Long span bridges such as steel cable stayed and suspension bridges are usually more flexible than short to medium span bridges and expected to have large deformations. Deflections due to live load for long span bridges are important since it controls the overall heights of the bridge for securing the clearance under the bridge and serviceability for securing the comfort of passengers or pedestrians. In case of sea-crossing bridges, the clearance of bridges is determined considering the height of the ship master from the surface of the water, the trim of the ship, the psychological free space, the tide height, and live load deflection. In the design of bridges, live load deflection is limited to a certain value to minimize the vibrations. However, there are not much studies that consider the live load deflection and its effects for long span bridges. The purpose of this study is to investigate the suitability of live load deflection limit and its actual effects on serviceability of bridges for steel cable-stayed and suspension bridges. Analytical study is performed to calculate the natural frequencies and deflections by design live load. Results are compared with various design limits and related studies by Barker et al. (2011) and Saadeghvaziri et al. (2012). Two long span bridges are selected for the case study, Yi Sun-Sin grand bridge (suspension bridge, main span length = 1545 m) and Young-Hung grand bridge (cable stayed bridge, main span length = 240 m). Long-term measured deflection data by GNSS system are collected from Yi Sun-Sin grand bridge and compared with the theoretical values. Probability of exceedance against various deflection limits are calculated from probability distribution of 10-min maximum deflection. The results of the study on the limitation of live load deflection are expected to be useful reference for the design, the proper planning and deflection review of the long span bridges around the world.
Power systems must be operated within limits that will ensure adequate generation and transmission capacity to avoid cascading. In developing a set of operations limits, it is important to do so within a general framework in order to ensure that the operating objectives are met. In the this regard, when the system experiences a generation-load imbalance, the principles of sound operation will be maintained by bringing under control an unscheduled power flow condition as quickly as possible. This paper presents load shedding application which responds both to frequency and to rate of change of frequency. Its application is in the operating situation of load suddenly in excess of generation, either because of generator or other equipment failure. A scheme which is able to utilize rate of change of frequency as well as frequency itself is an improvement over existing scheme.
The main purpose of this paper is to establish the high temperature structural integrity evaluating procedures for the next generation reactors, which are to be operated at over 500$^{\circ}C$ and for 60 years. To do this, comparison studies of the high temperature structural design codes and assessment procedures such as the ASME-NH (USA), RCC-MR (France), DDS (Japan), and R5 (UK) are carried out in view of the accumulated inelastic strain and the creep-fatigue damage evaluations. Also the application procedures of the ASME-NH rules with the actual thermal and structural analysis results are described in detail. To overcome the complexity and the engineering costs arising from a real application of the ASME-NH rules by hand, all the procedures established in this study such as the time-dependent primary stress limits, total accumulated creep ratcheting strain limits, and the creep-fatigue damage limits are computerized and implemented into the SIE ASME-NH program. Using this program, the selected high temperature structures subjected to two cycle types are evaluated and the parametric studies for the effects of the time step size, primary load, number of cycles, normal temperature for the creep damage evaluations and the effects of the load history on the creep ratcheting strain calculations are investigated.

The behavior of short span filled spandrel arch bridge of 10 and 21 m span with various axis line, rise and backill height were investigated under the design loads(self weight, earth pressure, temperature load, live load, etc). Even though the behaviors of arch were known as relatively complicated, the followings can be concluded within the limits of this study. The design value of arch bridge increase as the rise decreases, the effects of temperature load become dominant for the design of arch bridge, and governing design factors are occured at springing.
This paper presents a technique to development load control and management system in order to limits a maximum load demand and saves electric energy consumption. The computer programming proper load forecasting algorithm associated with programmable logic control and digital power meter through inform of multidrop network RS 485 over the twisted pair, over all are contained in this system. The digital power meter can measure a load data such as V, I, pf, P, Q, kWh, kVarh, etc., to be collected in statistics data convey to data base system on microcomputer and then analyzed a moving linear regression of load to forecast load demand Eventually, the result by forecasting are used for compost of load management and shedding for demand monitoring, Cycling on/off load control, Timer control, and Direct control. In this case can effectively reduce the electric energy consumption cost for 10% ...
