Finite element based modeling and thermal dynamic analysis of functionally graded graphene reinforced beams

  • In the present research, dynamic analysis of functionally graded (FG) graphene-reinforced beams under thermal loading has been carried out based on finite element approach. The presented formulation is based on a higher order refined beam element accounting for shear deformations. The graphene-reinforced beam is exposed to transverse periodic mechanical loading. Graphene platelets have three types of dispersion within the structure including uniform-type, linear-type and nonlinear-type. Convergences and validation studies of derived results from finite element approach are also presented. This research shows that the resonance behavior of a nanocomposite beam can be controlled by the GPL content and dispersions. Therefore, it is showed that the dynamical deflections are notably influenced by GPL weight fractions, types of GPL distributions, temperature changes, elastic foundation and harmonic load excitation frequency.

Analysis of partially embedded beams in two-parameter foundation

  • In this study, Pasternak foundation model, which is a two parameter foundation model, is used to analyze the behavior of laterally loaded beams embedded in semi-infinite media. Total potential energy variation of the system is written to formulate the problem that yielded the required field equations and the boundary conditions. Shear force discontinuities are exposed within the boundary conditions by variational method and are validated by photo elastic experiments. Exact solution of the deflection of the beam is obtained. Both foundation parameters are obtained by self calibration for this particular problem and loading type in this study. It is shown that, like the first parameter k, the second foundation parameter G also depends not only on the material type but also on the geometry and the loading type of the system. On the other hand, surface deflection of the semi infinite media under singular loading is obtained and another method is proposed to determine the foundation parameters using the solution of this problem.

  • In the present work, a new photothermoelastic model based on Moore-Gibson-Thompson theory has been constructed. The governing equationsfor orthotropic photothermoelastic plate are simplified for two-dimension model. Laplace and Fourier transforms are employed after converting the system of equations into dimensionless form. The problem is examined due to various specified sources. Moving normal force, ramp type thermal source and carrier density periodic loading are taken to explore the application of the assumed model. Various field quantities like displacements, stresses, temperature distribution and carrier density distribution are obtained in the transformed domain. The problem is validated by numerical computation for a given material and numerical obtained results are depicted in form of graphs to show the impact of varioustheories of thermoelasticity along with impact of moving velocity, ramp type and periodic loading parameters. Some special cases are also explored. The results obtained in this paper can be used to design various semiconductor elements during the coupled thermal, plasma and elastic wave and otherfieldsin thematerialscience, physical engineering.

Installation Damage Assessment of Geogrids by Laboratory Tester (실내 시험기에 의한 지오그리드의 시공 시 손상 평가)

  • Installation damage of 3 types of geogrids was evaluated with compaction condition by laboratory tester. This experimental was in accordance with ENV ISO 10722-1. First, soil distribution and water content were conducted. And then we changed cyclic loading time and type of geogrids as a factor of installation damage. The samples are woven, warp-knitted, welded type of 6, 8, 10T. This study aims to give an insight into the relationships between installation damage and cyclic loading time. The result of studies was that strength of the damaged geogrids can be closely correlated with the time of loading cycles. Especially, welded type shows slower slope than two types of geogrids due to coating materials. That means welded type is coated with PP (Polypropylene), but the other two types of geogrids are coated with PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride). To confirm another factor different method was performed. The size of soil was used between 9.5 mm and 23.5 m to compare initial experimental. Cyclic loading compaction is taken 200 times before installation test and the reason is that the reduction factor of this case by installation damage was higher than other compaction loading conditions.

A Study on the Characteristics of Coupling Loss factor Associated with Fluid Loading (접수 구조물의 연성손실계수 변화에 관한 연구)

  • Statistical Energy Analysis(SEA) is an efficient tool to predict the broadband noise and vibration for the huge and complex structures such as aircraft and ships. To estimate the noise and vibration by using SEA accurately, the characteristics of SEA parameters associated with fluid loading have to be investigated. In this report, the fluid loaded coupling loss factors were calculated for an 'L' and 'T' type line connections and compared to the ones without fluid loading. Then, the vibration levels for steel box model with 'L' and 'T' type line connection were computed using the fluid loaded and no fluid loaded coupling loss factors, respectively. As a result, the calculated vibration levels of the model using the fluid loaded coupling loss factors were lower than those without fluid loading. As a conclusion, it is necessary to use the fluid loaded coupling loss factors for increasing the prediction accuracy on the noise and vibration of immersed structures.

  • The structural strength tests are usually performed to evaluate the structural strength and to verify the structural design and analysis of the vehicle structures. In this paper, the development of a compressed loading type apparatus to load distributed force over the surface of vehicle structure subjected to external loads was described. This apparatus is for structural materials which are easily to fail because of concentrated stresses. This apparatus can apply loads to specimens without any damage on the test specimen's surfaces by using flexible membrane and can be applicable to several kinds of surface profile of structures. The structural strength tests for the flat structure and curved structure with this apparatus were successfully performed, and the test results showed that this type of loading apparatus can be adequate to verify the structural integrity of the fragile structures.

  • A BC-B type bulk carrier is rarely built, so the structural characteristics is not reported and familiar so far. The biggest difference between BC-B and BC-A type vessel is applying alternate cargo loading, which density is over $1.0ton/m^3$. In this paper, 150K DWT class BC-B type bulk carrier is calculated and compared with BC-A type vessel, which has same condition such as main dimension and deadweight, about prescriptive rule and FEA based on CSR. And aspect ratio of target vessel is smaller than typical capsize bulk carrier, so 150K and 180K bulk carrier, which applied BC-A type, are also compared to find feature of wide beam vessel.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the H & Channel type lining board's capacity by using the fatigue test. The accumulated test result will be used to analyze the relation between the cause of crack occurrence and the behavior of structure. H type lining boards was comfortable behaved in over one million recycled. loading test. In case of channel type lining board specimens occurred the fatigue fracture in about one hundred thousand recycled loading test, and then could not secured endurance life that used servicing load.

  • The cycle performance of Ti-Si alloy anode material for Li-ion batteries has been investigated as a function of loading level of electrode using a nodule type of substrate, in which the current collector of flat foil is also used for comparison. The Ti-Si alloy powders are prepared by mechanical alloying method. The electrodes with the nodule type of current collector exhibit enhanced cycling performance compared to those using the flat foil because the alloy particles are more strongly adhered to substrate and the stress caused by lithiation and delithiation reaction can be effectively relaxed by nodule-type morphology. It appears, however, that the cycle performance is critically dependent on the loading level of electrode, even when the nodule type of current collector is applied. With high loading level, cracks are initiated at surface of electrode due to a steep stress gradient through the electrode thickness during cycling, leading to capacity fading.

  • An electronic paper display was fabricated by injecting electronic ink, including white and black particles coated by positive and negative charge control agents (CCA), respectively, into closed cells surrounded by micro-barriers. These two types of charged, colored particles are easily damaged or their charging value can be changed by the injection process; therefore, the electrical and optical properties of the image panel fabricated by the injection method were estimated in this study. The active particle-loading method, proposed as a new electronic ink injection process, was applied, and the electro-optical properties of the resulting three-electrode-type e-paper image panel were analyzed. The reflection rate of the white image-panel fabricated with our new injection method was 24.7%, while that of the same panel fabricated with a previously reported injection method was 19.8%. In addition, the response time was improved by about five times compared to those reported in other publications.
