  • Intracanal disinfection of infected root canal is one of important treatment procedure. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate whether the surface polymers of controlled release drug (CRD) can effectively control the release rate of chlorhexidine for root canal disinfection. Four CRD prototypes were prepared: Group A (n=12); The core device (absorbent paper point) was loaded with 40% CHX solution as control. Group B (n=12); same as group A, but the device was coated with chitosan. Group C (n=12); same as group A and then coated three times with 5% PMMA. Group D (n=12); same as group A and then coated three times with 3% PLGA. All CRD prototypes were soaked in 3 mL distilled water for experimental periods and the concentrations of released CHX from each CRD prototype were determined using a UV spectrophotometer. Results showed that release rate of CHX were the greatest in the non-coated group (control group), followed by the chitosan-coated group, the PLGA-coated group, and the PMMA-coated group (P < 0.05). This data indicate that surface polymers can control the release rate of CHX from the CRD prototypes.

  • The crude polysaccharide fraction from fruit body of Auricularia auricula were obtained by using hot water extraction and ethanol precipitation. As the crude polysaccharide fraction contained the brownish dark colored compounds, the adsorption study of pigments from the crude polysaccharide using activated carbon was carried out. The pigment compounds showed an absorption characteristic with $\lambda_{max}$ of 230 nm and the absorbance at 230 nm was taken as color intensity. Adsorption capacity of pigment depended on increase of the activated carbon to sample loading ratio. The adsorption capacity increased with increase of pH and temperature in the pH range of 3.0-7.0 and temperature range of 25-40$^{\circ}C$, but decreased in the temperature range of 40-70$^{\circ}C$. The optimum capacity was obtained at addition of 16.7 mg activated carbon per mL sample solution (concentration = 3 mg/mL) at pH of 7.0 and temperature of 40$^{\circ}C$. Treatment for 10 min was sufficient to achieve the 80% decolorization and 1.25 fold purification of polysaccharide. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo second-order kinetic model provided the best fitting for adsorption of the brownish dark colored compounds onto powdered active carbon. The activation energies of adsorption from the Langmuir isotherm parameter in the ranges of 25-40$^{\circ}C$ and 40-70$^{\circ}C$ was -2.54 and 4.38 kcal/g, respectively. The results of low activation energy also indicated that the adsorption process was a physical adsorption which was controlled by diffnsion.

  • Topex/Poseidon satellite, launched in Auguest 1992, has provided more 5 years of very good quality data. Efficient improvements, either about instrumental accuracy or about sea level data correction, have been made so that Topex/Poseidon has become presently a wonderful tool for many researchers. The first mission data of 73 cycles, September 1992 - August 1994, was used to our study in order to know characteristics of environmental correction factors in the Amsterdam-Crozet-Kerguelen region of the South Indian Ocean. According to standard procedures as defined under user handbook for sea surface height data processes, then we have chosen cycles 43 as the cycle of reference because this cycle has provided the completed data for measurement points and has presented the exacted position of ground track compared to another cycles. It was computed variations of various factors for correction in ascending ground track 103(Amsterdam-Kerguelen continental plateau) and descending ground track170 (Crozet basin). Here the variations of ionosphere, dry troposphere, humid troposphere, electromagnetic bias, elastic tide and loading tide were generally very smaller as a few of cm, but the variations of oceanic tide(30-35cm) and inverted barometer(15-30cm) were higher than another factors. For the correction of ocean tide, our model(CEFMO: Code d' Elements Finis pour la Maree Oceanique) - This is hydrodynamic model that is very well applicated in all oceanic situations - was used because this model has especially good solution in the coastal and island area as the open sea area. Conclusionally, it should be understood that the variation of ocean free surface is mainly under the influence of tides(>80-90%) in the Amsterdam - Crozet- Kerguelen region of the South Indian Ocean.

