In recent years, the structural shock response to UNDEX (UNDerwater EXplosion) has been studied as much, or more, through numerical simulations than through testing for several reasons. Very high costs and sensitive environmental concerns have kept destructive underwater explosion testing to a minimum. Increase of simulation capabilities and sophisticated simulation tools has made numerical simulations more efficient analysis methods as well as more reliable testing aids. In this study, the main issue is the fluid-structure interaction. Here, appropriate relations between the acoustic pressure on the fluid surface and displacements on the structure surface are formed internally. The analysis was carried out using ABAQUS/Explicit and the results have been visualized in ABAQUS CAE. The shock loading history, acoustic pressure, stress of stand-off point, the velocity and strain energy time histories were presented.

A systematic procedure to evaluate fatigue damages and to predict remaining fatigue lives is introduced for a steel railway bridge. Fatigue damages are evaluated by using the currently available fatigue damage theory. Fatigue lives with the condition of fatigue crack initiation are estimated by the probabilistic approach based on the reliability theory as well as the simplified procedure. A equivalent deterministic procedure is also suggested to assess the remaining fatigue life under various traffic conditions. Numerical simulations are used to assess dynamic stress histories with correction factors. Loading models are obtained from the passenger volume data. Train coincidences are also considered. Based on the results, the fatigue life is found to be underestimated by without considering the coincidence of trains on the bridge. The simplified method proposed in this study are found to yield approximately the same results as the systematic procedure.
Piles passing through sloping liquefiable deposits are prone to lateral loading if these deposits liquefy and flow during earthquakes. These lateral loads caused by the relative soil-pile movement will induce bending in the piles and may result in failure of the piles or excessive pile-head displacement. Whilst the weak nature of the flowing liquefied soil would suggest that only small loads would be exerted on the piles, it is known from case histories that piles do fail owing to the influence of laterally spreading soils. It will be shown, based on dynamic centrifuge test data, that dilatant behaviour of soil close to the pile is the major cause of these considerable transient lateral loads which are transferred to the pile. This paper reports the results of geotechnical centrifuge tests in which models of gently sloping liquefiable sand with pile foundations passing through them were subjected to earthquake excitation. The soil close to the pile was instrumented with pore-pressure transducers and contact stress cells in order to monitor the interaction between soil and pile and to track the soil stress state both upslope and downslope of the pile. The presence of instrumentation measuring pore-pressure and lateral stress close to the pile in the research described in this paper gives the opportunity to better study the soil stress state close to the pile and to compare the loads measured as being applied to the piles by the laterally spreading soils with those suggested by the JRA design code. This test data shows that lateral stresses much greater than one might expect from calculations based on the residual strength of liquefied soil may be applied to piles in flowing liquefied slopes owing to the dilative behaviour of the liquefied soil. It is shown at least for the particular geometry studied that the current JRA design code can be un-conservative by a factor of three for these dilation-affected transient lateral loads.

Presented is a nonlinear constitutive model for progressive tensile fracturing of concrete. The model is incremental, path-dependent, and tensorialy invariant. The total strain tensor is assumed to be a sum of a purely elastic component and an inelastic component. The material is considered to contain weak planes of all directions which characterize the planes of the microcracks. A one-to-one functional dependence is assumed between the normal stress and the normal strain across each of the weak planes. The tangential stiffness of concrete is then derived form the principle of virtual work. The present theory can be applied to loading histories which are nonproportional or during which the principal directions rotate. Good agreement with the available direct tensile test data which cover strain-softening is demonstrated.
In the present paper a transient three-dimensional thermo-mechanical model for concrete is presented. For given boundary conditions, temperature distribution is calculated by employing a three-dimensional transient thermal finite element analysis. Thermal properties of concrete are assumed to be constant and independent of the stress-strain distribution. In the thermo-mechanical model for concrete the total strain tensor is decomposed into pure mechanical strain, free thermal strain and load induced thermal strain. The mechanical strain is calculated by using temperature dependent microplane model for concrete (O$\check{z}$bolt, et al. 2001). The dependency of the macroscopic concrete properties (Young's modulus, tensile and compressive strengths and fracture energy) on temperature is based on the available experimental database. The stress independent free thermal strain is calculated according to the proposal of Nielsen, et al. (2001). The load induced thermal strain is obtained by employing the biparabolic model, which was recently proposed by Nielsen, et al. (2004). It is assumed that the total load induced thermal strain is irrecoverable, i.e., creep component is neglected. The model is implemented into a three-dimensional FE code. The performance of headed stud anchors exposed to fire was studied. Three-dimensional transient thermal FE analysis was carried out for three embedment depths and for four thermal loading histories. The results of the analysis show that the resistance of anchors can be significantly reduced if they are exposed to fire. The largest reduction of the load capacity was obtained for anchors with relatively small embedment depths. The numerical results agree well with the available experimental evidence.
Good temperature control in the chill chain is imperative for maintaining safety and quality of the fresh meat. Therefore, the actual state of temperature or relative humidity histories of fresh meat product from carcass chill room to retail shop and the temperatures of chill and freezing rooms at local butcher shops were monitored by means of data loggers. The relative humidity and air temperature in carcass chill room were between 86 and 98%, and -3 and 0$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The surface temperatures of boxed beef measured in winter, when the outside air temperature was measured between -2 and -5$^{\circ}C$, were recorded between 1 and 3$^{\circ}C$, although transport vehicle switched off the chilling unit during transportation, However, the inside temperatures of chill transport vehicle measured in summer, when the transport time was prolonged to maximum 8 hrs, were raised to 10 to 15$^{\circ}C$, in worst case up to 25$^{\circ}C$. In that case, however, the inside temperature of boxed beef was maintained generally lower than 5$^{circ}C$ as the loading and unloading were finished within 30 min. The storage temperatures for meat in the subfreezing room, at which the butcher shops in local market are used to set to facilitate the thin slicing of meat, were measured between -2 and -8$^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, the temperatures of storage room for vacuum packaged meat in the chilled meat retail shops were maintained generally between 0 and +2$^{\circ}C$.

