  • This paper focuses on contention-based medium access control (MAC) protocols used in wireless local area networks. We propose a novel MAC protocol called adaptive backoff tuning MAC (ABTMAC) based on IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). In our proposed MAC protocol, we utilize a fixed transmission attempt rate and each node dynamically adjusts its backoff window size considering the current network status. We determined the appropriate transmission attempt rate for both cases where the request-to-send/clear-to-send mechanism was and was not employed. Robustness against performance degradation caused by the difference between desired and actual values of the attempt rate parameter is considered when setting it. The performance of the protocol is evaluated analytically and through simulations. These results indicate that a wireless network utilizing ABTMAC performs better than one using IEEE 802.11 DCF.

  • This paper presents a new obstacle-avoidance method for mobile robots. This approach, called the FEB (Fast Elastic Band) method, has been developed and successfully tested on the experimental mobile robot PHOPE-1S. The FEB method eliminates the shortcomings of the elastic band method previously introduced, yet retains all the advantages of its predecessor. The FEB algorithm is computationally efficient, and it allows continuous and fast motion of the mobile robot without stopping for obstacles. The FEB-controlled mobile robot traverses very densely cluttered obstacle courses and is able to pass through narrow openings or narrow corridors without oscillations. The results of the simulation and experiment have verified the validity of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents an attitude determination algorithm for the local level strapdown inertial navigation where the body the earth and the transport rate can be calculated separately using a DCM computation scheme, Also presented is a velocity determination algorithm taking into account the attitude variation caused by he change of the navigation frame. The proposed algorithm are implemented using three samples of the velocity and the angle within the integration interval.

  • The dynamic window approach(DWA) is a well known technique for reactive collision avoidance. It shows safe and efficient performance in real-world experiments. However, a robot can get stuck in local minima because no information about the connectivity of the free space is used to determine the motion. The global DWA can solve this problem of local minima by adding a navigation function. Even with the global DWA, it is still difficult for a robot to execute an abrupt change in its direction, for example, entering from the corridor to a doorway. This paper proposes a modified global DWA using the included angles of waypoints extracted from an optimal path. This scheme enables the robot to decelerate in advance before turning into the doorway. Therefore the robot can reach the goal position more safely and efficiently at high speeds.

  • In this paper, a face detection method for interactive TV control system using a new feature, edge histogram feature, with a support vector machine(SVM) in the near-infrared(NIR) images is proposed. The edge histogram feature is extracted using 16-directional edge intensity and a histogram. Compared to the previous method using local binary pattern(LBP) feature, the proposed method using edge histogram feature has better performance in both smaller feature size and lower equal error rate(EER) for face detection experiments in NIR databases.

  • In the clinical state of oligometastases or oligorecurrence, a transitional state between localized and widespread systemic disease, local control of the disease may yield improved systemic control. Radiotherapy may be a good means for controlling oligometastatic tumors, particularly in very old patients for whom surgery may be infeasible. A combination of systemic therapy and local therapy is necessary to prevent systemic progression. Some kinds of cancers found in the elderly are known to be somewhat indolent for systemic progression. So, for very old patients who refuse or cannot tolerate chemotherapy, the use of radical radiotherapy alone to treat oligorecurrences may be very helpful. We successfully treated an 87-year-old patient who had been diagnosed with oligorecurrences three times over six years with radiotherapy alone. The patient is now, about four years after his first radiotherapy for liver metastasis, alive without any evidence of cancer and with fully active performance status.

  • This paper proposes a new measure of cost function ruggedness in local optimization with DEAS. DEAS is a computational optimization method developed since 2002 and has been applied to various engineering fields with success. Since DEAS is a recent optimization method which is rarely introduced in Korean, this paper first provides a brief overview and description of DEAS. In minimizing cost function with this non-gradient method, information on function shape measured automatically will enhance search capability. Considering the search strategies of DEAS are well designed with binary matrix structures, analysis of search behaviors will produce beneficial shape information. This paper deals with a simple quadratic function contained with various magnitudes of noise, and DEAS finds local minimum yielding ruggedness measure of given cost function. The proposed shape information will be directly used in improving DEAS performance in future work.

  • One of the devices to prevent separated flow over a wing or a flap at high angle of attack is a vortex generator. In the present work, we numerically study the flow around a low-profile or micro vortex generator whose height is less than local boundary layer thickness which can delay separation with a minimum drag penalty owing to its very small wetted surface area. As a first step toward a parametric study to efficiently design this MVG flow control system, we simulate the flow around a single MVG on a flat plate. For the simulation, we employ OpenFOAM with Launder-Sharma ${\kappa}$-epsilon model. The analysis results are validated by comparing with experimental results of a rectangular MVG at an angle of attack of 10 degrees whose height is 20% of local boundary layer. Important results and aspects of this numerical study are discussed. We also simulate the flow around rectangular, triangular and trapezoidal MVGs and the results are compared

  • A new algorithm for gradual scene change detection in MPEG based frame sequences is proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm is based on the fact that most of gradual curves can be characterized by variance distributions of edge information in the frame sequences. Average edge frame sequences are obtained by performing "sober" edge detection. Features are extracted by comparing variances with those of local blocks in the average edge frames. Those features are further processed by the opening operation to obtain smoothing variance curves. The lowest variance in the local frame sequences is chosen as a gradual detection point. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides 85% precision and 86% recall rate fur gradual scene changes.

  • It is widely known that optimal control techniques are useful to measure the performance of macroeconomic policy. This paper examines how the method could be applies them to the evaluation of the public investment expenditures conducted by the local government of Choongbook Province in Korea. The numerical example illustrates the usefulness of the methods for the evaluation of the regional economic policies suggesting the main findings as follows: (1) If the local government of Choongbook Province had increased the public investment expenditures allowing the budget deficits for the first three to four years during the period between 1985 and 1990, its GRDP would have early risen to the ratio of more than three percent of Korea's total GDP. (2) The additonal welfare losses incurred by not following the optimal policy were 0.191 in 1986, 0.607 in 1987, 1.585 in 1988, and 0.132 in 1989, indicating that the public investment policy proves to be the best in 1989 and the worst in 1988.
