A seismic damaged bridge may be hit again by a strong aftershock or another earthquake in a short interval before the repair work has been done. However, discussions about the impact of the unrepaired damages on the residual earthquake resistance of a steel bridge are very scarce at present. In this paper, nonlinear time-history analysis of a steel arch bridge was performed using multi-scale hybrid model. Two strong historical records of main shock-aftershock sequences were taken as the input ground motions during the dynamic analysis. The strain response, local deformation and the accumulation of plasticity of the bridge with and without unrepaired seismic damage were compared. Moreover, the effect of earthquake sequence on crack initiation caused by low-cycle fatigue of the steel bridge was investigated. The results show that seismic damage has little impact on the overall structural displacement response during the aftershock. The residual local deformation, strain response and the cumulative equivalent plastic strain are affected to some extent by the unrepaired damage. Low-cycle fatigue of the steel arch bridge is not induced by the earthquake sequences. Damage indexes of low-cycle fatigue predicted based on different theories are not exactly the same.
This paper aims to investigate vibration frequency decrease (vibration period elongation) of reinforced concrete (RC) structure with unreinforced infill wall and reinforced infill wall exposed to progressively increased artificial earthquake load on shaking table. For this purpose, two shaking table experiments were selected as a case study. Shaking table experiments were carried on 1:1 scaled prototype one bay one storey RC structure with infill walls. The purpose of this shaking table experiment sequence is to assess local behavior and progressive collapse mechanism. Frequency decrease and eigen-vector evolution are directly related to in-plane and out-of-plane bearing capacities of infill wall enclosure with reinforced concrete frame. Firstly, frequency decrease-damage relationship was evaluated on the base of experiment results. Then, frequency decrease and stiffness degradation were evaluated with applied Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) by considering strength deterioration. Lastly, eigenvector evolution-local damage and eigenvector evolution-frequency decrease relationship was investigated. Five modes were considered while evaluating damage and frequency decrease of the tested specimens. The relationship between frequency decrease, stiffness degradation and damage level were presented while comparing with Unreinforced Brick Infill (URB) and Reinforced Infill wall with Bed Joint Reinforcement (BJR) on the base of natural vibration frequency.

A spectral element model-based structural damage identification method (SDIM) was derived in the previous study by using the damage-induced changes in frequency response functions. However the previous SDIM often provides poor damage identification results because the nonlinear effect of damage magnitude was not taken into account. Thus, this paper improves the previous SDIM by taking into account the nonlinear effect of damage magnitude. Accordingly an iterative solution method is used in this study to solve the nonlinear matrix equation for local damages distribution. The present SDIM is evaluated through the numerically simulated damage identification tests.
Purpose: In this study, a strong wind damage prediction function was developed in order to be used as a contingency during disaster management (preventive-preventive-response-recovery). Method: The predicted strong wind damage function proposed in this study took into account the re-enactment boy power, weather data and local characteristics at the time of damage. The meteorological data utilized the wind speed, temperature, and damage history observed by the Korea Meteorological Administration, the disaster year, and the recovery costs, population, vinyl house area, and farm water contained in the disaster report as factors to reflect the regional characteristics. Result: The function developed in this study reflected the predicted weather factors and local characteristics based on the history of strong wind damage in the past, and the extent of damage can be predicted in a short time. Conclusion: Strong wind damage prediction functions developed in this study are believed to be available for effective disaster management, such as decision making by policy-makers, deployment of emergency personnel and disaster prevention resources.

The paper presents a signal-based damage detection algorithm of ARX model using dynamic acceleration data. An ARX model correlates acceleration data measured at two locations in a structure by considering those two sets of data as input and output signals. For detecting damage, the error between the measured data and the predicted response from the defined ARX model is computed in time and used for a statistical evaluation. A normal distribution function from the error in time is constructed and its statistical characteristic values are used for the evaluation of damage. By comparing the normal distribution functions before and after damage, three different types of damage indices are proposed. The efficiency and limitation of the proposed algorithm with the statistical evaluation of damage indices have been examined and discussed through laboratory experiments.

