This paper analyzes a sequential estimator with flexible structure for rapid acquisition of the m-sequence signals. If the received PN chips stored in the estimator's internal registers as initial loading values include one error, this chip with error can be corrected through multiple local PN code generators to achieve high-speed acquisition performance. Hamming distance between regenerated local PN codes from the proposed system and received PN code is compared with given threshold to choose a possible correct path and to declare success of the code acquisition. Using signal flow graph, average acquisition time that depends on detection and false alarm probability is calculated. By modifying generally used matched filter structure for PN code acquisition, the proposed system provides flexible structure and rapid acquisition process.

The bandwidth minimization problem (BMP) has been classified as NP-complete because the polynomial time algorithm to find the optimal solution has been unknown yet. This paper suggests polynomial time heuristic algorithm is to find the solution of bandwidth minimization problem. To find the minimum bandwidth ${\phi}^*=_{min}{\phi}(G)$, ${\phi}(G)=_{max}\{{\mid}f(v_i)-f(v_j):v_i,v_j{\in}E\}$ for given graph G=(V,E), m=|V|,n=|E|, the proposed algorithm sets the maximum degree vertex $v_i$ in graph G into global central point (GCP), and labels the median value ${\lceil}m+1/2{\rceil}$ between [1,m] range. The graph G is partitioned into subgroup, the maximum degree vertex in each subgroup is set to local central point (LCP), and we adjust the label of LCP per each subgroup as possible as minimum distance from GCP. The proposed algorithm requires O(mn) time complexity for label to all of vertices. For various twelve graph, the proposed algorithm can be obtains the same result as known optimal solution. For one graph, the proposed algorithm can be improve on known solution.
A dynamic elastic local buckling analysis is presented for a pile subjected to an axial impact load. The pile is assumed to be geometrically perfect. The interactions between the pile and the surrounding soil are taken into account. The interactions include the normal pressure and skin friction on the surface of the pile due to the resistance of the soil. The analysis also includes the influence of the propagation of stress waves through the length of the pile to the distance at which buckling is initiated and the mass of the pile. A perturbation technique is used to determine the critical buckling length and the associated critical time. As a special case, the explicit expression for the buckling length of a pile is obtained without considering soil resistance and compared with the one obtained for a column by means of an alternative method. Numerical results obtained show good agreement with the experimental results. The effects of the normal pressure and the skin friction due to the surrounding soil, self-weight, stiffness and geometric dimension of the cross section on the critical buckling length are discussed. The sudden change of buckling modes is further considered to show the 'snap-through' phenomenon occurring as a result of stress wave propagation.
Local reinforcement in dowel type timber joints is essential to improve ductility, to increase load carrying capacity and to reduce the risk of brittle failure, especially in the case of using solid dowel. In many types of reinforcing materials available today, DVW (densified veneer wood) has been demonstrated to be the most advantages in terms of compatibility, embedding performance and ductility. Preliminary studies show that using appropriately sized DVW discs bonded into the timber interfaces may be an effective way to reinforce the connection. In this paper, non-linear 3-dimensional finite element models, incorporating orthotropic and non-linear material behaviour, have been developed to simulate structural performance of the timber joints locally reinforced by DVW discs. Different contact algorithms were applied to simulate contact conditions in the joints. The models were validated by the corresponding structural tests. Correlation between the experimental results and the finite element simulations is reasonably good. Using validated finite element models, parametric studies were undertaken to investigate effects of the DVW disc sizes and the end distances on shear stresses and normal stresses in a possible failure plane in the joint.
Four polymorphic allozymes were used for genetic analysis of overwintering populations of field diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Linne). Different allele frequencies were found among three local populations of Andong, Youngchon, and Yangsan in all loci. Two allozyme loci (acid phosphatase and phosphoglucomutase) showed significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in allele frequencies among these populations. Estimated Nei's genetic distance varied from 0.0151 between Yangsan and Youngchon to 0.0877 between Andong and Youngchon. Compared with the previous genetic distances in this moth, a little higher genetic differentiation among these overwintering populations suggests that there would be a specific genetic bottleneck in each local population during overwintering period.

