This paper focuses on a newly designed ice load formula based on the ARAON's 2016 Arctic field data in order to improve a structural design against ice loads. The strain gage signals from ARAON's hull plating were converted to the local ice pressure upon the hull plating using the influence coefficient matrix and finite element analysis. First, a traditional pressure-area relationship is derived by applying probabilistic approaches to handle the strains measured onboard the ARAON. Then, the local ice load prediction formula is re-analyzed after reviewing the ARAON's additional field data to consider information about the ship speed and thickness of the sea ice. It is shown that the newly developed pressure-area relationship well reflects the influence of other design parameters such as the ship speed and ice thickness in the prediction of local ice loads on Arctic vessels.

This article develops a nonclassical size dependent nanoplate model to study the dynamic response of functionally graded carbon nanotube (FGCNT) nanoplates under a moving load. Both nonlocal and microstructure effects are incorporated through the nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory. To investigate the effect of reinforcement orientation of CNT, four different configurations are studied and analysed. The FGM gradation thorough the thickness direction is simulated using the power law. In the context of the first order shear deformation theory, the dynamic equations of motion and the associated boundary conditions are derived by Hamilton's principle. An analytical solution of the dynamic equations of motion is derived based on the Navier methodology. The proposed model is verified and compared with the available results in the literature and good agreement is found. The numerical results show that the dynamic performance of FGCNT nanoplates could be governed by the reinforcement pattern and volume fraction in addition to the non-classical parameters and the moving load dimensionless parameter. Obtained results are reassuring in design and analysis of nanoplates reinforced with CNTs.
In case eccentric load is applied at compact tension specimen, the propagation behavior due to existence or nonexistence of hole, numbers and positions of holes near crack is investigated in this study. Strain energy, displacement and stress happened in specimen are examined through simulation analysis. And stress intensity factor is obtained by the basis of strain energy and deformation. When defect or hole exists in structure, the possibility of fracture can be thought to be verified by using the study result.
The published studies usually used analytical method, numerical methods or experimental method to determine the stress-strain state and displacement of the single-layer or multi-layer curved shell types, but with a small scale model. However, a full scale multi-layer doubly curved concrete shell roof model should be researched. This paper presents the results of the experiment and simulation analysis involving stress-strain state, sliding between layers, the formation and development of the full scale double-layer doubly curved concrete shell roof when this shell begins to crack. The results of the this study have constructed the load-sliding strain relationship; strain diagram; stress diagram in the shell layers; the Nx, Ny membrane force diagram and deflection of shell. Thisresults by experimental method on a full scale model of concrete have clarified the working of multi-layer doubly curved concrete shell roof. The experimental and simulation results are compared with each other and compared with the Sap2000 software.

In this study, Numerical simulations of the pintle-nozzle were performed to evaluate the thermal strain effect using by 1-way fluid structure interaction analysis(FSI). we carried out computational fluid dynamics analysis to obtain the pressure and temperature fields of pintle nozzle. we then used the data as the load condition for a FSI separately. and thermal strain of the pintle was checked. In order to confirm the change of thrust characteristic by deformation, we are carrying out 2-way FSI.

The icebreaking research vessel, ARAON had her second ice trial in the Arctic Sea from 16th July to 12th August 2010. During the voyage, the local ice loads acting on the bow of port side were measured from 14 strain gauges. The measurements were also carried out in ice waters with various ice concentration ratio as well as the icebreaking performance tests. In this study, the ice loads measured during the 'general' operation in ice waters were analyzed. As a first step, the relationship between the location of strain gauges and the ice loads were investigated, and then the possibility for observation of higher ice loads was estimated based on the probability density function. The relationship between the ship speed and the ice load was also investigated. 718 peak stresses data higher than 20 MPa obtained from strain gauges array attached in longitudinally and vertically was analyzed. In general, the ice load increases as the ship speed increases in the low ship speed range, and ice load decreases as the ship speed is greater than a certain speed.
Monopile foundations of offshore wind turbines embedded in soft clay are subjected to the long-term cyclic lateral loads induced by winds, currents, and waves, the vibration of monopile leads to the accumulation of pore pressure and cyclic strains in the soil in its vicinity, which poses a threat to the safety operation of monopile. The researchers mainly focused on the hysteretic stress-strain relationship of soft clay and kinds of stiffness degradation models have been adopted, which may consume considerable computing resources and is not applicable for the long-term bearing performance analysis of monopile. In this study, a modified cyclic stiffness degradation model considering the effect of plastic strain and pore pressure change has been proposed and validated by comparing with the triaxial test results. Subsequently, the effects of cyclic load ratio, pile aspect ratio, number of load cycles, and length to embedded depth ratio on the accumulated rotation angle and pore pressure are presented. The results indicate the number of load cycles can significantly affect the accumulated rotation angle of monopile, whereas the accumulated pore pressure distribution along the pile merely changes with pile diameter, embedded length, and the number of load cycles, the stiffness of monopile can be significantly weakened by decreasing the embedded depth ratio L/H of monopile. The stiffness degradation of soil is more significant in the passive earth pressure zone, in which soil liquefaction is likely to occur. Furthermore, the suitability of the "accumulated rotation angle" and "accumulated pore pressure" design criteria for determining the required cyclic load ratio are discussed.

This paper describes a reinforced concrete crack model, which utilizes a strain decomposition technique. The strain decomposition technique enables the explicit inclusion of physical behavior across the cracked concrete surface such as aggregate interlock and dowel action rather than intuitively defining the shear retention factor. The proposed concrete crack model is integrated into the commercial finite element software ABAQUS shell elements through a user-supplied material subroutine. The FE results have been compared to experimental results reported by other researchers. The proposed bridge FE model is capable of predicting the initial cracking load level, the ultimate load capacity, and the crack pattern with good accuracy.

The objectives of this study are to estimate the strengthening effect of concrete column strengthened with CFS and to provide basic guideline for the strengthening design with laminated composite materials. Analysis stress-strain model of laminated CFS is presented based on laminate theory. This model has been implemented in the algorithm of evaluating confinement effect of CFS. From results of the algorithm, stress-strain relationship of confined concrete is obtained. Using this stress-strain relationship, section analyses of circular and rectangular concrete columns strengthened with CFS are carried our, and load-moment interaction and load-ductility curves of the columns are obtained. To evaluate the strengthening effects of CFS, parametric study is also conducted for the angle of ply, thickness of CFS, shape of section, and reinforcement ratio. Based on this investigation, design recommendations and basic guidelines for the strengthening design with CFS are proposed.

In author's previous paper, a finite element algorithm was presented to calculate the buckling and crippling stresses of composite laminated stringers. In this study, for the validation of the finite element analysis, Z-section composite stringers of different lengths and flange-widths were tested in axial compression. The stacking sequence of graphite/epoxy is [$\pm$45/0/90]s. Strain gages were attached to each specimen to get the strain response. Deflection and end-shortening were obtained by a displacement transducer. The buckling and crippling loads are determined from the strain response, load vs. end-shortening curves, and load vs. out-of-plane deflection curves. Comparison between finite element and experimental results shows good agreement in the buckling, local buckling, and crippling stresses.