This study predicted damage areas due to landslides in Gangwon Province and estimated the scale of damage to roads, buildings, and forests on the local government level. By using old research findings to predict landslides, the study established techniques to make maps for landslide vulnerability, occurrence possibility, and risk. The scale of damage to roads, buildings, and forests was estimated at the local government level by making a landslide risk map for 100mm, 200mm, and 300mm of accumulated rainfall. The scale of damage to roads, buildings, and forests was estimated to be greatest in Hongcheon-gun, Jeongseon-gun, and Hongcheon-gun, respectively, in case of 100mm~200mm accumulated rainfall, in Chuncheon City, Pyeongchang-gun, and Hongcheon-gun, respectively, in case of 200mm~300mm accumulated rainfall, and in Hongcheon-gun in case of 300mm accumulated rainfall or more. Those estimation results of scale of damage by landslides at the local government level will help to set priorities in landslide prevention and provide basic data for budget decisions.
The piezoelectric thin film sensor has good characteristics to observe the impact responses of composite structures. The capabilities for monitoring impact behavior of Gr/Ep laminates subjected to damage-induced impact using the PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensor were examined. For a series of low-velocity impact tests from low energy to damage-induced energy, simulated sensor signals were compared with measured signals and the PVDF film sensor. Local impact damages(matrix cracking and delamination) were found at three impact tests, but the measured signals agreed well with the simulated sensor signals based on the linear relationship between the impact forces and the PVDF film sensor signals. And the inverse technique was applied to reconstruct the impact forces using the PVDF film sensor signals. Most of reconstructed impact forces had good agreement with the measured forces. The comparison results showed that the local damage due. to low-velocity impact didn't disturb the global impact responses of composite laminates and the reconstruction of impact forces from PVDF sensor signals wasn't affected by the local damage.

The influences of stress triaxiality on ductile fracture have been investigated for various specimens and structures. With respect to a transferability issue, recently, the interests on local approaches reflecting micromechanical specifics are increased again due to rapid progress of computational environments. In this paper, the applicability of the local approaches has been examined through a series of finite element analyses incorporating modified GTN and Rousselier models as well as fracture toughness tests. The ductile crack growth of nuclear carbon steels is assessed to verify the transferability among compact tension (CT) specimens with different in-plane size. At first, the basic material constants were calibrated for standard CT specimens and used to predict fracture resistance (J-R) curves of larger CT specimens. Then, the in-plane size effects were examined by comparing the numerically estimated J-R curves with the experimentally determined ones. The assessment results showed that the in-plane size effect should be considered for realistic engineering application and the damage models might be used as useful tool for ductile fracture evaluation.

During the last two decades, many researchers investigated influences of stress triaxiality on ductile fracture for various specimens and structures. With respect to a transferability issue, the local approach reflecting micro-mechanical specifics is one of effective methods to predict constraint effects. In this paper, the applicability of the local approach was examined through a series of finite element analyses incorporating modified GTN (Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman) and Rousselier models as well as fracture toughness tests. To achieve this goal, fracture resistance (J-R) curves of several types of compact tension (CT) specimens with various crack length, with various thickness and with/without 20% side- grooves were estimated. Then. the constraint effects were examined by comparing the numerically estimated J-R curves with experimentally determined ones. The assessment results showed that the damage models might be used as useful tool for fracture toughness estimation and both the crack length and thickness effects should be considered for realistic structural integrity evaluation.

This study aims to recognize damage indicators of typhoon and to develop damage function's indicators, using information derived from the actual loss of typhoon Maemi. As typhoons engender significant financial damage all over the world, governments and insurance companies, local or global, develop hurricane risk assessment models and use it in quantifying, avoiding, mitigating, or transferring the risks. For the reason, it is crucial to understand the importance of the risk assessment model for typhoons, and the importance of reflecting local vulnerabilities for more advanced evaluation. Although much previous research on the economic losses associated with natural disasters has identified the risk indicators that are indispensable, more comprehensive research addressing the relationship between vulnerability and economic loss are still called for. Hence this study utilizes and analyzes the actual loss record of the typhoon Maemi provided by insurance companies to fill such gaps. In this study, natural disaster indicators and basic building information indicators are used in order to generate the vulnerability functions; and the results and indicators suggest a practical approach to create the vulnerability functions for insurance companies and administrative tasks, while reflecting the financial loss and local vulnerability of the actual buildings.