The effects of concave hemispherical surface curvature on the local heat transfer from a turbulent round impinging jet were experimentally investigated. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation on the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystals for the measurement of the surface temperature. The Reynolds number ranges from Re=11,000 to 50,000, the nozzle-to- surface distance from L/d=2 to 10, and the surface curvature from D/d=6 to 12.The present results are also compared to those for the flat plate case. In the experiment, the local Nusselt numbers tend to increase in all regions with an increasing surface curvature. The maximum Nusselt number for all Reynolds numbers occurred at L/d .ident. 6 and a second maximum in the Nusselt number occurred at R/d .ident. 2 for both Re=23,000 and Re=50,000 in the case of L/d=2 and for Re=50,000 only in the case of L/d=4. Meanwhile, as the surface curvature increases, the value of the secondary maximum Nusselt number decreases. All the other cases exhibit monotonically decreasing values of the Nusselt number along the curved surface. The stagnation point Nusselt numbers are well correlated with Re, L/d, and D/d.

A numerical study has been performed on the natural convection heat transfer from a conducting tube with two axial fins to a surrounding cylinder. As increasing dimensionless fin length ($L_F$), the center of flow moves to the bottom of annulus and the recirculating flow rate is decreased. The maximum local Nusselt number of conducting tube appears at ${\theta}=180^{\circ}$ for $L_F=0.0$, but at ${\theta}=130^{\circ}$ for $L_F{\geq}0.3$ and that of outer cylinder appears at ${\theta}=13^{\circ}$ for $L_F{\leq}0.6$ but at ${\theta}=33^{\circ}$ for $L_F=1.0$. The fin temperature is decreased by increasing radial distance and the temperature distribution of the downward fin is generally less than that of the upward fin. By increasing fin length, the local Nusselt number of the upward fin appears negative values for $L_F=1.0$, but appears positive values for $L_F<0.8$, and that of the downward fin appears positive values.

This paper proposes a gradation image processing method for the development of a Road Sign Recognition Platform (RReP), which aims to facilitate the rapid and accurate management and surveying of approximately 160,000 road signs installed along the highways, national roadways, and local roads in the cities, districts (gun), and provinces (do) of Korea. RReP is based on GPS(Global Positioning System), IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit), INS(Inertial Navigation System), DMI(Distance Measurement Instrument), and lasers, and uses an imagery information collection/classification module to allow the automatic recognition of signs, the collection of shapes, pole locations, and sign-type data, and the creation of road sign registers, by extracting basic data related to the shape and sign content, and automated database design. Image division and merging, which were applied in this study, produce superior results compared with local binarization method in terms of speed. At the results, larger texts area were found in images, the accuracy of text recognition was improved when images had been gradated. Multi-threshold values of natural scene images are used to improve the extraction rate of texts and figures based on pattern recognition.
Problem of the diffuse radiation (DFR) transfer is solved exactly for pure hydrogen nebulae of uniform density, and accuracies of the on-the-spot (OTS) approximation are critically examined. For different values of density and spectral types of the central star, we have calculated the degree of ionization and the kinetic temperature of electrons as functions of distance from the central star, and compared them with the corresponding results of the OTS approximation. At most locations inside an HII region. the DFR ionizes considerable amount of hydrogen; therefore, the OTS approximation under-estimates the size of ionized regions. The exact treatment of the DFR transfer results in an about 10 to 20 percent increase in the classical $Str{\ddot{o}}mgren$ radius. The OTS approximation overestimates the local heating rate by raising the density of neutral hydogens. Consequently, it predicts higher values for the local electron temperature. The OTS approximation also exaggerates the dependence of electron temperature on density. When the hydrogen density is changed from $10/cm^3$ to $10^3/cm^3$ with an 06.5V star, the OTS approximation shows an about 3,000 K difference in the electron temperature, while the exact treatment of the DFR-transfer reduces the difference to about 1,000 K. The OTS approximation fails to demonstrate the brightening of the electron temperature close to the ionization boundary.
One-dimensional rod theory is very effective as a simplified analytical approach to large scale or complicated structures such as high-rise buildings, in preliminary design stages. It replaces an original structure by a one-dimensional rod which has an equivalent stiffness in terms of global properties. The mechanical behavior of structures composed of distinct constituents of different stiffness such as coupled walls with opening is significantly governed by the local variation of stiffness. Furthermore, in structures with setback the distribution of the longitudinal stress behaves remarkable nonlinear behavior in the transverse-wise. So, the author proposed the two-dimensional rod theory as an extended version of the rod theory which accounts for the two-dimensional local variation of structural stiffness; viz, variation in the transverse direction as well as longitudinal stiffness distribution. This paper proposes how to deal with the two-dimensional rod theory for structures with setback. Validity of the proposed theory is confirmed by comparison with numerical results of computational tools in the cases of static, free vibration and forced vibration problems for various structures. The transverse-wise nonlinear distribution of the longitudinal stress due to the existence of setback is clarified to originate from the long distance from setback.