  • Openings in steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) are usually used for decorative designs, crossing locations of multiple utilities and/or structural objectives. However, earlier studies showed that generating an opening in an SPSW has a negative effect on the cyclic performance of the SPSW. Therefore, this study proposes tripling or doubling the steel-sheet-plate (SSP) layer and stiffening the opening of the SPSW to provide a solution to undesirable opening effects, improve the SPSW performance and provide the infill option of potential strengthening measures after the construction stage. The study aims to investigate the impact of SSP doubling with a stiffened opening on the cyclic behaviour, expand the essential data required by structural designers and quantify the SPSW performance factors. Validated numerical models were adopted to identify the influence of the chosen parameters on the cyclic capacity, energy dissipation, ductility, seismic performance factors (SPF) and stiffness of the suggested method. A finite Element (FE) analysis was performed via Abaqus/CAE software on half-scale single-story models of SPSWs exposed to cyclic loading. The key parameters included the number of SSP layers, the opening size ratios corresponding to the net width of the SSP, and the opening shape. The findings showed that the proposed assembly method found a negligible influence in the shear capacity with opening sizes of 10, 15, 20%. However, a deterioration in the wall strength was observed for openings with sizes of 25% and 30%. The circular opening is preferable compared with the square opening. Moreover, for all the models, the average value of the obtained ductility did not show substantial changes and the ultimate shear resistance was achieved after reaching a drift ratio of 4.36%. Additionally, the equivalent sectional area of the SSP in the twin and triple configuration of the SPSWs demonstrated approximately similar results. Compared with the single SSP layer, the proposed configuration of the twin SSP layer with a stiffened opening suggest to more sufficiency create SSP openings in the SPSW compared to that of other configurations. Finally, a tabular SPF quantification is exhibited for SPSWs with openings.

  • Korean ports have some problems in the aspect of quality & quantity in the bunkering process. Quality of bunker is assessed as more higher than competing ports. However, quality of bunkering procedure is assessed as lower. Especially, supply chain from loading of bunker to the bunker barge at oil terminal, transport it, and supply it to the ship has not been secured. Furthermore, aspect of quantity of bunker is more serious rather than that of quality of bunkering process. Disputes on the quantity of bunker between seller and buyer occur frequently, and residue & theft of bunker is also popularized issue and serious problem. Low bunkering fee is recognized as major reason of that problem, however, though low fee can be solved, it can not be necessary secured that problem could be solved, Therefore, this paper investigates and suggests the scheme to solve the quality problems of bunker supplying procedure, and develop solution toward advanced bunkering ports through removal of the quantity disputes. Concretely, this paper suggests introduction of quality system of bunker supply chain in the aspect of bunker supply procedure, and diversion from conventional sounding method to innovative Mass Flow Metering System in the aspect of bunker measuring. These two innovative solutions contribute to the removal and improvement of current structural problems in bunkering procedure.

  • The collision between a ship and bridge across a waterway may result in extremely serious consequences that may endanger the safety of life and property. Therefore, factors affecting ship bridge collision must be investigated, and the impact force should be discussed based on various collision conditions. In this study, a finite element model of ship bridge collision is established, and the peak impact force of a ship bridge collision based on 50 operating conditions combined with three input parameters, i.e., ship loading condition, ship speed, and ship bridge collision angle, is calculated via numerical simulation. Using neural network models trained with the numerical simulation results, the prediction model of the peak impact force of ship bridge collision involving an extremely short calculation time on the order of milliseconds is established. The neural network models used in this study are the basic backpropagation neural network model and Elman neural network model, which can manage temporal information. The accuracy of the neural network models is verified using 10 test samples based on the operating conditions. Results of a verification test show that the Elman neural network model performs better than the backpropagation neural network model, with a mean relative error of 4.566% and relative errors of less than 5% in 8 among 10 test cases. The trained neural network can yield a reliable ship bridge collision force instantaneously only when the required parameters are specified and a nonlinear finite element solution process is not required. The proposed model can be used to predict whether a catastrophic collision will occur during ship navigation, and thus hence the safety of crew operating the ship.

