Carbon/epoxy composite(CFRP) coupons previously damaged by low velocity impact were tested under static tensile loading and microscope progress of damage was characterized by ultrasonic C-scan, Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (SAM) and Acoustic Emission(AE) techniques which were based on the application of elastic waves. The degress of impact damage has been correlated with the AE activity during monotonic or loading/unloading tensile testing as well as the result of ultrasonic test. The coupons were subjected to impact velocities ranged from 0.71 to 2.17 m/sec, which introduced the amount of damage rated as 0%, 10%, 30%, and 50% with reference to the total absorbed energy at fracture. Special attention was paid to determine optimal AE parameters to characterize the microscopic fracture process and to predict the residual strength of composite laminates. AE RMS voltage during the early stage of tensile loading was found an effective parameter to quantify the degree of impact damage. It was also found that the Felicity ratio is closely related to the stacking sequence and the residual strength of the CFRP laminates.
The purpose of this paper is to consider the disk failure phenomenon based on the second kind Fredholm integral equation and numerical inversion of Laplace transform when the head hit disk asperities at HDI under antiplane impact loading. The model for analysis is a two layeered half-space with a circumferential surface edge crack. The optimum design parameters to reduce the disk failure due to impact are presented
Impact damage modeling of concrete under high strain rate loading conditions is investigated. A phenomenological penetration model that can account for complicated impact and penetration process such as the rate and loading history response of concrete, the microstructure-penetration interaction etc. is discussed. Constitutive law compatible with Second Law of thermodynamics and coupled damage and plasticity modelling based on continuum damage mechanics are also examined. The purpose of this paper is preliminarily to study with respect to impact and penetration models for concrete before the development of that model.
Reliable and accurate method of computationally aided design processes of advanced thin walled structures in automotive industries are much essential for the efficient usage of smart materials, that possess higher energy absorption in dynamic compression loading. In this paper, most versatile components i.e., thin walled crash tubes with different geometrical profiles are introduced in view of mitigating the impact of varying cross section in crash behavior and energy absorption characteristics. Apart from the geometrical parameters such as length, diameter and thickness, the non-dimensionalized parameters of average forces which control the plastic bending moment for varying thickness has explored in view of quantifying its impact on the crashworthiness of the structure. The explicit finite element code ABAQUS is utilized to conduct the numerical studies to examine the effect of parametric modifications in crash behavior and energy absorption. Also the simulation results are experimentally validated. It is evident that the circular cross-sectional tubes are preferable as high collision impact shock absorbers due to their ability in withstanding axial and oblique impact loads effectively. Furthermore, the specific energy absorption (SEA), crash force efficiency (CFE), plastic bending moment, peak force responses and its impact for optimally tailoring a design to cater the crashworthiness requirements are investigated. The primary outcome of the study is to provide sufficient information on circular tubes for the use of energy absorbers where impact oblique loading is expected.
This paper describes the formulation and application of a dynamic model for a conventional rail track subjected to arbitary loading functions that simulate wheel/rail impact forces. The rail track is idealized as a periodic elastically coupled beam system resting on a Winkler foundation. Modal parameters of the track structure are first obtained from the natural vibration characteristics of the beam system, which is discretized into a periodic assembly of a specially-constructed track element and a single beam element characterized by their exact dynamic stiffness matrices. An equivalent frequency-dependent spring coefficient representing the resilient, flexural and inertial characteristics of the rail support components is introduced to reduce the degrees of freedom of the track element. The forced vibration equations of motion of the track subjected to a series of loading functions are then formulated by using beam bending theories and are reduced to second order ordinary differential equations through the use of mode summation with non-proportional modal damping. Numerical examples for the dynamic responses of a typical track are presented, and the solutions resulting from different rail/tie beam theories are compared.
