critical buckling stress ratio (0.45 to 10.4). The numerical investigation is carried out by conducting linear and non-linear shell finite element analysis (SFEA) using ABAQUS software. The non-linear SFEA includes both geometry and material non-linearity. The numerical results obtained are deeply analysed to understand the post buckling mechanics, failure modes and ultimate strength that are influenced by L-D interaction with respect to strength related parametric ratios. The ultimate strength data obtained from numerical analysis are compared with (i) the experimental tests data concerning L-D interaction mode buckling reported by other researchers (ii) column strength predicted by Direct Strength Method (DSM) column strength curves for local and distortional buckling specified in AISI S-100 (iii) strength predicted by available DSM based approaches that includes L-D interaction mode failure. The role of flange width to web depth ratio on post buckling strength erosion is reported. Then the paper concludes with merits and limitations of codified DSM and available DSM based approaches on accurate failure strength prediction.

Free-field ground motion during earthquake is significantly affected by the local site conditions and it is essential for the seismic design to perform the ground response analysis In this study, ground response analyses based on the equivalent linear method were carried out to evaluate the effects of various ground conditions on the site amplification. Four major factors including the depth of the site(very soft and dense soil), the impedance ratio between soil layer and bed rock, linear analysis versus equivalent linear analysis, and the location of soft soil layer were deeply discussed. Based on the analysis results, the importance of various local site conditions on the site amplification was emphasized.
A linearly tapered, doubly symmetric thin-walled closed member, such as power-transmission towers and tourist towers, are often characterized by local variation in mass and/or rigidity, due to additional mass and rigidity. On the preliminary stage of design the closed-form solution is more effective than the finite element method. In order to propose approximate solutions, the discontinuous and local variation in mass and/or rigidity is treated continuously by means of a usable function proposed by Takabatake(1988, 1991, 1993). Thus, a simplified analytical method and approximate solutions for the free and forced transverse vibrations in linear elasticity are demonstrated in general by means of the Galerkin method. The solutions proposed here are examined from the results obtained using the Galerkin method and Wilson-${\theta}$ method and from the results obtained using NASTRAN.
To study the relationship between the levels of chemical pollutants and the number of daily total hospital admissions for respiratory diseases and to find the effect of temperature/relative humidity on the admission number, Wong et al. [17] introduced the varying-coefficient single-index model (VCSIM). As pointed out, it is a popular multivariate nonparametric fitting technique. However, the tests of the model have not been very well developed. In this paper, based on the estimators obtained by the local linear technique, the average method and the one-step back-fitting technique in the VCSIM, the generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) tests for varying-coefficient parts on the VCSIM are established. Under the null hypotheses the new proposed GLR tests follow the $\chi^2$-distribution asymptotically with scale constant and degree of freedom independent of the nuisance parameters, known as Wilks phenomenon. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the test procedure empirically. A real example is used to illustrate the performance of the testing approach.

The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) has been a popular regression estimator with simultaneous variable selection. However, LASSO does not have the oracle property and its robust version is needed in the case of heavy-tailed errors or serious outliers. We propose a robust penalized regression estimator which provide a simultaneous variable selection and estimator. It is based on the rank regression and the non-convex penalty function, the smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) function which has the oracle property. The proposed method combines the robustness of the rank regression and the oracle property of the SCAD penalty. We develop an efficient algorithm to compute the proposed estimator that includes a SCAD estimate based on the local linear approximation and the tuning parameter of the penalty function. Our estimate can be obtained by the least absolute deviation method. We used an optimal tuning parameter based on the Bayesian information criterion and the cross validation method. Numerical simulation shows that the proposed estimator is robust and effective to analyze contaminated data.
We estimate nonlinear impulse responses of stock indices by asset class by the Local Projection method as suggested by Jorda (2005) to compute impulse responses. The method estimates impulse responses without the specification and estimation of the underlying multivariate dynamic system unlike the usual way of vector autoregression(VAR). It estimates Local Projections at each period of interest rather than extrapolating into increasingly distant horizons with the advantages of easy estimation and non-linear flexible specification. The Local Projection method adequately captures the nonlinearity and asymmetry of the impulse responses of the stock indices compared to those from VARs.
Digital images of cultural relics captured using line scan cameras present limitations due to uneven intensity and low contrast. To address this issue, this report proposes a colour linear array image enhancement method that can maintain a constant colour. First, the colour linear array image is converted from the red-green-blue (RGB) colour space into the hue-saturation-intensity colour space, and the three components of hue, saturation, and intensity are separated. Subsequently, the hue and saturation components are held constant while the intensity component is processed using the established intensity compensation model to eliminate the uneven intensity of the image. On this basis, the contrast of the intensity component is enhanced using an improved local contrast enhancement method. Finally, the processed image is converted into the RGB colour space. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can significantly improve the visual effect of colour linear array images. Moreover, the objective quality evaluation parameters are improved compared to those determined using existing methods.

This paper proposes a novel linearization method for Takagi.sugeno (TS) fuzzy model. A T-S fuzzy controller consists of linear controllers based on local linear models and the local linear controllers cannot be designed independently because of overall stability conditions which are usually conservative. To use linear control theories easily for T-S fuzzy system, the linearization of T-S fuzzy model is required. However, The linearization of T-S fuzzy model is difficult to be achieved by using existing linearization methods because fuzzy rules and membership functions are included in T-S fuzzy models. So, a new linearization method is proposed for the T-S fuzzy system based on the idea of T-S fuzzy state transformation. For the T-S fuzzy system linearized with uncertainties, a robust optimal controller with the robustness of sliding model control(SMC) is designed.
This paper presents a complex stochastic wheelbase preview control method of a motorcycle suspension based on hierarchical modeling method. As usual, a vehicle suspension system is controlled as a whole body. In this method, a motorcycle suspension with five Degrees of Freedom(DOF) is dealt with two local independent 2-DOF suspensions according to the hierarchical modeling method. The central dynamic equations that harmonize local relations are deduced. The vertical and pitch accelerations of the suspension center are treated as center control objects, and two local semi-active control forces can be obtained. In example, a real time Linear Quadratic Gaussian(LQG) algorithm is adopted for the front suspension and the combination of the wheelbase preview and LQG control method is designed for the rear suspension. The results of simulation show that the control strategy has less calculating time and is convenient to adopt different control strategies for front and rear suspensions. The method proposed in this paper provides a new way for the vibration control of multi-wheel vehicles.