  • Wastewater treatment using membrane bioreactors has been extensively used to alleviate water shortage and pollution by improving the quality of the treated water discharged into the environment. However, membrane biofouling persistently holds back an MBR process by reducing the process efficiency. Herein, we synthesized carbon nanospheres (CNSs) with many hydrophilic oxygen groups and utilized them as an additive to prepare high-performance ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with hydrophilicity and porous pore structure. CNSs were found to form crescent-shaped pores on the membrane surface, increasing the mean surface pore size by about 40% without causing significant defects larger than bubble points, as the CNS content increased by 4.6 wt%. In addition, the porous pore structure of CNS composite membranes was also attributable to the CNS's isotropic morphologies and relatively low particle number density because the aforementioned properties contributed to preventing the polymer solution viscosity from soaring with the loading of CNS. However, too porous structure compromised the mechanical properties, such that CNS2.3 was the best from a comprehensive consideration including the pore structure and mechanical properties. As a result, CNS2.3 showed not only 2 times higher water permeability than CNS0 but also 5 times longer operation duration until membrane cleaning was required.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study was to evaluates shear bond strength between zirconia core and veneer-ceramic in order to examine the clinical practice of colored zirconia block fabricated by infiltration method into the metal chloride solution. Material and methods: CNU block and $Everest{(R)}$ ZS blank were used. VITA In-$Ceram{(R)}$2000 YZ Coloring liquid (LL1) and 3 aqueous metal chloride solutions containing chromium and molybdenum ingredients were used. 40 zirconia specimens were prepared into cuboid shape ($5{\times}5{\times}10 mm$). All specimens were divided into 5 groups by infiltrating into the coloring liquids. After that, porcelain was build up into the shape of $5{\times}5{\times}4mm^3$, followed by sintering. The maximum loading and shear bond strength was measured. Failure patterns and failure sites were examined. Results: 1. There were no statistical differences in shear bond strength between zirconia blocks (P > .05). 2. There were no statistically significant differences in shear bond strength between non-colored and colored zirconia blocks, while shear bond strength of non-colored zirconia blocks is higher than that of colored specimen (P > .05). 3. In the comparison with shear bond strength among colored zirconia blocks, there were no statistical differences according to kinds of coloring liquid (P > .05). 4. Mixed failure patterns were mainly observed in the failure between zirconia and veneering ceramic. The veneering ceramic failure of all specimens was observed in either interface of zirconia or veneering ceramic. Conclusion: Shear bond strength between colored zirconia and veneering ceramic shows lower tendency than non-colored zirconia, but there was clinically allowable value.

  • This study aims to determine the optimal maturity of strawberry fruits as affected by the application of lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LPE) and its optimal concentration for postharvest stability and quality. Prior to application of treatments, fruits that were classified into levels of maturity (0%, 50%, 70% and 100%) were air-dried for 40 minutes and stored in the refrigerator at $4^{\circ}C$ for 12 days. Fruits at 70% maturity were dipped into 0, 10, 50 and $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ LPE solutions for 1 minute. A lower range of concentration (0, 2.5, 5, 10 and $25mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) was applied to fruits at different maturity levels. Data on fresh weight, hardness at vertical and horizontal loading positions, color index and sugar content during storage were collected. Based on fruits with 70% maturity dipped in LPE concentrations, there were no significant differences found on fresh weight, color index and sugar content. However, the application of $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ LPE gave the highest hardness at vertical loading position while $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ had the lowest average. At lower range of LPE concentrations, fresh weight was not significantly affected by LPE application and maturity levels. Hardness of fruits was mainly based on the maturity of the fruits. Increased hardness was observed in the fruits with 70% maturity dipped into the $5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of LPE solution. The hardness and Hunter's $L^*$ and $b^*$ value of 100% matured fruits gave lowest values despite the application of $25mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ LPE 12 days after storage.

  • The aims of this study are 1) to test oocytes and embryos collected from in-vitro to achieving the valuable protocol by culturing, vitrifying and thawing of oocytes/embryos, and 2) to transfer them to recipient, and finally have resulted in pregnancies from recipient females after surgical or nonsurgical transfer. In vitro maturation and fertilization were performed according to Funahashi et al (1994). Glucose-free NCSU 23 supplemented with 5 mM sodium pyruvate, 0.5 mM sodium lactate and 4 mg/ml bovine serum albumin for 2 days at $39^{\circ}C$, and 10% fetal bovine serum albumin was added to the culture medium thereafter. Embryos were treated with 7.5 ${\mu}g/ml$ cytochalasin-B for 30 min, centrifuged at 13,000 rpm for 13 min and then exposed sequentially to an ethylene glycol(EG) vitrification solution, aspirated into OPS, and plunged/thawed into/from liquid nitrogen. In vivo embryos were surgically collected from three dornors after AI for control group. Forty-nine embryos were washed 3 times in mPBS + 10% FBS, followed treatments : cultured, centrifuged, vitrified, recovered and transferred to recipients as in vitro prepared embryos. Three recipients were transferred individually with 100, 100 frozen embryos derived from abattoir and 34 fresh embryos by surgically, and another three recipients were transferred individually with 150, 150 frozen embryos and 100 fresh embryos by nonsurgically, respectively. all recipient sows exhibited delayed returns to estrus. To our knowledge, theses results suggest that required an improved techniques, more vigorous embryos preparation and substitute to gilt with cleaner uterous condition.
