  • Helical-coil steam generator (HCSG) technology is a major design candidate for small modular reactors due to its compactness and capability to produce superheated steam with high generation efficiency. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of the passively autonomous power maneuvering by coupling the 3-D transient multi-physics of a soluble-boron-free (SBF) core with a time-dependent HCSG model. The predictor corrector quasi-static method was used to reduce the cost of the transient 3-D neutronic solution. In the numerical system simulations, the feedwater flow rate to the secondary of the HCSGs is adjusted to extract the demanded power from the primary loop. This varies the coolant temperature at the inlet of the SBF core, which governs the passively autonomous power maneuvering due to the strongly negative coolant reactivity feedback. Here, we simulate a 100-50-100 load-follow operation with a 5%/minute power ramping speed to investigate the feasibility of the passively autonomous load-follow in a 450 MWth SBF PWR. In addition, the passively autonomous frequency control operation is investigated. The various system models are coupled, and they are solved by an in-house Fortran-95 code. The results of this work demonstrate constant steam temperature in the secondary side and limited variation of the primary coolant temperature. Meanwhile, the variations of the core axial shape index and the core power peaking are sufficiently small.

  • This paper deals with the performance analysis of static compensator (STATCOM) based voltage regulator for selfexcited induction generators (SEIGs) supplying balanced/unbalanced and linear/ non-linear loads. In practice, most of the loads are linear. But the presence of non-linear loads in some applications injects harmonics into the generating system. Because an SEIG is a weak isolated system, these harmonics have a great effect on its performance. Additionally, SEIG's offer poor voltage regulation and require an adjustable reactive power source to maintain a constant terminal voltage under a varying load. A three-phase insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based current controlled voltage source inverter (CC- VSI) known as STATCOM is used for harmonic elimination. It also provides the required reactive power an SEIG needs to maintain a constant terminal voltage under varying loads. A dynamic model of an SEIG-STATCOM system with the ability to simulate varying loads has been developed using a stationary d-q axes reference frame. This enables us to predict the behavior of the system under transient conditions. The simulated results show that by using a STATCOM based voltage regulator the SEIG terminal voltage can be maintained constant and free from harmonics under linear/non linear and balanced/unbalanced loads.

  • In-cylinde flow and mixture formation are key contributors to both idle stability and combustion stability at part load condition in SI engine. The real time measurements of air-fuel ration and in- cylinder residual gas fraction are particularly important to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms for combustion and emissions especially during cold start and throttle transient condition. This paper reports the cycle resolved measurements of residual gas fraction and equivalence ration near speak plug with value timing change and their effects on combustion characteristics at part load. The results showed that the effect of intake value opening on the residual gas fraction was smaller than that of exhaust valve closing because of the decreases of exhaust gas reverse flow from exhaust port. The variation of equivalence ratio near spark plug increased with the increase of value overlap and it closely related with heat release rate and combustion stability

  • This paper presents the two lossless auxiliary inducors-assisted voltage source type half bridge(single ended push pull:SEPP) series resonant high frequency inverter for induction heated fixing roller in copy and printing machines. The simple high-frequency inverter treated here can completely achieve stable zero current soft switching (ZCS) commutation forwide its output power regulation ranges and load variations under constant high frequency pulse density modulation (PDM) scheme. Its transient and steady state operatprinciple is originally described and discussed for a constant high-frequency PDM control strategy under a stable ZCS operation commutation, together with its output effective power regulation charactertics-based on the high frequency PDM strategy. The experimenoperating performances of this voltage source SEPP ZCS-PDM series resonant high frequency inverter using IGBTs are illustrated as compared with computer simulation results and experimenones. Its power losses analysis and actual efficiency are evaluated and discussed on the basis of simulation and experimental results. The feasible effectiveness of this high frequency inverter appliimplemented here is proved from the practical point of view.