The express/intercity bus models have been developing for wheelchair users to provide the preferable long-distance travels by the Korean government research. In the previous studies, evaluation method was set up for the wheelchair users' safety and the study for wheelchair occupants' safety was performed under various crash loadings mimic to real accidents, frontal crash, side impact and rollover, etc. This study was focused on the evaluation of occupant behaviors and injuries (head and chest) during vehicle impact loading cases in order to ensure the safety of wheelchair passengers in the bus. The occupant response and belt loading data during the sled FE simulation were compared with those of the sled test. The simulation results showed overall safety tolerances of wheelchair occupants under the severe frontal deceleration, side impact loading based on the FMVSS 214 configuration and bus rollover loading.
An investigation was performed to study the impact damage in CFRP laminated composites subjected to impact loading. A finite element model has been developed for predicting the impact damage in laminated composite plates resulting from the ballistic impact. The finite element model was based on the higher-order shear deformation theory and was used to predict the initial intraply matrix cracking and the shape and size of interface delamination in laminated composites. Numerical simulation was performed and then the initiation of the matrix cracking and the shape and size of impacted induced delamination were predicted, and te results were compared with those of impact experiments with the same dimension and stacking sequences. A linear relationship holds between impact velocity and length and width of delamination. As impact velocity is increased, the increase of delamination length is highger than the increase of delamination width.
The effect of maleinized polybutadiene (MPB) on the mechanical properties of epoxy resins including adhesion strength, elongation and impact peel resistance was investigated in this study, in which MPB is an anhydride-functionalized polybutadiene prepolymer. Different molecular weights (3.1K and 5.6K) of MPB were added to diglycidyl ether bisphenol-A (DEGBA), an epoxy resin, to increase its impact peel strength and elongation. At various loading percent (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 wt%) of MPB in the epoxy resin, significant improvements of mechanical properties were observed. According to the comparative analysis results, the modified epoxy system with 15 wt% (3.1K) MPB exhibited the highest lap shear strength, about 40% higher than that of neat epoxy. The tensile strength and elongation steadily and simultaneously increased as the loading percent of MPB increased. The impact peel strengths at low (-40℃) and room (23℃) temperatures were substantially improved by MPB incorporation into epoxy resins. Reactive and flexible MPB prepolymer seems to construct strong nano-structured networks with rigid epoxy backbones without sacrificing the tensile and adhesion strengths while increasing impact resistance/toughness and elongation properties. For higher impact peel while maintaining adhesion and tensile strengths, approximately 10-15 wt% MPB loading in epoxy resin was suggested. Consequently, incorporation of functionalized MPB prepolymer into epoxy system is an easy and efficient way for improving some crucial mechanical properties of epoxy resins.
In this study, developments of an efficient visco-hyperelastic constitutive equation for describing the time dependent material behavior accurately in dynamic and impact loading and finding related materials constants are considered. Based on proposed constitutive model, behaviour of a hollow cylinder elastomer bushing under different dynamic and impact loading conditions is studied. By implementing the developed visco-hyperelastic constitutive equation to LS-DYNA explicit dynamic finite element software a three dimensional model of the bushing is developed and dynamic behaviour of that in axial and torsional dynamic deformation modes are studied. Dynamic response and induced stress under different impact loadings which is rarely studied in previous researches have been also investigated. Effects of hyperelastic and visco-hyperelastic parameters on deformation and induced stresses as well as strain rate are considered.
The performance evaluation and deflection of 3 spans concrete simplicity slab bridge analyzed by non-destructive and loading test. Compressive strength of slab and pier appeared in the range of each 353∼366 kgf/$cm^2$ and 152∼215 kgf/$cm^2$ in rebound number test. Also, it appeared that concrete quality of slab was good after performance improvement. The average compressive strength of slab by core picking appeared 229 kg/$cm^2$. In reinforcing bar arrangement test of span and member, it appeared that horizontal and vertical reinforcing bar was arranged to fixed interval. The value of calculation deflection that carried structural analysis with deflection analysis wave in static loading test appeared higher than that of experimental deflection and it appeared that hardness of this bridge was good. Maximum impact factor that estimated from deflection by running speed in dynamic loading test appeared by 0.216 in 10 km/hr running speed.