From the first customer located right at the substation to the last customer at the end of the line, voltage must be held within close limits, so the voltage regulation is more important than the thermal limit. On a typical distribution system during the peak load period, the voltage drop may be serious enough to cause unsatisfactory operation of home appliances in the residential area, and present many problems to manufacturing industries, where the voltage must be maintained within close limits to insure smooth operation. Among all the factors contributing to voltage drop in the distribution system, the voltage drop in the distribution transformer may account for 30% of this figure. If we can eliminate this factor, the power companies can provide better quality electricity to more customers with the existing distribution facilities, thus saving on initial investment costs. Taking all these problems into consideration, the author undertook the design of a capacitive transformer which would give zero voltage drop at rated load and at 80% lagging power factor while incorporating overload features to withstand 400% overload for at least 100 seconds. The following are the results obtained through design, manufacture and test of an initial experimental transformer built with these specific purposes.
This paper deals with economic load flow which have objective funtion about generation fuel cost and constraints about power flow equation and generation power limits. A algorithm using penalty method with newton approach is presented. The proposed algorithm is verified through the comparison with lossless ELD on the IEEE 14 system.
The lateral displacement or drift may be the cause of the damage in the reinforced concrete (RC) columns under the seismic load. In many regulations, lateral displacement was limited according to the properties of columns. The design displacement limits may be represented indirectly through the material strain limits and the mechanical properties of columns. EUROCODE-8 and FEMA356 calculate displacement limits by taking into account the mechanical properties of columns. However, Turkey Building Earthquake Code (TBEC) determine displacement limits by taking into account the material strain limits. The aim of this study is to assess the seismic design codes for RC columns through an experimental study. The estimates of seismic design codes have been compared with the experimental results. It is observed that the lateral displacement capacities of columns estimated according to some seismic codes are not in agreement with the experimental results. Also, it is observed that TBEC is conservative in the context of the performance indicator of RC columns, compared to EUROCODE-8 and FEMA356. Moreover, in this study, plastic hinge length and effective stiffness of test elements were investigated.
LRV(Light Rail Vehicle) is one of the most useful way for urban transit. HDPIC has designed and manufactured the LRV train set for Manila Line 1 expansion. The LRV is composed of two carbody sections which are coupled by a articulated bogie. The articulated bogie and two motorized bogies have slewing rings in order to improve the curving performance and ride quality. Carbody structures are mainly made of low-carbon stainless steel (STS301L), and the carbody bolsters and draft sills are made of rolled steel for welded structures. The authority's specifications specified the design load conditions and weight limits. Design load conditions are vertical load, compressive load and diagonal jacking, and the maximum axle load is 10.7 ton. In order to meet those requirements, the stiffness and strength of carbody structure were predicted using finite element analysis during design stage. The half or full structure is modeled and analyzed with design load conditions, and critical areas are analysed in detail using sub-modeling method. The strength and strength of carbody structure was also verified by the load test. The analysis and test results show a good agreement.
This paper proposes a Modified Particle Swarm Optimization with Time Varying Acceleration Coefficients (MPSO-TVAC) for solving economic load dispatch (ELD) problem. Due to prohibited operating zones (POZ) and ramp rate limits of the practical generators, the ELD problems become nonlinear and nonconvex optimization problem. Furthermore, the ELD problem may be more complicated if transmission losses are considered. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is one of the famous heuristic methods for solving nonconvex problems. However, this method may suffer to trap at local minima especially for multimodal problem. To improve the solution quality and robustness of PSO algorithm, a new best neighbour particle called 'rbest' is proposed. The rbest provides extra information for each particle that is randomly selected from other best particles in order to diversify the movement of particle and avoid premature convergence. The effectiveness of MPSO-TVAC algorithm is tested on different power systems with POZ, ramp-rate limits and transmission loss constraints. To validate the performances of the proposed algorithm, comparative studies have been carried out in terms of convergence characteristic, solution quality, computation time and robustness. Simulation results found that the proposed MPSO-TVAC algorithm has good solution quality and more robust than other methods reported in previous work.
