  • This experimental study is aiming to investigate the hysteritic behavior of high-strength R/C columns subjected to axial load and lateral load reversals. The five 1/4 scaled specimens were made of high-strength concrete with the design strength load(n=0.2f'cAg, n=0.4f'cAg) and type of transverse reinforcement. From the test results, strength and stiffness degradation of columns under higher axial load is much more serious than that under lower axial load. ductility of columns is enhansed with increasing amount of transverse reinforcement, shear strength is depended on the level of axial load.

  • The objective of this experimental investigation is to examine the feasibility and the usefulness of the complementary crosstie in the current ACI 318-89 code for rienforced concrete columns subjected to constant axial load and lateral load reversals. Tests were conducted on1/3 scaled four columns with the length of 1.9m and the cross section of 20$\times$20 cm. The main parameters of specimens were the magnitude of axial load applied and the configuration of transverse reinforcements . From the experimental results, it can be seen that while the column subjected to lower axial load represented considerable ductility behaviors, the column subjected to higher axial load showed the brittle failure

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the structural performance of various shear walls, such as the hysteretic behavior, the maximum horizontal strength, crack propagation, and ductility etc. under load reversals. For the diagonal reinforced slit and infilled shear wall specimens, it was found that the failure mode shows very effective crack control and crashing due to slippage prevention of boundary region and reduction of diagonal tension rather than the brittle shear and diagonal tension failure. The ductility of specimens designed by the diagonal reinforcement for the slit and infilled shear wall was increased 1.72~1.81 times in comparison with the fully rigid shear wall frame. Maximum horizontal load-carrying capacity of specimens designed by the diagonal reinforcement ratio the slit and infilled shear wall was increased respectively by 1.14 times and 1.49 times in comparison with the standard fully rigid shear wall frame.

  • In this study, experimental research was carried out to improve earthquake-resistant performance for the retrofitting of reinforced concrete beam-column joints using carbon fiber materials in existing reinforced concrete building. Six reinforced concrete beam-column joints were constructed and tested to evaluate the retrofitting effect of test variables, such as the retrofitting materials and retrofitting region(plastic hinge, beam-column joint) under load reversals. Test results show that retrofitting specimen(RPC-CP2, RPC-CR, RJC-CP, RJC-CR), using new materials(carbon fiber plate, carbon fiber rod and carbon fiber sheet), designed by the improvement of earthquake-resistant performance and ductility, attained more load-carrying capacity and stable hysteretic behavior.

  • A practical multi-spring model is proposed for a nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete members, especially columns, taking into account the interaction of axial load and bi-directional bending moment. The parameters of the model are determined on the basis of material properties and section geometry. The axial force-moment interaction curve of reinforced concrete sections predicted by the model was shown to agree well with those obtained by the flexural analysis utilizing realistic stress-strain relations of materials. The reliability of the model was also examined with respect to the test of reinforced concrete columns subjected to varying axial load and bi-directional lateral load reversals. The analytical results agreed well with the experiment.

  • This paper presents an analytical prediction of the fatigue damage of reinforced concrete bridge columns subjected to cyclic load. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected, local discontinuity in deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel and concrete. The proposed numerical method for fatigue damage of reinforced concrete bridge columns subjected to cyclic load is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • Prior to the introduction of modern seismic guidelines, it was a common practice to provide straight bar anchorage for beam bottom reinforcement of gravity load designed building. Exterior joints with straight bar anchorages for beam bottom reinforcements are susceptible to sudden anchorage failure under load reversals and hence require systematic seismic upgradation. Hence in the present study, an attempt is made to upgrade exterior beam-column sub-assemblage of a three storied gravity load designed (GLD) building with single steel haunch. Analytical formulations are presented for evaluating the haunch forces in single steel haunch retrofit. Influence of parameters that affect the efficacy and effectiveness of the single haunch retrofit are also discussed. The effectiveness of the single haunch retrofit for enhancing seismic performance of GLD beam-column specimen is evaluated through experimental investigation under reverse cyclic loading. The single steel haunch retrofit had succeeded in preventing the anchorage failure of beam bottom bars of GLD specimen, delaying the joint shear damage and partially directing the damage towards the beam. A remarkable improvement in the load carrying capacity of the upgraded GLD beam-column sub-assemblage is observed. Further, a tremendous improvement in the energy dissipation of about 2.63 times that of GLD specimen is observed in the case of upgraded GLD specimen. The study also underlines the efficacy of single steel haunch retrofit for seismic upgradation of deficient GLD structures.

  • Seismic performance of reinforced concrete(RC) column bent piers to bidirectional seismic loadings was investigated experimentally. RC column bent piers represent one of the most popular forms of piers used in highway bridges. Further to series of previous experimental researches for the performance of single bridge columns subjected to seismic loadings, four column bent piers were constructed in 400 mm diameter and 2,000 mm height. Each pier has two circular supporting columns. These piers were tested under lateral load reversals with axial load of $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Bidirectional lateral loadings were applied. The test parameters included: different transverse reinforcement contents and lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcing steels. Test results indicate that lap-splices of longitudinal reinforcing steels have significantly influence on hysteretic response of column bent piers. Column capacity changed with the level of transverse confinement, and bidirectional repeated loadings induced more strength and stiffness degradation than unidirectional repeated loading.

  • Three reinforced concrete rigid frames and infilled rigid frames with new retrofitting system were tested under both vertical and cyclic loadings, Experimental programs were carried out to evaluate and improve the seismic performance of such test specimens, such as the hysteretic behavior, the maximum horizontal strength, crack propagation, and ductility etc. under load reversals. All the specimens were modeled in one-third scale size. For specimens(RFHPC, RFAR) designed by the improving of seismic performance of the rigid frame using the high ductile fiber composite PC panel and ALC panel system, load-carrying capacities were increased $1.45{\sim}2.28$ times, and hysteretic behavior was very stable during the final tests in comparison with the standard specimen(SRF).