While the structural safety assessment of Cargo Containment System(CCS) in membrane type LNG carriers has to be carried out in consideration of sloshing impact pressure, it is very difficult to figure out its dynamic response behaviors due to its very complex structural arrangements/materials and complicated phenomena of sloshing impact loading. For the development of its original technique, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of dynamic response behavior of CCS structure under sloshing impact pressure. In this study, for the exact understanding of dynamic response behavior of CCS structure in membrane Mark III type LNG carriers under sloshing impact pressure, its wet drop impact response analyses were carried out by using Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) analysis technique of LS-DYNA code, and were also validated through a series of wet drop experiments for the enhancement of more accurate shock response analysis technique. It might be thought that the structural response behaviors of impact response analysis, such as impact pressure impulses and resulted strain time histories, generally showed very good agreement with experimental ones with very appropriate use of FSI analysis technique of LS-DYNA code, finite element modeling and material properties of CCS structure, finite element modeling and equation of state(EOS) of fluid domain.

Traditionally, multi-story buildings are designed to provide stiffer structural support to withstand lateral earthquake loading. Introducing flexible elements at the base of a structure and providing sufficient damping is an alternative way to mitigate seismic hazards. These features can be achieved with a device known as an isolator. This paper covers the design of base isolators for multi-story buildings in medium-risk seismicity regions and evaluates the structural responses of such isolators. The well-known tower building for police personnel built in Dhaka, Bangladesh by the Public Works Department (PWD) has been used as a case study to justify the viability of incorporating base isolators. The objective of this research was to establish a simplified model of the building that can be effectively used for dynamic analysis, to evaluate the structural status, and to suggest an alternative option to handle the lateral seismic load. A finite element model was incorporated to understand the structural responses. Rubber-steel bearing (RSB) isolators such as Lead rubber bearing (LRB) and high damping rubber bearing (HDRB) were used in the model to insert an isolator link element in the structural base. The nonlinearities of rubber-steel bearings were considered in detail. Linear static, linear dynamic, and nonlinear dynamic analyses were performed for both fixed-based (FB) and base isolated (BI) buildings considering the earthquake accelerograms, histories, and response spectra of the geological sites. Both the time-domain and frequency-domain approaches were used for dynamic solutions. The results indicated that for existing multi-story buildings, RSB diminishes the muscular amount of structural response compared to conventional non-isolated structures. The device also allows for higher horizontal displacement and greater structural flexibility. The suggested isolation technique is able to mitigate the structural hazard under even strong earthquake vulnerability.

This paper presents a hysteretic damage model for reinforced concrete (RC) joints that explicitly accounts for the bond-slip between the reinforcing bars and the surrounding concrete. A frame element whose displacement fields for the concrete and the reinforcing bars are different to permit slip is developed. From the fiber section concept, compatibility equations for concrete, rebar, and bond are defined. Modification of the hysteretic stress-strain curve of steel is conducted for partial unloading and reloading conditions. Local bond stress-slip relations for monotonic loads are updated at each slip reversal according to the damage factor. The numerical applications of the reinforcing bar embedded in the confined concrete block, the RC column anchored in the foundation, and the RC beam-column subassemblage validate the model accuracy and show how including the effects of bond-slip leads to a good assessment of the amount of energy dissipation during loading histories.
Failure modes result in fracture or tearing, which may cause deterioration of resistance and reduction of inelastic deformation capacity. The potential failure modes for Special Concentrically Braced Frames (SCBFs) include fracture or tearing of the brace, net section fracture of the brace or gusset plate, fracture of the gusset plate welds, shear fracture of the bolts, block shear, excessive bolt bearing deformation, and buckling of the gusset plate. HSS tubular braces are commonly used in SCBFs, and net section fracture of the tubular brace may also occur through the brace net section at the end of the slot cut into the tube to slip over the gusset plate. This failure mode is categorized as a tension failure mode, and may cause dramatic loss of resistance and brittle behavior. Net section reinforcement is required according to AISC design specifications (AISC 2001). In this paper, the need to reinforce the net section area was discussed. Initially, the results of the net section fracture tests done by the University of California in Berkeley were presented with the modeling of these tests using FE models. To investigate the possibility of net section fracture in an actual frame, the slot end hole model was adapted to the frame FE model, and alternate near-fault histories were applied with tension-dominated cycles, since previous analyses showed that loading history was the most critical factor in net section fracture. The need for this reinforcement (cover plate) and the tension-dominated near-fault history were investigated.