  • In this paper, excitation systems using a linear mass shaker (LMS) and an active tuned mass damper (ATMD) are presented to simulate the wind induced responses of a building structure. The actuator force for the excitation systems is calculated by using the inverse transfer function of a target structural response to the actuator. Filter and envelop functions are used to prevent the actuator from exciting unexpected modal responses and an initial transient response and thus, to minimize the error between the wind and actuator induced responses. The analyses results from a 76-story benchmark building problem for which the wind load obtained by a wind tunnel test is given, indicate that the excitation system installed at a specific floor can approximately reproduce the structural responses induced by the wind load applied to each floor of the structure. The excitation system designed by the proposed method can be effectively used for evaluating the wind response characteristics of a practical building structure and for obtaining an accurate analytical model of the building under wind load.

  • An experimental study has been peformed to develop a scheme for fault detection and diagnosis(FDD) in a vapor compression refrigeration system. This study is to analyze fault effect on the system performance and to find efficient diagnosis rules for easy determination of abnormal system operation. The refrigeration system was operated with a variable speed compressor to modulate cooling capacity. The FDD system was designed to consider transient load conditions. Four major faults were considered, and each fault was detected over wide operating load range by separating the system response to the load change. Rule-based method was used to diagnose and classify the system faults. From the experimental results, COP degradation due to the faults in a variable speed system is severer than that in a constant speed system. The method developed in this study can be used in the fault detection of refrigeration systems with a variable speed compressor.

  • The IGBT(Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) is a power semiconductor device that has gained acceptance among circuit design engineers for motor drive and power converter applications. IGBT devices(International Rectifier, Proposed proposed model etc) have the best features of both power MOSFETs and power bipolar transistors, i.e., efficient voltage gate drive requirememts and high current density capability. When designing circuit and systems that utilize IGBTs or other power semiconductor devices, circuit simulations are needed to examine how the devices affect the behavior of the circuit. The interaction of the IGBT with the load circuit can be described using the device model and the state equation of the load circuit. The voltage rise rate at turn-off for inductive loads varies significantly for IGBTs with different base life times, and this rate of rise is important in determing the voltage overshoot for a given series resistor-inductor load circuit. Excessive voltage overshoot is potentially destructive, so a snubber protection circuit may be required. The protection circuit requirements are unique for the IGBT and can be examined using the model. The IGBT model in this paper is verified by comparing the results of the model with experimented results for various circuit operating conditions. The model performs well and describes experimented results accurately for the range of static and dynamic condition in which the device is intended to be operated.

  • A new internally compensated low drop-out voltage regulator based on the cascoded flipped voltage follower is presented in this paper. Adaptive biasing current and fast charging/discharging paths have been added to rapidly charge and discharge the parasitic capacitance of the pass transistor gate, thus improving the transient response. The proposed regulator was designed with standard 65-nm CMOS technology. Measurements show load and line regulations of $433.80{\mu}V/mA$ and 5.61 mV/V, respectively. Furthermore, the output voltage spikes are kept under 76 mV for 0.1 mA to 100 mA load variations and 0.9 V to 1.2 V line variations with rise and fall times of $1{\mu}s$. The total current consumption is $17.88{\mu}V/mA$ (for a 0.9 V supply voltage).

  • In this paper, a new nonlinear dynamic model is derived for a 2-dimensional overhead crane based on a new definition of 2-degree-of-freedom swing angle, and a new anti-swing control law is proposed for the crane. The dynamic model and control law take simultaneous travel and traverse motions of the crane into consideration. The model is first linearized for small motions of the crane load about the vertical stable equilibrium. Then the model becomes decoupled and symmetric with respect to the travel and traverse axes of the crane. From this result, a decoupled anti-swing control law is proposed based on the linearized model via the loop shaping and root locus methods. This decoupled method guarantees not only fast damping of load-swing but also zero steady state position error with optimal transient response for the 2-dimensional motion of the crane. Finally, the proposed control method is evaluated by controlling the simultaneous travel and traverse motions of a 2-dimensional prototype overhead crane. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is then proven by the experimental results.

  • This paper discusses compressors operating number control strategy using cooperative logic to cope with variable partial load for high efficiency of a centrifugal water chiller. The cooperative logic is composed of a speed-up and speed-down controller, enabling smooth operation of compressors and equivalent distribution of thermal load in each compressor. This centrifugal water chiller design can be operated with high efficiency without incurring excessive energy waste and large transient phenomena at partial load states. Simulations in MATLAB and experiments in a real chiller system were conducted and verified the high efficiency control of a centrifugal water chiller achieved by the suggested strategy.
