In this paper, a half-scaled substructure test was performed to evaluate the buckling and structural safety of an existing transmission tower subjected to wind load. A loading scheme was devised to reproduce the dead and wind loads of a prototype transmission tower, which uses a triangular jig that is mounted on the reduced model to which the similarity law of a half length was applied. As a result of the preliminary numerical analysis carried out to evaluate the stability of a specimen for the design load, is was confirmed that the calculated axial forces of tower leg members were distributed to $80{\sim}90%$ of an admissible buckling load. When the substructured transmission tower was loaded by 270% of its maximum admissible buckling load, it was failed due to the local buckling that is occurred in joints with weak constraints for out-of-plane behavior of leg members. By inspection of load-displacement curves, displacements and strains of members, it is considered that this local buckling was due to additional eccentric force by unbalanced deformation because the time that is reached to yielding stress due to the bending moment is different at each point of a same section.
The design of box girders requires the determinations the buckling stress of the flange and the webs. Existing design equations available in codes of practice ignore the interactions between the box girder components. The paper illustrates the influence of the geometric interaction on the buckling stress of box girders. Generalized equations are first derived in terms of the web the flange geometric properties. Industrial examples are then presented showing the variation of the flange buckling stress for various stiffening configurations. The influence of the flange/web proportions on the buckling stress of box girder components is also highlighted. It is shown that buckling strength of the flange is largely affected by the restraints imposed by the webs or attached diaphragms. Graphs are presented showing various limiting states of box girders. These graphs are useful to use in practice in order to achieve economical and efficient design of box girders and rationally predict local buckling stress.
In this study, the computationally efficient inelastic buckling analysis program is developed to be used as the research tool in finding buckling strength of inelastic members. The program can determine buckling loads and buckled shapes of elastic and inelastic members which failed by flexural, lateral-torsional and/or local buckling. It can analyze singly and doubly symmetric I-shape members. In the program, the web of the member is modeled using the plate element and the flanges are modeled by beam elements. Multilinear isotropic hardening rule and the incremental theory of plasticity are used to simulate the inelastic stress-strain relationship from material tests. The program is verified using theoretical solutions and experimental results. The results from the program show good agreement with those from experiments and theory.

Recently, there have been studies about the increasing effect on the local plate buckling strength of flat plates when longitudinally stiffened with closed-section ribs and an approximate solution to quantitatively estimate these effects were suggested for flat plates. Since there are few studies to utilize such increasing effect on curved panels and a proper design method is not proposed, thus, this study aims to numerically evaluate such effect due to the rotational stiffness of closed-section ribs on curved panels and to propose an approximate method for estimating the buckling strength. Three-dimensional finite element models were set up using a general structural analysis program ABAQUS and a series of parametric numerical analyses were conducted in order to examine the variation of buckling stresses along with the rotational stiffness of closed-section ribs. By using a methodology that combine the strength increment factor due to the restraining effect by closed-section ribs and the buckling coefficient of the panel curvature, the approximate solutions for the estimation of buckling strength were suggested. The validity of the proposed methods was verified through a comparative study with the numerical analysis results.

I-type girders are widely applied as very economical sections in plate girder bridges. There has been research on developing composite laminated panels, curved plates reinforced with closed-end ribs, and new forms of ribs and compression flanges for steel box girders. However, there is a limitation in analyzing the exact cause of local buckling caused by an I-type girder's webs. Therefore, an I-type girder's web was modeled using the finite element analysis program LUSAS 17.0 before and after reinforcement. We checked for the minimum thickness criteria presented in the Korea highway bridge design code, and the cause of buckling after performing a linear elastic buckling analysis of dead and live loads was analyzed. Before reinforcement, an eigenvalue (λ1) at the 1st mode was 0.7025, the critical buckling load was smaller than the applied load, and there is a buckling. After reinforcement, when applying vertical and horizontal stiffeners to the web part of the girder at support, a Nodal line was formed, the eigenvalue was 1.5272, and buckling stability was secured. To improve buckling trace of the girder at the support, an additional plate was applied to the web at the support to ensure visual and structural safety, but buckling occurs at center of web. The eigenvalue (λ1) was 3.5299, and this method is efficient for reinforcing the web of the support.

Because of their high out-of-plane and in-planes strength, trapezoidally corrugated plates have been increasingly used in buildings and bridges. If corrugated plates are used as the web of plate girders or prestressed concrete box girders, the flanges take most of the bending stress. On the other hand, the corrugated plate web supports shear stress due to the accordion effect. The corrugated plate web could fail by three different buckling modes: global, local, or interactive shear buckling. To determine the effects of geometric parameters on the buckling capacity of the corrugated plates, a parametric study was performed using finite dement method. The analysis results showed that the buckling capacity and modes depend on individual parameters as well as combinations of parameters.
Steel tubes have an efficient shape with large second moment of inertia relative to their light weight. One of the main problems of these members is their low buckling resistance caused from having thin walls. In this study, steel foams with high strength over weight ratio is used to fill the steel tube to beneficially modify the response of steel tubes. The linear eigenvalue and plastic collapse FE analysis is done on steel foam filled tube under pure compression and three point bending simulation. It is shown that steel foam improves the maximum strength and the ability of energy absorption of the steel tubes significantly. Different configurations with different volume of steel foam and composite behavior is investigated. It is demonstrated that there are some optimum configurations with more efficient behavior. If composite action between steel foam and steel increases, the strength of the element will improve, in a way that, the failure mode change from local buckling to yielding.
Notwithstanding a considerable body of references in the literature on the buckling response of conical shell structures, it seems imperative to provide further insight on the buckling response of locally imperfect steel cones. This paper contains different simulations including non-linear FE analysis and discusses the influence of dent imperfection on the buckling load of these structures subject to external pressure. Data of the present work are evaluated against available experimental results, codes and recommendations and the effect of the local damages is exhaustively set forth. It is also found that the employed FE program can reliably predict the structural response of locally damaged conical shells.

A timber lattice roof, which has around 30m span, was constructed. In order to figure out the realistic buckling load level, the structural analysis of this roof structure was performed especially by stiffness of connection with various asymmetric snow load. Due to the characteristics of application of snow load, the load combinations of snow should be considered not only global area but also local part so that the critical buckling load could be observed as easy as possible. Geometrical imperfection was simulated to consider inaccurate shape of structure. And then nonlinear analysis were performed. Finally, this paper could investigate that the asymmetric snow load with the lower level stiffness of connection decreased the level of buckling load significantly.

In this paper, the wrinkling behavior of vertically creased corner-loaded square membranes was studied using geometrically nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The membranes were modeled using shell elements, and the meshes were seeded with semi-random geometrical imperfection to instigate the buckling deformation. A pristine and creased membranes with various initial deployment angles were considered in the analyses and the results were compared. Results showed that local wrinkles initiated near the corner where the higher load was applied, which grew to form a single diagonal global wrinkle as the load ratio increased. It was also found that the local wrinkle initiation and the global wrinkle formation were significantly dependent on the initial deployment angles.
